The Oscars!

I was surprised to see that the ceremony is being shown on Sky Arts this year, and not exclusive to one of the Sky subscription channels. Sky Arts was added to Freeview in 2020, but I don't think the 2021 and 2021 shows were broadcast on there, were they?

So this is the first time I've watched it since the one year (2010?) when I watched a dodgy online stream. And the first time I've watched it legally since the BBC lost the rights in the early 2000s.

Although Sky Arts on Freeview did cut out to black for about a minute at the end of the last ad break. :hmm: (EDIT: It sounds like that black screen on the UK broadcast was when the US one showed a new trailer for The Little Mermaid.)

:hmm: I avoided any new replies to this thread of winners cos I was gonna watch in the morning. didn't know sky arts was showing it.

:hmm:

Surprised they didn’t shout about it more. First time Oscars have been free to view in years.

Do wonder if they thought 'should we give it to Brendan Fraser? See what he will do? Do we really want Butler do his annoying Elvis voice? He's not going to stop doing it, we're just encouraging him. What about Farrell? He's funny isn't he? He'll have some more stories about living with Barry Keoghan won't he? But Fraser will explode with pride'.

I'm going to have to get to the end of Everything Everywhere to find out about these feels people are feeling.

People forget that Hollywood love an old comeback narrrative to thier wins, so Quan, Curtis and Frasier are no surprise.

Quan has a great story (and was genuinely excellent), Curtis is hollywood royalty (but was sniffed at as a genre talent for decades) and Frasier is another big comeback story (film is pure shite though).

Sounds like Hugh Grant gave the best red carpet interview.

"What are you most excited to see tonight?"

"No one in particular."

“What are you wearing tonight?”

“Just my suit.”

“Who made your suit?”

“I can’t remember – my tailor.”

Jesus Christ. Slap in the face for Stephanie Hsu there.

This is the only baffling win for me. Stephanie Hsu was so much better in the same film. As much as I love JLC, she was bottom of the pile for performances in that category for me. But the academy love a narrative, she's a nepo-baby (even she admits it) and they love that shit.

Really pleased with the recognition of Everything Everywhere after being overlooked at many of the other awards ceremonies.

Yeah. I was recommending the movie to all my co-workers last summer and they all were a bit "hmm, interesting, maybe..." and then never saw it. Now that it got a few oscard it's the big talk in the office this morning.

We really need more original movies, especially Hollywood which has been recycling Marvel and old ideas for nearly two decades now.

I tried watching everything everywhere over the weekend and gave up after an hour. It didn't feel like an original idea to me, and I wasn't engaged at all. Really surprised it's done this well.

What! How is it not? When have you ever seen a film like this before?

Angela Bassett, Kerry Condon and Stephanie Hsu were all better and more impactful in their respectful roles than JLC's comedic turn as a bit part in Everything. An utterly bizarre win.

That said, I'd have voted for Banshees for best picture, and Farrell for best actor.

I also can't believe that The Whale got best makeup and hairstyling for a fat suit. That's pretty astounding when you're in the running with Black Panther and The Batman (Farrell's Penguin was an absolute fucking marvel).

Hey ho.

And the Oscars is very, very, very silly.

It was a win based entirely on who she was rather than the performance, but hard not to be pleased for her or any of the other 3 winners.  It was certainly a feel good sweep of acting winners.

I totally understand that, ultimately it's all pointless back slapping I guess.

The Oscars really need to stop this "give an oscar because they should have got one years ago or they are older" bullshit.

Cue Farrell getting an oscar in a couple of years for an OK performance to make up for this.

There's more to Curtis performance that a transformative comedy turn as Roz from Monsters Inc.  The hotdog hands romance and sit down at the end are key emotive bits of the film, which she supports, with her supporting actressing. I'd still have picked someone else though.

JLC's performance as a menacing antagonist was absolutely outstanding and totally deserves the win.
Stephanie Hsu was also outstanding in the film, but I do think JLC deserved it. EEAAO is a properly outstanding film, so I'm super happy to see the recognition. Did I mention things being outstanding?

All is Quiet on the Western Front was -for me- the best film out of those nominated. A seriously properly incredible masterpiece.

JLC's character in EEAAO really stuck out and was super memorable. Angela Bassett chewed the scenery in a low-tier marvel film, so in the context of the film, no amount of acting effort would make it that memorable. It was -as mentioned- scenery chewing.

I thought Everything Everywhere All At Once was absolutely awful. I'm pleased to see JLC get an Oscar though, and Quan's comeback story is pretty great. I've never been much of a Yeoh fan but I can't begrudge her achievement and I thought her acceptance speech was a great message.

You're using a film (one no where near as good) that came out two months before EEAAO as your example
