120 fps gaming on the series x

Been enjoying some high fps gaming, thanks to my new Asus 4 k / 144 hz monitor. Despite a bit of a resolution downgrade in most games, I am really impressed coming from 60hz. What a difference this makes for speed and fluidity.

special mention goes to

halo infinite multiplayer

wrc 9.& 10

zombie army 4

dying light 2

gears 5 (not a fan of this series, but the high res and fps make it play very nicely)

ghostrunner

shadow warrior 3

doom eternal

anyone else enjoying these high frames rates on the series x?

It’s a great feature but sadly underused. Outside of Doom Eternal, the Resi remakes and a couple of Halos I don’t think I’ve played much that supports it. My son plays Rocket League and Fortnite too I guess.

It’s a real shame that indie titles don’t support this by default as they could probably hit 120 with ease. Stuff like Lonely Mountains Downhill would really benefit from this but remain resolutely capped at 60.

I can’t really tell the difference to be honest. It’s a luxury whereas 30-60 is the real game changer.

I eventually disabled 120fps support on my PS5. A surprising amount of games worked well with it but even as someone who can barely tell the difference between 4K/1440p I found the reduced graphic quality or resolution in most games too noticeable vs the small benefit in response times. Feels like 60fps is the sweet spot on console for now unless you're some hardcore competitive type.

Yeah, this entirely depends on how sensitive you are to the difference. Definitely into diminishing returns going over 60fps, but I can appreciate the difference on games like Ratchet & Clank and, most impressively, God of War Ragnarok.

It’s incredibly fluid and responsive. I noticed it straight away in halo infinite multiplayer and WRC 9 and 10 are like playing different games. As you have to set the console to 120hz, rotational blur or trailing is way less obvious, almost non existent really. Downside is usually the resolution is lowered (more a limitation of the console), but it’s balanced with reduced latency and much better responsiveness.

FPS games really benefit - shadow warriors 3 and doom eternal were Incredible, and only had minor resolution drops

its one of those things thing you really have to experience in person than watch, but this gives you an idea

Sometimes you see a difference, but mostly its about "feel"  The games feel smoother.  And the responsiveness is better from the controller.

I guess the part at which you're most likely to see the difference is fast left or right pans of the camera.

It is diminishing returns though.  I can feel the 60 to 120 fps increase on my PC monitor easily for example.  But I cant feel any difference between 120fps and 144fps - which is the max it supports.

There's a huge list of games which support 120fps here - much bigger than I thought it would be.

The difference to me is most apparent when switching back to 60 fps after spending a considerable amount of time with 120. 60 comes across relatively choppy in comparison, though of course not to the same extent as with 60 > 30.

Outside of gaming, I notice it even more when going back to a “normal” iPhone coming from the 120Hz screen of my Pro model.

I really dislike 120 FPS. It just isn't worth the Res compromise most games make you do to get it.

I’m the opposite. I can barely notice the difference between 1080p and 4K sometimes, but I notice the extra frames every time I move the controller. I’d go for the highest possible frame rate in almost every situation.

Wow, not noticing the difference between 1080p and 4k? That will save you a lot of money.

I prefer 4k, 120 if I can.
