Songs You Never Need To Hear Again

Let Me Entertain You is both a very bad song and somehow still completely ubiquitous in our everyday lives after about a quarter of a century of continuous play. I think unimaginative TV producers are largely to blame as it’s used as a bed when literally anyone starts some circus craft like grabbing some juggling balls or hopping on a unicycle and attempting to mildly entertain us.

Don’t Stop Me Now. The international anthem for people pretending they’re having a good time but are actually deeply sad inside. And also Queen are absolutely shit.

They took away negs. YOU CAN’T TOUCH ME.

I love Queen (I even play drums in a Queen tribute band) but Don't Stop Me Now is garbage.

People love it though. It always goes over incredibly well. Baffles me.

Queen's or Robbie Williams?

Both bad, but the Williams is excerable.

Robbie Williams. I’ve dragged Queen enough.

The Queen one is a song I cannot like, it's utterly charmless, there's famously shite Queen songs (Rain Must Fall, Party) that I like more.

Robbie Williams can do one.

Stairway to Heaven

This has been the cliché ever since Wayne’s World, so I kind of went with the idea that Stairway to Heaven is overplayed. Except, it really isn’t, is it? I had never even heard it until I got into Led Zeppelin myself and sought out the album as a teenager. It’s not that common to hear Led Zep on the TV or radio anyway, but when you do it’s unlikely to be Stairway to Heaven.

As for myself, sorry to add to the Queen pile on but “We will (we will) Rock You” can do one. Then again, I have a daughter who listens to what I assume is vocaloid, and hearing any of that music even once is more than enough. I’ll join in the stamping and clapping myself if it makes that pain go away.

edit - another one, Supergrass ‘Alright’. I was the biggest Supergrass fan in the world when they were up and coming. Before the album was released they did a Peel session which is where I heard Alright for the first time, and it was instantly my favourite track - really nice vibe and sweet guitar harmonies, loved it. Then the official released version came out and it was fucking Chas n’ Dave. I had to skip over it even back then when I was a massive fan.

See also:

The Kaiser Chiefs' I Predict a Riot being used over any footage of an angry crowd.

The Automatic's Monster (you know, the "What's that coming over the hill is it a..." song) being used over any footage of a monster.

As I remember it, nearly all the montages on Doctor Who Confidential made use of similarly literal soundtrack choices.

Same here. I know there are statistics about the record-breaking number of times Stairway to Heaven has been played on the radio (maybe just US radio?) over the years. But in my experience, the really long classic rock song from 1971 that you're most likely to hear on the radio is The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again.

(Which I like more than Stairway to Heaven, and I'm also not yet bored of it.)

Even guitar shop staff are probably less sick of hearing attempts at Stairway than they are of Under the Bridge, Seven Nation Army, Sweet Child o' Mine, etc...

In a live setting, I would gladly never hear Run To The Hills, Fear Of The Dark, The Trooper and Number Of The Beast at an Iron Maiden show ever again if it meant they played four songs with much more rare live appearances. Heard them way too many times.

Anything by ABBA.
Anything by the Bee Gees.

Who’s that nasal whiny twat? James Blunt. Anything by him.

Oh, and more recent versions of Deee-Lite’s “Groove is in the heart”, that’s had all the Bootsy Collins and Q-Tip parts removed.

Plenty of good shouts in this thread.

It does feel a bit angry man shouts at cloud as obviously these things get played so much because so many folk love them, but I guess my list would be

Anything by…

Robbie Williams

The Beautiful South

Simply Red

Adele

Abba

All overplayed and utter garbage to me, though I will confess some things mentioned in this thread I can’t get enough of (Bat out of hell, also I grew up with my dad playing Journey a lot so Glee, which I’ve never watched, made it like entering some weird parallel universe where suddenly people actually liked music I’ve lived my whole life..)

Other songs have fallen off my list, I Predict a Riot by the Kaiser Chiefs, actually most of their songs (Ruby was my most hated) I can live with since seeing them live (as a plus 1 not by choice, then again at a festival) and the atmosphere they can stir up in a crowd which was pretty special

Totally agree with you.

You're So Vain by Carly Simon.

I'm sure this one didn't used to get played so much, but for the last 10 years or so it's been totally abused.

When she sings "You had me several years ago" I think "time to get over it then. Jesus Christ."

I’m going to stick up for Simply Red here. I think once you untangle Hucknall’s personality from the music they’ve got some brilliant music. I’ve not sat down with any of their albums but as a singles band they’re no slouches.

Seconded. Simply Red had some great songs. I'd happily listen to "Lady Godiva's Room", "It's Only Love", "Something Got Me Started", "For Your Babies", "Thrill Me" or "Your Mirror" any time you like.

Similarly, I think Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" is enormous fun. I also like several Robbie Williams singles. But not "Let Me Entertain You", which is a tiresome retread of "Pinball Wizard".

I'd happily never hear a single note of Oasis's music ever again. Or their various solo endeavors. Or Noel's terrible collaborations with The Chemical Brothers. Just wipe them and their terrible, emotionally void, school-bullies-with-guitars music from history.

In comment to some selections already posted.

Oasis "Wonderwall" is such a morose and depressing sounding tune - and yet it gets trotted out for just about any occasion. The DJ we had at our wedding reception also played it - I was enraged at the time - it was 1996 - but still - it's agelessly depressing sounding

Oasis "Don't look back in anger" I just never understood what it was about - the opening lines "Slip inside the eye of your mind" is fingers down a chalkboard cringeworthy- along with that "is that all he can play?" Noel guitar riff/solo/string bend thing is just horrible. Fast forward to today and again it's another track that somehow has some sort of relevance - and yet the song makes no sense whatsoever. It's a Manchester thing

Robbie Williams - well, anything really - and yet Angels now only appears at weddings or Steve Wrights Sunday Lovesongs show - so I find it easy to avoid. No such luck with Rock DJ "I don't want to rock DJ, but you're making me feel so nice" I don't get it - along with the awful backing vocals that stab "ROCK" - "DJ". The worst one for me though is Let Me Entertain You - vocal straining (see also Lewis Capaldi and James Arthur) like trying to induce a rectal prolapse whilst on the toilet - just can't stand that vocal

On the subject of vocals - yes Bon Jovi - everything again, Living on a Prayer can get in the sea, but if you are ever unfortunate enough to endue "Lay your hands on me" trapped with no escape - that last ringing "Layeee your hands on meeeeeaaaah" will scar you far deeper in a single moment than multiple "Prayers". Amazingly successful band, one of the most prolific live bands where people actual clap and whoop at the end of everything they play - to encourage them to do more songs. Often dreamed of being at a gig of theirs where they finish a song and are met with complete silence from the audience, and they walk off and never come back, anywhere, ever again.

Also, the song IS ABOUT HIM. So it's not vanity.

It's only recently that I realised that Mick Jagger was on backing vocals on this. Wasn't it rumoured to be about him?
