Games you're ashamed to say you’ve never played

I gave these series a go but never really got into them-

Halo

Pokemon

Assassins creed

Bioshock

Metroid Prime

Admittedly I'd probably enjoy AC.

Metroid, megaman and castlevania were series I never got into but I did play several of them over the past few years ( infact I ended up playing every 2d metroid) .

I didnt pay much attention to Halo until got a Series S and played Halo Infinite for 40-50 hours (Which was brilliant)
I thought 'Master Chief' was either the bad guy like Darth Vader or bad guys(s) like storm troopers and in Halo you were a human fighting lots of master chiefs or aliens with him as the main bad guy, didnt realise you played as him

There are two demons I have to slay every time I think about my backlog, and they are Majora’s Mask and the whole of the Uncharted series.

I don’t think the latter is a source of shame, although I do think I’m badly out of the loop when it comes to gaming dialogue by not having played them. MM is a bad one though - I bought it on N64 and played the first few days, but I felt heavily discouraged by the limited time cycle. A bit like Pikmin, I didn’t like the idea of not being able to play at my own pace and take my time to explore, and it was enough to turn me off the game entirely.

Coming to it now, what would forum consensus be on where is best to play? 3DS, with its enhanced visuals, but would require dropping 40 notes on, or Switch, which I can play with the N64 controller, but which looks quite bad blown up on a 55” OLED?

None really, I don’t think there’s any genre or series I haven’t at least tried, although I’m sure they must be games I haven’t played that I’d enjoy. Hard to say isn’t it.

Maybe Shin Megami Tensei, I keep putting off playing those for some reason - I think it’s the only big RPG series I haven’t played.

Get the 3DS version. It won't ever depreciate in value and it has a kinder hint system missing from the N64 version.

There's nowt I've not played I'm ashamed of, but I am a little bit ashamed I've never completed Xenogears

I played it roughly 50% of the way through and gave up, which is the worst time to quit a gigantic RPG. You feel like you've been through it so revisiting it throws up a psychological barrier. Then at the same time you have a sense of loss for never having seen the ending. OK, that's it, I'm starting it again!

I'm also ashamed I gave up on Majora's Mask (several times) as I'm a lazy gamer and stupid. I won't be playing it as I just can't face the amount of mental effort required, so my shame will continue in perpetuity :(

Damn; I completely forgot about Xenogears. I gave up about 20 hrs in due to time constraint I think.

But if there's one game i need of a lovely 2D HD remake!

Final Fantasy VII, I suppose? Started a playthrough about ten years ago and got sucked into university work, so I didn't go back to it.

Other than that, Resident Evil 2 is a game I've picked up and dropped several times over the years now. I'm not sure why, I like it when I'm playing it.

Genuinely can't think of one I'd say I'm ashamed of, but I've never played a God of War game. Keep thinking of trying either the remaster of 3 or 2018 but I think the apparent disconnect between what is and what was might be putting me off a bit.

I'm going against the forum consensus and saying I prefer the N64 version. I think the play style is much more suited to a console than a handheld.

I'm ashamed to say that I've never played the sims.

Yeah, I'm the same. Ocarina is one of my favourite games (it was my absolute favourite for a long time), and I've played every other console-based Zelda. But I just can't get on with MM for the same reasons as you. Even though I realise that it's a masterpiece.

There's a couple of games I never played, but would have liked to back when they were the next big thing, such as the original Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy 7 (I never did own a Playstation 1). But generally I guess I've played at least one game in pretty much every major gaming franchise.

The big one for me though is not a particular game, but more forum-related. I've read the various Edge threads over the years ever since I joined. I know that Doom got a 7 because you can't talk to the monsters etc., but to this day I have still never bought or read a single issue of the magazine.

Of course, the ultimate way to play the console form is on an actual RGB and deblur modded N64, going into at least a 20" PVM/BVM. Although that method is slightly beyond the realms of a casual recommendation.

I also prefer the N64 version of Ocarina of Time, mainly because they butchered the fonts and save file screen on the 3DS version. Low frame rates are fine on a CRT.

About majoras mask, im not too keen on it either, and struggled with the time limit when i tried to play it originally on n64, tried again on 3ds and

Spoiler

Used a guide a bit and theres a song you can play to slow down time or something to make the time limit a lot more barable,

I still didnt really get on with it but it was a lot better knowing that in case anyone didnt know.

I owned a Wii as my main console that generation. However I almost exclusively played Smash Bros. Brawl, and weirdly the Goldeneye remake.

Metroid Prime trilogy?

Mario Kart Wii?

Project Rainfall Games?

Mario Galaxy?

Skyward Sword?

Okami?

Pikmin?

Never played any of them lol.

(Apart from Xenoblade Chronicles which I got part way into a few years ago)

Never played Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Maybe I should, but I am concerned that it might’ve aged inelegantly during the last quarter-century, and I will be disappointed when/if I eventually play it…

It will never age. It's nigh on perfect.

Wouldn't say I'm ashamed but I have never played a Pokémon game. And never will.

As a self-proclaimed Nintendo fanboy and MMO/XP-bar collectables/grind addict I reckon they're fucking shite. I've tried about three times to force myself into them. GB Yellow, GBA Sapphire (and later Emerald), and Switch Shining Pearl. Roughly 50 hours on each. I think I'm done now.

It used to be easy to keep up with 'essential' games, at least on platforms you owned. So I missed out on Halo for a decade until it was remade for the 360, for example, and really felt I was missing out.

But now, there's just so much stuff being made, I no longer care enough to track essential games. I'll pick up a buzz in here, now and then, but there just isn't time enough.
