Steel Battalion: Line Of Contact

Can I just ask how many of you have played either of the Steel Battalion games much in single player? From what you are saying it sounds like you are wading into online at the deep end, when really you need to spend quite a bit of time on single player first. I haven't got LOC yet, I will do though, but know this, I've played the orginal game for about 25-30 hours and am only now feeling like I can really control the mechs properly. Maybe I'm just shit but you do need to invest plenty of time before you can start cooking with gas.

Anyone up for a game from about 9? I can host about 4 with no problems, so anyone up for some mech action?

You do mean 9pm, right?

I'll give it another go. DavidB and myself didn't have a clue what we were doing last night :P We couldn't hear each other in the first game.

Also, how do you return to the lobby when the game is over? We couldn't figure it out so had to quit and setup another game.

EDIT: Oops, can't make it tonight sorry

There is NO single player in LOC, both campaign and free are live and sys-link ONLY

I'd pwn you if I could get into the game marklar!

You're probably right, and I'm not afraid to admit it... :( It has taken me a few days to get find my [VT] legs. Unless we're talking about free mode here, in which case you *will* die under the crushing blow of a Sheepdog :D

I have 30ish kills to 10 deaths in free mode :P Campaign should pick up a bit too, now I have some regular people to play against (plus a 2nd generation supply).

Regarding the original game -- I've played all the way through it, unlocked everything (except the M2; not sure if it is available to use in the first game) but LoC is subtle different in game play to the first, with far tigher physics and control, new weapons and some other tweaks. Combat practice does help mind but the way the online play works has a very different feel, imho.

Yeah, you have to quit. ..I think.

I'll try and get a game tonight if anyone wants to join me, but if not i'm planning to buy Splinter Cell tonight so I play that online instead if I can't find a game

finding this whole live this a mixture of brilliant and frustrating. the problems i've had getting into (and staying in) games. i managed to pop in to virtuapimp's game a couple of times, for a few seconds, before getting booted (i presume by the game).

finally managed to get a free game with some other newbies. spent 18 minutes wandering round looking for the opposition, 30 seconds in a firefight and the rest starting again after getting crushed in a two-on-one sandwich.

managed to join a few more games on campaign, but seemed to spend as much time playing as joining. that and it appears that the right brothers have a scarity of decent players and a scarcity of decent vts (but at least the colts are cheap).

i'm going to stick with it though, as it shows a lot of promise. and it's still as immersive as ever. hopefully i managed to get a game with you lot sometime too ...

yeah it was the.... game.... ahem... ;)

:(

It was really annoying you joined, then you got kicked when DavidB joined, then DavidB got kicked when someone else joined.

add me to the list. gamertag's the same as my forum name. won't be online for a month or so, though, most likely (moving to london on wednesday => no 'net connection until BT sort their shit out, which could take fucking forever => on holiday the last two weeks of april).

I'm only going to play this come middle of June, A/S exams and all that. Am I going to get my arse handed to me with my crap VT or is there some kind of PSO system where a kind experianced player can give me some hand-me-down generation 2 VTs? I don't want to get online only to find everyone riding around on some super cool rare VT that you can only get 1 Wednesday in a month between 2am and 3am.

I had an EXCELLENT 2v2 game last night. Made the price worth it for me.

Campaign mode, had to get to the middle of the map to pick up a box thing and take it to the enemy base.

It was just a pure, pure rush trying to get that thing outta there. Almost made it, too, despite being ambushed. Rushed past the guy shooting at me and smacked into a wall :)

Ah well, it was still brilliant.

Oh my god, I just signed into my first game, I had no clue what I was doing in the campaign but I managed to get into a battle. In the game the lag was terrible, my teammates rushed off somewhere and I couldn't find them so spent 10 mins running around until eventually someone got me with some plasma weapon. Oh joyous joys...

Is there any easier way to learn what the hells going on in the online mode?

Yep,

arrange a mech touching session with one of us, that unlocks some over powered mechs for free mission, then run a couple of games with us.

There are some bloody good players out there but on the whole most people cant hit the side of a barn

At the moment I'm having stress adapting to long range waepons, my Jarallacs N keeps getting its ass whopped my because the weapon bias is long range and my playing style hasnt caught up

ho hum

Don't worry, the lag thing only happens now and again.

stayed up 'til late last night to be around at the end of turn. got rewarded by being able to purchase my first two sheepdogs (which i'll probably be afraid to ever use) and 19 (!) colt execs.

it has taken me four days, but i'm finally starting to get the hang of things. until yesterday i was at 1 kill for 33 deaths, yesterday i managed 6 kills for 20 deaths, all against reasonable opposition and that's an order of magnitude better. so not suprisingly i was very happy at that. pity two of them didn't register due to a maintenance error.

and i must put Meh and Halonic on my friends list since i'm a rb.

So, you're past the "OMFG this is just unfair how the FUCK am I playing this bad" stage. I almost gave up on the game when my kills - deaths ratio just seemed messed up. Then I "got" it :(

Thank you, Lock-on cam.

BTW, what time does the turn end at? And do we poor RB bastards have any new pieces of kit yet?

As of last night I was 24th overall and 9th in Jarawotnots for mission success rate (83.30%)

There, that was my moment of glory, now we are on a new turn I expect that to drop back in line with my other placings (about 1500th) as I cant play the sneaky tactic on mission 13 any more (start in D3 and attack the planes avoiding the mechs that always attack towards B3)

heh, i almost always hung back on D1 incase someone tried that manouvre. i'm sure you'll be able to find some similar tactic for the new boards.

as for the turn ending, it was 01:00 (london time). about 400 sheepdogs and 2500 colt execs were supplied at that time. about 250 sheepdogs disappeared in the first few minutes before people obviously ran out of money. i ended up buying 19 colt execs cos i figured they offered better value for money than another sheepdog ...

I finally got my copy from Play so I'm up for some games possibly tonight. I'm playing SC tonight from around 21.00 but will look out for you guys afterwards. If you don't mind I will add your gamertags to my list so I can find you guys.

I hear that the jar-a-wots got another gen2 mech last night as well, the Jar NS, but once again its limited so some mech touching may be in order rather then forking out on one. Especially as I need more Jar C's and more vitzhs' at the mo

I shall be playing again tonigh, from 10 ish. I expect to get PWN£D in campaign (nowt usual there, although I usually kill loads while no fucker else does anything) and KICK ARSE in free mode (again, typical), using a sheepdog.

Still can't believe I have a replay where I get into a fight with 3 2nd gen. VTs and walk away ;) I'll trade for a Jar-NS :(
