Unknown diamonds in the retro list

So I've been playing on the Model 3 emulator and have been blown away by two games I'd never heard of before.

Harley Davidson LA Riders is a very simple racer where you ride your motorbike until the timer runs out.  But there's something really enjoyable about it. The blue skies and thumping music turn a really simple game into something really fun.

But the stand out is Sega Emergency Ambulance, which is completely insane.  instead of a timer you get the health meter of the patient.  Every time you crash the ambulance the game declares "Internal Bleeding!" or "Ventrical Defibrulation!" and the whole thing seems in apalling taste and very, very funny.

So what are the hidden gems in the massive list of roms you bought from a legal source such as, erm, Netflix or something?

Funnily enough I've been messing about with the model three emulator. I thought I should try spike out, but as far as I can tell it's dreadful, maybe I'm doing it wrong.

I wouldn't have thought to try the Harley Davidson game as I suspected it would just be branded awfulness, I'll check it out and that ambulance one too. I'm waiting on a sinden light gun to arrive so I can play model 3  Jurassic park (and a load of other games for other systems).

I've been watching a few you tube videos trying to find arcade racers. So far "side by side" on ps1 looks good. I believe it became "battle gear" on PS2 and arcade. And are somehow related to initial D. I haven't tried any of these games though...

Anyway not exactly an answer to your question :)

I remember something like "Emergency Call Ambulance" being mentioned in the retro folder ages ago - is that the same thing? - but I didn't have the knowhow to get it working. I've been meaning to try it though.

My go-to "hidden gem" at the moment is still B. Rap Boys by Kaneko. :D To be honest it's a fairly rudimentary scrolling brawler and not really that amazing, but the autoscrolling BMX/skate interludes and the vocal hip-hop sprinkled into the soundtrack give it a pretty fun vibe. I found myself trying to make further progress just to hear the next stage music (although a few tracks were re-used. :hmm: )

Fibrillation, surely?

Unless you are somehow curing the patient of their heart condition by crashing.

Limited Edition Hang On was the last new-to-me game that I really enjoyed (still enjoy), courtesy of the public MiSTerFPGA release that appeared a few weeks ago.

For the uninitiated, it's a revision of Super Hang On - probably my all time favourite racing game - which originally appeared a few years afterwards in 1991, for some reason.

The main draw is that it's basically an Easy Mode with smoother faster (less brutal) tracks and a rebalancing that enhances an already incredible experience.

I might adore SHO but there's no way I'm seeing the finish line on the American and European courses without a near perfect run.. which does kinda take the shine off a touch. Limited Edition Hang On is the humanistic final revision I was always after and it's a real thing.

You should look up Video Game Esoterica on YouTube. He’s been doing a retrospective on sega arcade racers and has covered that Ambulance game plus some others.

That and jumbo safari was getting worked on as a 2 in 1 game for the Dreamcast, was well looking forward to it, then SEGA canned the thing and cancelled all development. Thought it would have ended up on Xbox but alas Sega make confusing and shit decisions.
