Dragonlance - relaunch in 2022

I can't be the only one here who read the Dragonlance books over and over as a teenager, and then lost interest as the expanded universe books got churned out in greater numbers and lower quality.

Well, it seems like Wizards Of The Coast are giving it new life with some 5th ed game modules, and more importantly, a new trilogy of books from Weis and Hickman. Dragons Of Deceit came out a few months ago, and the reviews seem pretty good.

Thanks for the heads-up. I read these as a teenager, and the Death Gate a Cycle books too. I'm not sure how well any of that would stack up now, but would probably give one of these a go, if only out of curiosity and nostalgia.

The first two trilogies are still excellent, though you can see the origins in a gaming session.

So how does the timeline work now? Is this set between the original books but before the distasterous later ones where the gods left and it was all shite?

Not a clue. There’s loads I never read.

I went back and read the original book not so long ago, so quite keen to jump back in. Hopefully they do it well that you don't need to have read any of the original stuff, as I think I read the first six and then just the odd one thereafter.

I hadn't actually realised that the first book was out already. Is readily available in the UK? Haven't noticed it in any of the book shops I frequent.

I’m 80 pages into the new book, and it’s great so far. It’s started at a relatively small scale, and has just got to what looks to be a major plot point, but it’s so nice to be back in a familiar world.

Do we know how far forward we are in the universe when this takes place? I've always avoided anything Dragonlance aside from the original trilogy and the Legends one (which I still am quite happy to read through again after all these years). I'm wondering just how much open mouthed confusion I can expect when I get my mitts on this one!

Without spoiling anything, when it begins, it overlaps with the original trilogy and references events in the second trilogy.
You don’t need knowledge of anything outside those.

Super! This may well call for another re-read of my faves, and then a read of this one then :D .

I might even dig out my (very) old Art of Dragonlance book for maximum effect!

This one says it is a direct follow-on from the Chronicles and Legends trilogies but haven't there been a bunch of other books and series since then? I seem to remember a Chronicles part 4, and at least one other trilogy. Were they just shit and hence now being written out of canon?

This is quite difficult to do without spoilers, but it’s a new lead character. Their story runs in parallel to, and slightly overlaps the Chronicles then Legends books. It doesn’t seem to have any bearing on “expanded universe” books.

Chronicles part 4 (Dragons of Summer Flame) post dates both the chronicles and Legends trilogies by some years (most of the main cast have adult children). It’s it’s own thing basically (sequel to ‘Second Generation’ basically).

The fallen sun books take place after the fairly scenario explosive conclusion to Summer Flame.

These new books take place a lot earlier, between the Chronicles and Legends books (and slightly before and after).

Just bought the new one for my Dad for his birthday. Which feels really nicely circular for me, as I had the original trilogy, as a bumper edition, bought for me as a birthday present back when it was new. It went round my whole family, who all loved it, and to some family friends and so on. We all consumed all the sequels and so on.

But my bumper edition got absolutely trashed by the pass-round, and I remember flipping out at my parents for not taking care of it (I'm the sort of person that keeps his paperbacks in pristine condition) and was furious for ages about it - the covers were hanging off, the pages were all furled, there was sand in the spine and all sorts.

Years later, they had it rebound and all the mangled covers/spine embossed into a hardback, and I now have this really ancient-looking tome of the thing. It was a really touching present which I love.

My one regret about binning twitter was not taking some screenshots of a few lovely replies I got from Margaret Weis when I shared a photo of my very heavily worn and read to bits Trilogy paperback.
