N64 games used to be 70 quid... that's like 120 quid now!!

Reality is, everything is getting more expensive - people need to eat, businesses need to show year on year growth.  I'll complain at a game being 70 quid - but of all the games being priced at 70 quid, TOTK is the one I'll complain least about.  And I'm likely going to have to buy two copies!!!

I complain about Dead Space because it's a remake of an older game and 45 quid is my brain ceiling for that.

Nobody thinks it's OK - but reasonable people think it's an issue across all platforms. Pulling the 'it's a Switch game' and '6yr old hardware' stuff just makes you look like a bellend. Especially pulling it on TOTK which is likely to be, and you can quote me on this, half decent.

Ridiculous. Basically you agree that all games should be priced at £70 or not. There is not going to a sliding scale based on perceived quality. It just sets the new norm.

Bellend? Sod off with the personal insults. If Sony or MS put their PS4/XBOne games up to £70 there’d be a forum meltdown so of course the age of the hardware is relevant especially as that has a direct impact on development costs.

That's the thing though, they outperform Xbox and PS games massively on this score. It's all relative.

Oh aye, they're just not the guaranteed 40 quid they used to be.  Except Breath of the Wild, ironically.

Yes. BOTW2 should be £70, and so should LOL Surprise! B.B.s Born to Travel.

I'm in the 'not' camp - I think it's too much. Whatever the platform - Switch, PS5, XBX, PC etc.

Switch is current gen, TOTK is being developed right now, stop trying to equate the value of a game to the power of the hardware and the number of polygons (or sprites) it's pushing around.

I’ve just ordered this for £50 from Game Collection, let’s stop with the £70 figure! It’s ‘only’ £60 even on Amazon!!

The game has been listed at that price for months, it doesn't mean it won't go up.

It was listed at $60 across all the major US websites who have all simultaneously pulled their pre-order pages at the exact same time Nintendo's US eShop listing was updated with a $70 price tag before being pulled.

It may or may not go up but if anyone is thinking of going physical now is the time to pre-order it. It's not going to get any cheaper and there's a reasonable chance it will increase.

Right now I think the age of hardware is becoming an issue sadly for more of the mainstream. I'd be happy for us to be a while off - my Switch gets a lot of love - but I'd think I'm probably in a minority of people in not constantly wanting 60 fps "latest and greatest" games.

More and more third party stuff is struggling to port well which I'm assuming is because there's now more of a difference in terms of what's required to run your middleware.  I can only assume that's the reason when it's games you wouldn't think would have a problem. River City Girls 2 comes to mind.

For me the switch is a great indie machine - it was wanting to play metroidvanias handheld that was my reason to want one. Well that and Dread.

The moaning about switch ports, hardware age and lack of power is getting more prevalent but at the moment if you look at the price of the main handheld competition (Steam deck) I'd say they're safe but we'll see today. If Nintendo are sticking with Switch as they're prime (snort) console then I'd expect to hear something about Prime. If not then I'd bet on the new hardware being 2024 and Prime being a launch title as well as a Gamecube library.

TSLR

Prime Trilogy plus 4 plz :)

Dunno if it's been mentioned, but does look like the price hike is legit.

That’s just a news article about the same Nintendo listing that people are talking about upthread.

I wonder whether price hikes elsewhere are just covering their backs after reading the same story we are.

The Game Collection (my shop of choice) have whacked up their price from £50 to £60 - https://www.thegamecollection.net/the-legend-of-zelda-tears-of-the-kingdom-switch

Game Collection was £49.95 an hour ago.

So do we think that extra money is going direct to the Saudi royal family?

I thought that was SNK - or do I now have a morally compelling reason to buy a steam deck and run all my switch stuff via piracy/emulation?

This is how I see today's direct playing out;

Doug Bowser "Welcome to Nintendo Direct. Let me introduce to you our first big reveal this year..."

Reggie walks on screen "That's right, I'm back. Like all of you, I asked myself 'Why have Nintendo stopped making good games?' (Looks at Doug with distain)

Doug "I apologize on behalf of everyone here at Nintendo"

Reggie "So I pulled up my sleeves and got to work. First of all, it's time for change (looks at Doug again) finally!

[New true followup to Switch announced, it's called 'Pebble', coming in May this year)

Eiji Aonuma pops up wearing a TOTK shirt "Hello!"

Reggie "It is 100% coming out on May 12th this year isn't it? No more disappointing delays?"

Eiji "100%. In fact I can reveal today that we have gone gold"

Reggie "Gone what? Oh you mean you have finished the game? Good. Though I have heard some concern from our beloved Nintendo community that TOTK looks a little dated? Like the colors look a bit muddy?"

Eiji "Yes, that is why we have been very hard at work to create a version of TOTK for the Nintendo Pebble, available on May 12th. Please watch this trailer!"

[TOTK, trailer is actually exciting this time and looks vastly different from before. Looks like a new game, in the best possible way]

Miyamoto "Hello! I am here to reveal a new trailer for Pikmin4!"

Reggie "This one they are ok with being delayed, I say we show this at a later date?"

Miyamoto "A new Mario movie trailer"

Reggie "No thanks, we're good. What we DO want to see is more on Metroid 4. What's the deal there?"

Miyamoto "This year! Here is an actual trailer! [does the click]

Reggie "Oh, we don't do the click anymore. That's old now."

[Metroid 4 trailer]

Reggie "Today we're not going to be showing you any of those weird samey Japanese RPG games, that will be saved to a new separate Direct that is clearly labeled as a JRPG one so you can easily avoid them. Instead, I'm going to show you the results of my work in the last few months. All of these games you are about to see are coming to the Nintendo Pebble. Enjoy!"

[PilotWings Forever]

[Luigi's Mansion 4]

[StarFox]

[MarioKart 9]

[Super Mario Odyssey 2]

[FZERO]
