Retro Gamer 243

It’s here…..

Well for me anyway. I seem to be blessed with timely delivery of my retro gamer subscription (subscribe you heathens!).

It’s an 80s themed edition with some lovely features.

Plus I’ve already spotted a typo/in-joke: Burning Rangers != Blazing Rangers. It got me all excited there was some rerelease of Burning Rangers tha had passed me by. One day.

Anyway, subscribe you fools.

Just got home, and latest issue was on my doormat.

In the past 12 months I've had soggy, torn, dried with several pages stuck together, folded in half, and now this latest issue was delivered with the front cover on the outside of the envelope. Not sure how that happened. I complained to Royal Mail, but they blame Whistl. Whistl blame Royal Mail. The publisher doesn't even reply, so it must be nobody's fault. It doesn't help that it comes in a paper envelope, though.

I've been a loyal subscriber for years and love my collection, but it's becoming harder to justify carrying on when this is becoming the norm.

@strider I know this is completely nothing to do with you, but do you know of similar issues?

That looks like a packing issue. I see them turn up wet but never like that. We complain about the paper every month but it falls on death ears. It’s frustrating seeing regulars treated like this. Send me an email at the usual address and I’ll do my best to send it to the relevant people 👍

Thanks @strider Usual address?

I have to say it's weird to have it arrive with the cover outside the envelope. As for regulars...the bigger the company, the less they seem to care, especially if a public company.

I work for a local family business in Yorkshire famous for it's tea 😄 and they care about even the smallest issues. My wife runs a local indie card shop, and she cares about folks who come and spend 28p on a card as much as someone who spends a lot more. It's not just about the money, it's about being happy to make someone happy.

I think I'm going to go digital only. The extra few days and often sexier cover aren't worth the soggy mess that turns up and ends up in the bin.

I had the same feeling and I was already considering getting a Readly subscription so it worked out well.

I’m one of the reader comments about importing Rhythm Tengoku! I’ve hit the big time!

Ha! I was reading an old issue yesterday and there was a pull quote attributed to one "SeanR" which made me slightly uneasy - like my virtual and physical worlds had intersected.

I just think that so much is going digital, it would be a shame to not have physical copies of RG. It feels to me how that sort of magazine has to be read. Like yer Crash and Zzap!s of yore.

So I just buy it from Tesco or WHSmith; there's never a problem getting one from the newsstand.

How do you get into the reader comments? Is it via the Musk vanity project?

Yeah, that and Facebook. We typically specify if replies will be printed in the mag, so you'll know which questions to comment on.

  • 2 weeks later...

100 pages? I could understand it being the case during COVID, but this drop in page count, and a cover feature that's once again a "best of/defining games of" make it a bit of a hard pill to swallow.

I hear the page count is reduced with other Future mags, too :( (SFX already started to look like a magazine for ants).
