You literally don't have to follow the rules if you don't want to. I'm just telling people how I'm going to collate them. So it's up to people to decide if they want to follow the guidelines to help scoring accuracy.

Anyone can manually tally the votes from the thread as well if they want to. The thread is open for voting but it doesn't have to be me doing it, as it uses the same template format as every other year.

Wow! That's more excitement than we usually get in these voting threads...

Some words:

Spoiler

Horizon Forbidden West - and why it doesn't quite make it to my GOTY. There aren't many games that could pip HFW to be my best game of the year. I really enjoyed my hours in that game, felt connected to the world, the characters and the story. I liked how Aloy's character had developed from the first game. Her unstated autistic tendencies, her difficulty with other characters and dealing with their problems (especially that one particular person...) and her journey into another part of the post-apocalyptic world of machines. The graphics and sound design were spectacular and the control and combat intuitive. And while a lot of people moaned about Aloy just shutting the fuck up for a bit I wasn't too distracted by her constant mutterings. It's just one of those things, like when I see the way forward her saying "maybe I could try climbing that" is like yeah I KNOW!  But when I've been scrabbling around for five minutes and getting frustrated with not knowing where I can go and her saying "maybe I could try climbing that" and I'm like YES! Thank you. So it's a bit of swings and roundabouts. So why isn't it my GOTY?

Because Elden Ring...

Elden Ring is a masterpiece, there is no doubt in my mind that it deserves every 10, every 100% it got. A masterstroke of game design, world building, challenge and imagination. It's superb, and I really must finish it! I've put about 150 hours in, so I've definitely played A LOT, but there is so much more and so much detail and so much still to reckon with that I could easily put in another 150 and not feel like I'd finished with it.

Gran Turismo - it may be a similar beast to all the other GTs over the years and the UI and navigating around its world may be a little counter intuitive and it may even have had some struggles with credits and car costs... but my god it's a good driving game. It feels so real, even just using a pad, the haptic triggers allow extra feedback that you don't even realise it's giving you half the time - but then you find yourself easing off the throttle and carefully pushing it back to full as the haptics were telling you the car was beginning to lose grip. Very smart, very good looking, lovely to control. Now if they could just make the AI a little more believable we'd be looking at a GOTY contender.

Vampire Survivors is one of those, what's this? Type games. Where you go, what's this? It looks like a mobile port and then twelve hours in you're still hankering for more! A game written by someone from the gambling industry and it bloody shows, the aim of the game is simply to exist and get MOOOREE, more of what? More of EVERYTHING. Great game and ideally suited for the Deck too.

Immortality is not a game... and yet it is a game. It is certainly interactive entertainment and is a fascinating use of gaming techniques to create something from film. It is a really interesting experience and well worth everybody putting 10-20 hours into.

Satisfactory keeps on being played (800 hours and counting). Update 7 came out just last week (hot on the heels of Update 6 in August) and it adds even more quality of life improvements to a smashing game. There is something about this that just keeps you coming back, it's not the end game because that (frankly) is a pain in the arse to do. But its methodical gameplay of building efficient and beautiful factories for no reason other than because that's your job is addictive and yes Satisfying! Plus Fixit Christmas is the best :D

Icarus was a late 2021 release and is a fun co-op survival game - just the sort of game me and my pals like to get dug into. Gorgeous planet, crafting, nasty creatures and just fun to play. If they can just sort out their performance issues and maybe make the world a little more alien, it'd be nearly perfect.

Slay the Spire - still playing it, still watching Jorbs, still feel like there is more for me to achieve.

I'm beginning to remember why I don't run these any more.

On that note, I have to remove my hat from the ring, too. I'm working most of Christmas. Worse than that, I'm on call! And some people believe in a god?! We live in a hell scape, I tells ya.

So, organisers, does Hades qualify for this year's vote...? ;)

Had a properly laugh out loud funny morning catching up with the drama over a coffee.

“Would you be alright to copy and paste the title of the game to save the person collating the votes for free as a nice a thing for the forum literally tens of hours?”

”YOU’RE A CUNT!!!”

Largely fantastic stuff, congrats to Elden Ring on the win.

I went out for some birthday drinks last night, on the night of an England World Cup exit, that didn't even come close to kicking off like this thread. Top bombing on the internet, fellas.

Anyway, I'll be back once I look up the Wikipedia entry for the Steam Deck and paste the title 22 times

Shouldn't a mod delete all the posts relating to the hilarious Cassidy meltdown? Just think that would make it easier for whoever is collating results.

