I don’t think Splatoon 3 was a flop but the online is busted. YMMV on the second part, it’s still fun but the tick rate/lag/ whatever it is that makes getting some kills a dice roll isn’t a) good enough to charge for and b) extremely frustrating if that sort of thing bothers you.

As of 30th September (21 days after release) it had sold 7.9 million copies. 13th on the system overall.

 

For comparison:

  • It's the highest selling game in Japan this year
  • Splatoon 2 has, in five years, sold a total of 13.3 million. 7.9 million copies in 21 days seems like a pretty good start to me.
  • Only 3 other Switch games not attached to Mario or Pokémon have sold more copies (Animal Crossing 40.1 million, Ring Fit 14.8 million, and Splatoon 2 13.3 million)

It's a success. Especially when you could argue it's cannot have been that expensive to develop considering some of its similarities to the second game

It looks fabulous actually, apart from Chris Pratt of course. The world is gorgeous and colourful and all the characters look great.

 

I really like Illumination films. They’re dumb as they come but they’re funny and full of slapstick, and kids love them. My 2 year old doesn’t give a shit about Pixar stuff yet, as it mostly aims for an older audience, but he laughs his head off at the minions.

isn’t there a big thing where the original script was supposed to be good enough to get Hoskins involved but warped over time to the film we got?

 

I watched this recently with my 4 year old and he engaged with it. It’s not a mario movie though, of course.  As a kids sci fi romp, it’s not utterly terrible.

Yeah, forum favourite Bob Hoskins said it was the worst film experience he ever had. Most of the time he was getting drunk with John Leguziamo while the script went through re-writes as Disney bought the distribution rights during production. Interestingly, it was the couple behind the original Max Headroom film who directed it and you could sort of see where they were trying to go with it. 

 

I watched it with my son a few months ago and he really enjoyed it, to the point where he watched it a couple more times of his own volition.
