Updated my list and placed Chained Echoes at number one for game of the year.

Only 15 hours in, but it is just pure bliss.

SNES RPGs hold a small spot in my heart, as I played PS1 RPGs first, and for this game to shine as brightly as it does for me is a testament to just how good of an RPG it is.

If you are even a slight fan of 90s JRPGs, but are happy to see new twists to progression, this is more than likely to hit you in all the right ways.

Are expansion packs eligible?

I'm thinking here specifically of Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, which was bigger than the actual game it was an expansion for, and was nearly as expensive as a brand new game. In my mind it is a great game that came out this year, but I accept it might not be eligible under the rules.

Game of the Year

1. Elden Ring

2. Gran Turismo 7

3. Sniper Elite 5

4.

5.

Biggest disappointment:

1. God of War Ragnarok

2. Gran Turismo 7 shop system

3. That it took me so long to get around to playing either Cyberpunk or Doom Eternal, which are two of the best games in their respective genres I've ever played. Even in 2022 if both were eligible they would take up a lot of the slots on this submission. Doom in particular is the absolute pinacle of FPS gaming, I cant even begin to fathom how anyone could top that.

Spoiler

Just to elaborate on the disappointments as this is such a broad category:

1. PS5 - after finally getting my hands on one tail end of 2021, I have barely touched it apart from Elden Ring.

2. Postponement of Advance Wars 1 + 2 remaster - we will ever see this now? Who knows.

3. Switch Online Expansion Pack - the trickle of games on this is inevitable but incredibly frustrating anyway. I'd hoped they would have added GB and GBA by now. I have barely touched it. And you know you will lose access to it all as soon as the Switch 2 comes out.

As you can see my gaming has fallen off a cliff - mostly due to my age, but not much disposable income this year to spunk £70 on a game and then shelve it!

Elden Ring dominated 2022 for me - was the only thing on the gaming map I really looked forward to - and it was really great - although I still have the last 2 bosses to do to complete it! (Melania and the final ones, both bastards)

It seems therefore odd to include it as a disappointment - this was due to the shoddy performance optimisation, again, this time on the PS5's "performance" mode - embarrassing stuff - the only way to play was the PS4 version on the PS5. For the love of god FromSoft, please seek help in your performance optimisation for fuck sakes, it's not shameful to ask - there are talented individuals out there that can help you I'm sure.

Biggest disappoint though is definitely the new COD - the IW crown has slipped - the MP core in this is nowhere near the quality of 2019 - and it's not just the maps - the whole thing is a bit of a shambolic mess with no attention to quality and sloppiness everywhere you look. It's approaching 2 months and patches are slow to appear, for £70 it still feels like it's in a beta phase after 3 years of development.

Quote

Game of the Year

This had to be Elden Ring in the end, simply because of the time I spent with it, the fabulous sense of exploration and challenge and the way From pulled off the trick of expanding their template into the most ambitious open-world since Breath of the Wild. But the game which most excited, surprised and fascinated me this year was Pentiment and I very nearly put it top of the list. Immortality had a similar impact on me in terms of how much I thought about them when I wasn't playing them. I played Dying Light 2 in a lull when nothing was really scratching my gaming itch and it was the nicest surprise of the year. The story was a distraction that I skipped right past, but the mechanics were rock solid and I somehow didn't really mind the Ubisoft map-marker template because the minute-to-minute gaming was so well executed. Vampire Survivors is a late-night kebab of a game. Not terribly good for you, but absolutely delicious.

Gamepass and first-party releases

This year the lack of first-party releases on Gamepass was my biggest disappointment, but weirdly it was also my favourite platform. I've never been a Gamepass evangelist because so often I end up feeling like I'm half-playing six or sevens out of ten. But it just so happened that in Pentiment, Immortality, Tunic and Vampire Survivors it finally did that thing of giving me a bunch of games I might otherwise have missed that really connected with me.

Quality and quantity of writing in AAA releases

Elden Ring's way of telling a story really put in perspective the way most AAA games do it these days. Across the year I got increasingly impatient with endless scenes designed to make me care about characters but which in practice, given my limited gaming time, just did the opposite. I spent too long not playing very good games this year because I was fast-forwarding through their dialogue trees. Towards the end of the year, Pentiment and Immortality highlighted the potential for narrative in games  and the need for a rethink of the AAA model.
