storing consoles in the attic? bad idea?

I'm thinking I could store my consoles in the attic/loft, it's cold up there as it's above the insulation. It doesn't feel damp though.

Anyone had a bad experience doing this?  Am I likely to ruin them?

Really depends on your attic.  My attic is usually warm but where I used to live there wert actual gaps in the roof tiles where the wind and rain could blow in. If you're saying it's cold I think it's probably not a good idea...

Could you get some moisture absorbing bags like silica gel or those pingi style ones that are meant to keep a car from misting up.

thanks! sounds like a good plan

I said this in another thread….

I looked into storing stuff in the loft as in an otherwise bone dry loft loads of boxes I left in there went really odd, I looked into it and its the heating and cooling with much more moisture than you would imagine - you need a very well ventilated loft for good storage, I did this and with stuff that was stored in plastic boxes it was ok but still made me wary of it.

More recently stuff ive stored in a bone dry garage (new build, town house garage built into the house) had some mould growing on the case of a handheld - it became obvious that something was on the case that had allowed the mould to grow, I assume that if you were to clean up all the items before storing this is vastly less likely to happen. Again it led me down a path of looking in to these things and it was quite clear that storing electronics in a loft or garage is a bad idea, mainly down to the humidity - its what killed all those cardboard boxes and its not good for electronics apparently.

Shit I need to get the Panasonic Q out the loft pronto form reading these comments but where to relocate it (and the SNES it shares a box with) the lean to is dry but unheated....the garage is dry but again unheated also I have had mice move into the leanto in winter (wrecked my cycling shoes) and have a horrible feeling there is one overwintering in the garage amongst all the junk I havent got around to throwing out.

I’ll happily store the Panasonic Q for you.

I’ve done the same, read this thread and had mild anxiety about stuff in the loft (SFC/MD games and other random guff) so have brought it down to try and find a better place to put it all.

In a morbid way this has kinda made me feel like I need to start a bit of tidying up/clearing out for when I snuff it. I’m 46.

On the other hand, I kept my old consoles including the high fail rate mega cd 2 in their original boxes which were then wrapped in big plastic bags up the loft for over 10 years. I fetched them down a couple of years back and have played through a bunch of games on them over many hours and all totally fine. Checked the boards and no issues . If you properly store and seal them they should be ok . I had to store my old consoles in the loft purely down to space issues (2 bed) before deciding to convert 2nd room to game room and office during lockdown. Naturally if you can find space elsewhere then do so.

Garages or god forbid, Sheds seem like real death sentences though

I need to sort out the attic anyway. Time to get a bunch of plastic tubs.

I've more got consoles as I don't throw things out. That and to have sometime for the games I've actually worked on. But considering I found a rom the other day of some shitty kids license game I made, I probably don't need them.

The attic has been converted (still a dumping ground) so it should be alright. Should I whack the heating on up there?
