Top Spin - Rllmuk Season

Let's say 8.00. Is half an hour enough time to complete a game? How long are they?

I seem to remember that I had trouble joining the tournament at the weekend. What details do I need? I printed the XSN page off so hopefully I'll be able to sort it tonight.

Matches can take anything from 5 to 30 mins, depending on how close they are. My matches don't tend to last long because I don't really do rallies - I'm a bit of a reckless "wham, bang, thankyou m'am" type. ;)

You need the tournament name (RLLMUK SEASON), the tournament password (2912133), and the round setting (DZALI). XSN isn't very user friendly, but you'll work it out in the end. Just set up your match & then invite your opponent (assuming you're hosting). Oh, and if you're hosting remember to add the other guy to your friends list first.

Thanks for that. I think it was the round setting that was confusing me.

Daley, you up for 3 matches in one night? Harsh on the fitness I know

Add me. If my thumb can take it i'll play/lose to all of ya. ;)

Just booted up Top Spin now and had to install an update. Looks like it includes a lag indicator when searching for games and has fixed the stats board (along with a stats reset). Rumour has it that it also fixes the zero power serve exploit and that annoying drop-shot-hitting-the-top-of-the-net-everytime exploit.

'bout time an' all ;)

It's a fantastic update. You can see how good people are before you play them, and yes, it looks like there's a lag indicator too.

On the negative side, I just played 4 matches, all of which were a touch laggy. In the past I've only ever experienced lag very rarely, so I hope this isn't a side effect.

I am on Top Spin now and is available for next 45 mins ;) then Bad Girls on TV.

If I am in I am available for top Spin between 8 to 9 most night.

Still online myself if you fancy a game (sorry for not accepting the other invite, I was in the middle of an XSN game with Daley). Fancy the second XSN game or just a friendly?

Daley - can't see you online just yet. I'm wondering if we got our wires crossed over whether we're playing last night or tonight. I'll pop back online in a bit & see if you're on then.

I was there between 8 and 9. Arnie was handing me my ass on a plate (i.e. beating me very badly indeed.) I'll keep an eye out for you tonight between 8 and 9 or maybe earlier in the day if you can?

Ah, I started playing Far Cry 'for a few minutes' at 8, and didn't stop till nearly 10. :o

I can't make tonight, but may be online on Friday night for a bit.

Arnie, have you seen the xsn home page??

It has for some reason awarded me the win for last nights game and marked you down as 'inc' for the game.

Many apologies as you obviously won fair and square, hope it doesn't effect your progress in the comp.

2nd time that has happened to me, Legendary 10 and I finished a match a few nights back and rather than putting the scores down as normal, it showed 'win' for me and 'inc' for legend (although i had actually won that match).

Perhaps some kind of glitch on the xsn page? I notice the same has happened in the match between Mr J v UK Miner Willy, lets hope it does not continue...... ;)

Yeah, I think XSN was a bit fucked last night as when I was trying to log in the page was completely screwed (XSN logo stretched all over the place, not showing any details on the page).

Cheers for the post, no need to apologise it's not your fault. It is a bit disappointing that it didn't register the details properly, but hopefully I can still win enough games to get through.

Haven't they postponed all but one of the xsn titles due out in 2004 until next year?

Yeah, they've shelved all sports titles for 2004. Microsoft say that this is because they felt that their games were not up to scratch compared to things like the ESPN series, but a lot of people reckon that this is a political move to try and coax EA to develop for Live.

Not a big fan of EA games myself, but you can see how Microsoft could benefit financially from having EA titles on Live.

I've only managed to play 3 games :D

I'm in sunny Brussels from tonight until Friday  I'll try and arrange the rest of the games when I get back next weekend. I'll forfeit any that can't be arranged.

donnie_darko, just checked the XSN website and it's done that WIN/INC thing again and credited me with the win instead of you, which is totally unfair as you completely pasted me in our game.

Sorry the XSN site screwed up again, it's getting a bit ridiculous now as you play a game and you have no idea whether it's going to register the result properly.

I should be up and running with TopSpin in a week or two (broadband soon, oh yes!).

Anything I need to practice? Or am I doomed to lose every match I play? :)

My advice would be to build up your character to it's maximum before you go on Live (only takes about 2-3 hours if you keep switching sponsors to get cash to pay for training). Top Spin can be a very frustrating game when you start out on Live(I lost my first 15 or so games), but it is well worth persevering with as you can have some excellent matches once you get the hang of it.

My other tips are:

1. The best Live players are very good at the net - if you try and play baseline tennis all the time you'll probably lose more often than not.

2. Mix up your serves (something I don't do very well) - a "normal" serve can be more effective than a "risk" serve most of the time.

3. The timing of risk/drop shots is slightly different on Live, I find it easier to use the "once click" method rather than waiting for the gauge to move up and down.

4. Mix up everything (again something I don't do very well). I thought the AI in the single player was fairly good, but you soon learn that most people are going to be able to read what shot you're going to play next if you don't keep varying your shots.

5. Add people from this thread to your friends list, we're all nice people and I think everyone would be happy to show you the ropes.

6. Persevere with it. Top Spin is at it's best when you're having a close game with someone and every point counts.
