Best Thrust / Oids clone?

Recommended Posts

Sub-Terrania on the MD is brilliant if emulation is an option. But then you may as well emulate Thrust as I’m not sure it’s ever been bettered tbh.

I'll second the recommendation for Sub Terrainia, it's an amazing game.

Another excellent one is Solar Jetman. It was a NES exclusive but is included on the Rare Replay collection.

For a completely different take on this there’s a game with a larger circular ship where you thrust about in a similar fashion but have a micromanaged internal bit which involves moving a character to different parts of the ship to control things like the shield and switch guns. I can’t remember the name but I played it on the ps4 on ps plus. Tried to find it but someone’s gonna have to jump in and mention it. It’s pretty decent as I went through it all myself.

While looking I did randomly find this but don’t know anything about it.

I've been playing a bit of Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate on my Deck recently and it's a really good game still, I think it fails the 'thrust' type test as the gravity is removed and the point isn't to be fighting/mastering the flight controls, makes it a different game really which removes my main frustration with many of the more pure lander type games with shooting - namely the shooting is too hard when you have to point the surface to do it. A quick go on Gravity Crash reminded me of that yesterday.

I loved Thrust, and played a Public Domain version on Amiga called "Fleuch" for bloody ages way back when. That was basically Thrust in all but name.

Air Taxi and UGH! (Amiga), or Space Taxi (C64) always felt like related games to me. Single screen, but the mechanics were very similar.

All this to say that I'm watching this thread very closely lol

Yep, that’s the one. I knew Love was in the title somewhere but couldn’t remember it for the life of me.

Here’s a longplay of it without commentary.

Just popped in to say that I just bought this on steam and its everything you guys are looking for in terms of a thrust clone. First impressions are that it seems like a better game than Pixeljunk Shooter to me, but mileage may vary.

Gravity Force 2 for the Amiga, if you can find it.

There was a semi-sequel called Gravity Power on an Amiga Power coverdisk but I couldn't tell you the differences. From memory they were largely the same.

Anyway it's magnificent in local two-player.

Gravity Force 2 and Gravity Power were great multiplayer games. I saw a game on the switch store  last weekend which reminded me of this called Gravity Thrust (while I was tying to add funds for the eshop closure on wii u and 3ds). I found no reviews yet but will probably check it out this weekend.

Wikipedia says the devs released the source code a few years ago on a Creative Commons licence. The article notes, somewhat non-specifically, "Many similarly titled clones have since appeared."

By eye from the screenshots, I suspect that's what you've found there.

By 'eck Gravity Ace is hard! Or I'm old. One of the two :D

Isn't the original thrust nails? Also, I'd recommend the modern controls, so you can aim independently and don't have to rotate to move in a certain direction.

Gravity Crash PS3/PSP/Vita is great.
Gravitar is on Atari 50.

The original Lunar Lander is on Atari 50 and is surprisingly playable. Still as hard as nails - as I recall from playing it back in the day.

For me the best Thrust clone was always Thrust Xtreme by Weibo de Witt. It disappeared for a long time but it appears to be up on itch.io now. I do remember it refused to work on anything post-Vista, unfortunately.

Gravitron 2 is on Steam, and it's excellent.
