Tekken 8. Trailers currently being pumped out en masse.

Quite a few new trailers for this being released, so figured it was time for its own thread. Kazuya and Jin are super boring so I've made an executive decision to ignore them for now.

Not much to talk about really until nearer release. Hoping they branch out into more niche characters soon (maybe not Gon or Bosconovich though), but the approach to crazier fights with nunchucks and guns being whipped out mid-round is an interesting pivot, like Leroy's staff in Tekken 7.

I've never really got seriously 'into' a Tekken game before, though I did put some decent time into Ling Xiaoyu in 7 which was interesting as I hated every previous incarnation of her before then.

Some neat character effects on display too, like Law's veins or Paul's permanently destroyed sleeve. Wonder if it might be a bit too crazy and stylized for some though.

I liked Xiaoyu in... 6 on PSP I think? Which was interesting as I traditionally hate stance characters in every fighting game.

It's never going to happen but I would love them to bring back the thing where you can save your play data as a ghost that other players can download and fight. It's like pretending you're playing online but you don't feel as incompetent. :P

Thought we'd moved beyond fighting game character design where a female character wears a dress and flashes her underwear every other move (as well as has her boobs on show).

Guess not.

It'll be hard to beat how well Tekken 7 did in terms of enjoying watching competitive play and actually playing it, but I'm cautiously optimistic, especially with the online components being outsourced to Arika.

Hopefully an alpha playtest will show up in Akihabara while I'm in the country a month after Evo Japan, especially as there's a new Namco arcade, but I doubt it.

Isn't it every three games they pop one out? TTT after 3, TTT2 after 6, so...

Eh, not exactly a science for working it out, but hey.

I hadn't spotted that pattern and thought it had also been longer since 2 was released than it was between TTT and TTT2, but that was a 12 year gap

While it's a weird thing to have your expectations influenced by I always expected Jun to come back because... uh, she had a neat Kotobukiya Bishoujo figure made.

My method of intuition is weird, but it apparently works.

Oh shit, Xiaoyu trailer. Hated her until 7, where she became my most played after I couldn't get to grips with the Lili changes.

(Disclaimer: I'm an absolute amateur with a few combos at hand)

Edit: Hmm. Still most impressed with Law's trailer so far, might migrate to him.

This looks pretty good. I adored Tekken 1 to 4 but starting tuning out by number 5 and haven't played one since that, so maybe I'll come back to it with this. Glad the series is still as batshit zany as it always was, though I can't believe Paul's hair is floppy now I was hoping it would keep gaining a couple inches with every instalment but I guess that's not sustainable. Hoping for a Gon trailer soon!!

I used to play tekken obsessively (1-3 in particular). Lost interest from 4 onwards. Maybe it’s just me but I find the design and look of the characters here and interactions completely uninspiring. Very shiny and dazzling but so uninspiring like a hyper polished mobile game.

Maybe I’m just too old/out of touch but it seems so soulless.

Tekken and Soulcalibur suffer from hideous chunky overdesigned characters imo. I really hate the art direction of modern Namco fighters, I liked them well enough in the 90s, especially Tekken 3 and Soul Calibur 1 which were the best they ever put out, Soul Calibur especially still a beautiful game and very easy on the eyes.

Yeah, the series' audiovisual language has been stuck in a rut for ages. It's barely budged an inch since Tekken 5, and the games have only become more aggressively ugly with each iteration. The worst thing is that they contain so many character design choices that negatively affect the gameplay, too - e.g. everyone wears thick coats and/or lots of rippling fabrics, such that their movements become far less readable and end up just looking like whirling vortices of ribbons. The potentially thrilling return of Jun Kazama is rendered a damp squib by this, for me - if you've played Tekken 2 recently, you can't help but be struck by how much clearer her movements were and how her unobtrusive get-up worked with them...

Flappy clothes don't bother me much, but I really dislike the garish hitsparks in this version, plastered over effects that altogether looks like a PSA on never returning to fireworks. And I think those dramatic pauses make movesets feel increasingly generic, when stylistic differentiation used to be a huge part of Tekken's appeal to me.

That and its classic movement (16 years ago!):

Moveset variety with clear styles:
