The body was missing but that doesn't mean Smokey had possessed it. He might have just hidden it, so that the game wouldn't be given away when there were two Christians around (one dead, one living). Or it might have just come out of the coffin and rolled down a hill into a ditch or something.

That would be brilliant if that was how they wrapped up one of the mysteries.

Jack: "But I saw my father up and walking around, and his body was gone from its coffin!"

Flocke: "Look again Jack"

<camera pans over from the empty coffin to a DITCH where Christian Shepherd's decaying body lies face down in the mud>

Jack: "Oh"

I can't see how smokey can be anything to do with Christian ... we saw Christian inside Jacob's cabin, which was protected by the weird circle of ash, or whatever it was.

Yeah but in the season 5 finale Bram and Ilana found a gap in the ash, announced that someone else has been using the cabin, and promptly burned it the fuck down. So, in fact it's strongly implied that Christian is Smokey on the island.

Doh. Too much stuff to remember!

Which is quite a strong reaction, considering the evidence. A line of ash, on the floor of a jungle which has frequent rain storms and plenty of wild animals, has a gap in. How long was the ash supposed to have been there? A bit stupid really.

Why did smokey come and help out when Ben summoned him, then, to help deal with the freighter mercs when they attacked the village?

My theory on the allegiences/ "coming war" has Widmore, Matthew Abaddon, and possibly Mrs Hawkings, on the side of the nemesis, and Ben/Richard/The Others, in general, on the side of Jacob. But this doesn't match up with smokey wiping out the merc team (which we know was sent by Widmore, right?)

Perhaps Smokey knew that he'd soon be commanding Ben to follow Lock's instructions, as per his long term plan to kill Jacob, so turned up and twatted those mercs to reiterate to Ben how powerful it was.

Hmm, its certainly a possibility.

Just remembered another similar scene - when Ben tried to summon the monster another time (?I can't rememebr exactly when?) and it seemed to fail - except then Locke turned up - obviously we know now that Ben's action didn't fail, as it summoned smokey-locke, but does this suggest that Smokey HAS to obey the summons, somehow, rather than it being more of a request for help, as we thought before?

Another thing - "Nice to see you without your chains" - lots of people are taking this to mean Richard was a slave who arrived on the Black Rock (still a likely theory, I think) but it's a bit strange - seeing as Richard is white, and the slave trade was overwhelmingly in black people. I mean, the writers could have written it any way they wanted, when they introduced the character of Richard, so if he was supposed to be a former slave, I'd have thought it would have been logical to have him played by a black actor? Just makes me think that the "chains" line could have been a red herring of some sort.

Richard could have been an indentured slave.

yeah, but why not head off all the "but Richard can't be a slave because he's white! stupid writers!" that they are bound to end up with, by casting a black actor and making the character an African? It's not like it would change any essential part of the storyline (that we know about so far).

I think Smoky has been planning to use Ben and Locke for this for years. Every single thing he has done has been to make that happen.

Was chatting with another Lost fan at work and he suggested that the 'alternate' timeline will eventually reflect what happened to each character on the island, tying into the theme of fate that's run through the show.

I'm sure the theory could be trashed but it could be quite interesting to see. For instance, Claire and Kate are together; maybe something happens to Claire that induces the birth of Aaron and leaves him with Kate? Locke goes to see Jack and is able to walk again?

So I guess I just found out that live streams are perfectly viable these days, if you're unemployed. Just watched it in a good resolution with no lag.

Immediate thoughts:

Understandably a slower pace this week, but at least we have the Kate episode out of the way.

I wasn't too sure about John and Yoko in the premier, but I'm definitely warming to them as characters.

"Infection". It's so freaking weird that they're addressing the fundamentals of the mythology. I feel like a shelter puppy who has found a good home.

Give Josh Holloway an Emmy.

The Jack I used to like is re-emerging, it seems..

Also, hey! Mac from It's Always Sunny is back. Hi Mac! Bye Mac!

Yeah I'm reeeeeally confused about Ethan, especially because during that time he would/should of been on the island tracking down the Losties. Also is it now revealed that the Claire in the cabin with Christian was claimed? If so can light/dark 'claim' multiple bodies at same time?

No need to be confused there:

The island is submerged in the alternate timeline. Ethan never went there, probably - I'm betting he's just a nice normal doctor, one of those Lost coincidences but without a big dark meaning behind it.

The stuff with

Claire being Rousseau/claimed by Smokey(?)

is just what the hell though.

Remember though Ethan was born on the island. He was Horace's son, Juliet helped with the birth. When the bomb went off, he should have been still on the island. So it's quite an important issue to think about.

EDIT: I just remembered that the island was mostly evacuated when the bomb went off. So I'm guessing, in this reality, he was still born on the island.

Just skimmed through the episode again.

At the end, when they're pointing a gun at Jin's head...

Others answerman: No, Aldo, we can't! He's one of them!

Aldo: He may be one of them!

There was an obvious emphasis on the word 'may', which could suggest they're not simply referring to oceanic survivors when they say 'them'.

Jacob wanted 'them' alive. And Yoko at the temple talked about people being brought to the Island.

I hope it's part of some prophetic greater destiny stuff.

Claire being Rousseau

also went through my head but then my head started to hurt so I stopped thinking about it. Though I do recall some kind of connection with those two characters...

Think it was when Rousseau kidnapped Claire and Aaron is what your after, Since Rousseau lost Alex to the others.

Didn't know whether to spoiler it or not.

Curse Sawyer for being a tit and running away, just when they finally get to the place where they might get some answers! It kind of makes sense, because Sawyer has never really cared about answers, he usually seems like he'd be happiest if he was just left alone in a hut somewhere.

And curse Japanese Temple Guy for being the most irritating lost baddie yet - at least Ben/Jacob/smokeylocke have the decency to say something slightly cryptic, which you always know probably contains a little bit of truth, when one of the losties asks him a question. This guy just keeps silent or says something in Japanese, without subtitles! What a cunt.

All the Claire stuff is weird. So she was never actually destined to give her baby away, anyway? Really interesting finding out odd little facts like that, at this point in the series. When was the last confirmed sighting of her alive? I can't even remember.
