Games you want to like but can't

Basically every massive adventure/RPG. I don’t think I’ve been drawn into any since Skyrim. Whether that’s Witcher 3, BOTW, Cyber punk or No man’s sky. I’m blown away by the visuals, scope and art direction, I mean if I saw these as a kid I’d wet my pants but they just lose me. Maybe it’s my dislike for character focused stories, neither do I like having to relearn a new set of complex controls and UI as well as feeling overwhelmed by the size and breadth of these games, how do people find the time to rinse them all? They should be the games I love, I love Skyrim and still play it to this day but have bounced off everything similar since.

I don't. I just play the bits (of NMS) I enjoy. It's not character or story-based, it just let's me twat around in a big old universe. It's like life, except in a place where I have far more agency, cash, and freedom. I do have vague goals when I play, but it's more about just dicking about in the world, rather than pushing toward the goals I've set.

Whilst talking people into spending more money on games they might not like is risky... Elden Ring is the most "welcoming" game of that type that I've played.  There are still annoying bosses in there, but the worst ones are optional, and you can always wander off and find other things to do on the map. I think it's probably the new "best game to start with" for people who find them offputting.

And it's gone on sale this morning. So I'll give it a go

I've never got on with games like The Last of Us, Uncharted and Tomb Raider. It's difficult to explain, I just never get very far with them. It's not the setting or the story but I think it's the game design. I found this was God of War as well. I never really liked platform games either so maybe these are just fancy dressed up platform games...maybe that's the reason, I don't know.

I know they're great games and everyone loves them but I just cant.

On the flip side I love the Assassin Creed's, RPG's, FPS's, your GTA's, Red Deads and Turn based/strategy games.

That new animal crossing. Felt like endless busywork.

I absolutely loathed Outer Wilds when I first picked it up. It doesn’t make much sense, is a bit ugly, and is quite mysterious and bewildering. Luckily I dove back in again a few months later and kept at it. Best game.

Also, can’t believe the amount of BOTW slander here.

Breath of the Wild. Believe it or not, I eagerly awaited it as a return to a Zelda 1 style game world, but it turned out to be my personal minimalist Elder Scrolls clone hell. Once in a blue moon I boot it up again determined to at least finish and maybe "get it". It will then take mere minutes to turn into a slog of tasks boring me to tears. Don't get me started on the weapon degradation.

Hades. By all accounts if should love this; I'm a huge rogue-lite fan. But no, it continuously fails to capture my attention. I've bought it three times on different systems hoping it would click there. I've abandoned it three times. Simply not for me, sadly. But... maybe... part 2...?

I can understand Breath of the Wild being one. Zelda games in general, I’ve gone through the motions, although the only one I’ve got close to completing is Wind Waker, but even then I wasn’t actually enjoying it.
BotW… I just got bored and put it down. That was shortly after launch on WiiU and I’ve never gone back to it.

Another series I never enjoyed playing was Metal Gear Solid. I really wanted to like the first one, but despite looking pretty awesome at the time, I couldn’t get into it. I don’t have a problem with stealth games, I just didn’t like the way MGS played and controlled. I passed on MGS2 but I did buy Snake Eater. Didn’t get very far in that. Never touched the series since.

I’m almost the opposite. I think it’s just the time I get to put into gaming these days. A lot of open world games just make me feel paralysed by choice, and the feeling I need to play 40+ hours to see a resolution can put me off. I might not play it for a week or more and then when I go back I can’t get back into it. Happened in Witcher 3, GTA4, Mad Max…
Me with more gaming time like I had when I was younger would love open world RPG type games with intricate systems and lots of discovery and freedom. I don’t dislike them, I just don’t feel I can get enjoyment from playing more than one every so often.

Recent exceptions are BotW and Death Stranding which I just played obsessively