No mods should interfere with any posts in this thread. It'll upset my algorithm. :hat:

RAMBLINGS:

Spoiler

Game of the Year

1. Tunic (video game)
For all the other games in my nominations, this is the best because of how utterly enthralling the high points and revelations were in Tunic. The instruction manual driven gameplay was absolutely inspired, beautiful to look at, and absolutely had me feverishly work out all the puzzles on notepads, something that I haven't experienced since Zero Escape. Absolutely unforgettable experience.

2. Neon White
Since playing it on Steam Next Fest, I knew this was going to be a corker, solely based on how it plays. It's a pure masterclass of FPS execution and game design, gently coaxing you into pushing your own skill at beating levels fast and experimenting with the tools the game gives you until you become a force of nature as you claim the top awards. Top it off with this year's best soundtrack, perfectly solid visuals and a questionable anime plotline, and you've got a GOTY contender for any year you throw it at.

3. Vampire Survivors
It's cheap both in price and looks, and it's only a little more involving than a cookie clicker. But not only does this game tickle your dopamine responses, it also satisfies long-tail play as well - not unlike a good Roguelite, every run you do will reward you with something to be more empowered, slowly driving you to become a (mostly) unkillable wall of death. It's probably the most satisfying power curve I've experienced since Katamari Damacy.

4. PowerWash Simulator
Another dopamine game, but unlike the above, it requires you to think very little about it - you plod along and clean levels at your pace and leisure. As a result, it's the perfect game to play alongside Youtube and Twitch Streams, or just when you want to be Zen. It's a really lovely game, full of character, and even has a lovely ending. I'm looking forward to any updates to scratch my brain some more!

5. Flat Eye
I dig Theme Hospital, and I also dig horrific Black Mirror-style visions of the future. As a result, I like this game.

Biggest disappointment:

1. Ghostwire: Tokyo
All the presentation in the world can't prevent this game being a drab collectathon.

2. Rollerdrome
Honestly, it's not bad. It is, however, the owner of the most convoluted control scheme since Steel Batallion.

3. Beacon Pines

I actually quite like this game. It just wasn't the shocking 'Cute animals in body horror situations' game reviews made it out to be - Although games like Doki Doki Literature Club and Danganronpa have generally spoiled me with gruesome rugpulls. also, the branching was a little simple, but I guess that's because it's a short game and it's not Zero Escape.

Best visuals

1. Immortality (video game)
Absolutely astounding technical achievement for an FMV game, and the work put into it must have been absolutely absurd.

2. Rollerdrome
I might not like the game that much, but the visual and thematic style was outstanding.

3. Neon White
Clear, fast, fluid 60FPS action that didn't miss a beat.

Best audio

1. Neon White

2. Trombone Champ

3. Windjammers 2

Best writing

1. Immortality (video game)
Again - hashing out three entire movie scripts along with all the backdrop to it is an astounding triumph for the medium.

2. Flat Eye

As mentioned in the previous entry, there's some proper Black Mirror moments that are a treat to see play out.

3. Trombone Champ

The obligatory 'there's not much, but the lore got belly laughs out of me' entry. Very funny, even when you're not parping. The poo gags are a bit lame, however.

Best not 2022 game:

1. Final Fantasy VII Remake
Didn't play it until it got to Steam. Now it is, and I can say it's a superb retelling of the Midgar portion of the game - visually superb, the redone soundtrack is superb, and I love the more action-orientated gameplay.

2. Diablo II: Resurrected

Finally got to playing it after Path of Exile took a nosedive this year. Looks excellent, controller support is great, and it's the same Diablo II I love back in the 00s.

3. Cyberpunk 2077

Once again, only got around to it after a deep discount on Steam and all the hubbub about Edgerunners. Looks and runs amazing even when running on an APU thanks to the updates like FSR2.0, and it's a perfectly fun open-world RPG-FPS thing. Edgerunners itself was pretty good, too. CDPR are still shitters, mind.

Best developer:

Valve Corporation

For collaborating with various parties to establish Proton, and continually driving to make Linux a fairly neat way to play video games instead of just putting up with Tux Bowling.

Best format/console/controller/brain interface:

Steam Deck

Every single game I've mentioned in these nominations can be played (and in my case, have been played) on a Steam Deck, as well as essentially the last 40 years of video games, by hook or by crook. It's the best game related purchase I've made since assembling a PC at the end of the 360/PS3 gen.

I really don't know why I bothered putting Best Format in the template again this year: if it isn't Steam Deck that wins I think we'll all be very surprised

Could have also done with a "Best Multiplayer" category.

Like anyone's gonna bother anyway, you cunt.
