Old movies you remember. Lets make a list!

My best friends mum had an insane VHS collection. I remember watching all sorts of movies as a kid in the 80's.

Heres an idea: lets create a library of good old movies? The RLLMUK movie library of old movies.

I'll start:

The great Leslie:

Shout at the devil

Paint your wagon

Hannie Caulder

The Guns of Navarone

The Battle of Britain

Mary Poppins

Post your youth/childhood movie here.

I learned about this film's existence from clips of it in an episode of the South Bank Show all about the London Underground's cultural significance, which for some reason me and my brother got obsessed with when we were 8 or 9 after our dad recorded it for us and used to rewatch constantly on VHS. The shots of people and objects getting sucked into a tube station were fascinatingly unsettling. The whole film is, actually - it's great stuff.

Also, a guilty pleasure: The Wild Geese (the full thing seems to be up on Youtube): (Edit probably best to just watch a couple of minutes of this video if you don't want spoilers)

Another, sorry for the barrage. The Hot Rock. I seem to recall this being a really fun crime caper, nicely twisty. Also Robert Redford, so what's not to love?  This may well be the worst trailer I've ever seen. Again the full thing appears to be on Youtube, so I may well give it a rewatch. I've not seen it in so long.

How old is old? This is from 1985. It's so much fun:

Dodger Lane (Peter Sellers) has planned the perfect robbery while in prison. He intends to break out of prison, steal a fortune in diamonds, and break back into prison before anyone notices. With only a few days' sentence left, and the perfect alibi, what could possibly go wrong?

Smokey and the Bandit has a special place in my heart as it was the first and only film my Dad took me to see and I always thought he looked like Burt Reynolds.  I thought it was the best film you’d see anywhere when I was a kid. The theme tune just makes me smiles immediately.
I’ve always loved Reynolds since then, unlike my old man who is a complete waste of space.

I watch this almost every time it is on. It's getting silly. But it's so very good. Clint and Richard Burton in a WW2 action film. I know it by heart, but it's such a cracker.

"Broadsword calling Danny Boy."

This is so VHS, so Blockbuster. I love BeastMaster. More films should feature ferrets. And Rip Torn (such a great name).

Still the best version of the story. Better than the book, better than the John Carpenter remake and better than the recent TV version:

This is a TV pilot really, but it did get a threatrical release. I'll always love it (I got to meet Gil Gerard a few years ago):

Got a couple.

Somewhere in Time

It had a haunting effect on me and the film still has its own fan club.

House of Games

This is up there with The Sting for plot development and expressing the fine art of the double cross.

I haven't seen House Of Games in a long while, but I remember it was featured on (Edit) Moviedrome back in the day, and thinking it was brilliant. I should have posted The Sting though. It is my favourite movie ever. It's got such a great cast, such a good score, it looks amazing, and the plot is so good it got plundered for about six episodes of Hustle.

Flash Gordon (1980)

Loved this movie as a kid.

Dirty Harry (1971)

Thought this was the coolest thing ever as an impressionable 13 yo

The Quiet Man (1952)

My Spanish grandfather had a great collection of classic VHS movies. Used to spend nearly the whole of our summer holidays in Spain at their house and seeing as we had very little choice on Spanish TV we got a good education in movies. This was a favourite. Need to rewatch it one day.

My Grandma used to to run a rental store. My god, it was goldmine for nightmares as a child.

Legend

IT

Krull

Ghost Squad

Predator (The cover was just lovely)

Once Upon a Time in the West (Claudia Cardinale, confirmed heterosexuality)

Killer Klowns from Outer Space

Critters

Innerspace (Watched it with my daughter, it had dodgy dildo reference)

and all of the other 80's shit. It was so good.

Sad, but I miss the smell of a VHS and the plastic.

I also watched Ghostwatch live and it ruined me for several years. I didn't even get to the Michael Parkinson possession. What the fuck were they thinking?
