Ah just buy it ... its not that expensive and give some money back to the devs...  :D Think I paid £30 on Xbox for it.. worth every penny IMHO....

I was thinking about getting a physical copy though as I only have a digital on the Xbox. But then I'd need a Switch or something... :)

Got the Switch version. First game on this collection I went to was the arcade version of Warlords.

Ramble follows:

Looking back I reckon my local village pub was sold the idea of getting an arcade cabinet in on the cheap. Because when a couple of big hitting machines had been in a nearby pub in cocktail format (Galaxian, replaced later by Moon Cresta) he got the very obscure and super generically named Astro Invader. That game turned out to be playable for quite some time on 10p and turned out to corrupt once a certain level was reached. Its replacement was Warlords, again probably the least classic Atari game he could've got in but clearly fun at its best with 4 players, not really that great for the single player. And the only time he had more than 3 people in his games room was when there was a queue for the pool table.

Anyway the colourful battlefield (an actual plastic model reflected my mirror I think?) and Breakout gameplay was fun for a while.

Fast forward a bit and I got the home version for the VCS. Gameplay was a fairly solid replica and the VCS paddles really brought the feel of the arcade game home, even if the banded graphics instead of castle ramparts were clearly a straight lift from Breakout.

As with any paddle or trackball game ever, emulating the experience with a joystick is never going to be ideal but this version does a pretty good job. Not near my Switch at the moment but if it supports 4 players then this will be out on Xmas Day.

Screenshot of the rightly forgotten curio Astro Invader for the curious:

Well, fuck that.  Even after deleting everything to do with the game, it now won’t start without the latest patch.

It seems that if you have updated at all, Warbirds is gone forever even if you delete the patch.

I tried it on my Switch Lite, which has never had the update, and it worked fine.  Looks like I will be playing Warbirds on my secondary Switches.

IF YOU WANT TO PLAY WARBIRDS, DO NOT UPDATE THIS SOFTWARE.

Bad news. So even if you have bought a physical version will it update and patch this out? Guessing it you just don't update anything you'll be fine however that means no bug fixes etc.

Sigh this is a sign of things to come I guess its actually questionable what you are actually buying if they can change and revoke things in their initial offering.

I remember when Sony patched out other OS support from their firmware (PS3)  technically altering and removing a feature that was part of the original console offering.  Of course you couldn't play the latest games unless you did a firmware update so nothing you could really do about it. Same as games. If they put some features in that depend on the update you loose out if you don't update.

Of course they will cover off everything on the T&C's which you sign upto when you buy the game or use a service.

Progress I guess. ;)

That suggests that everyone that has been raving about Tempest has been enjoying it at 30fps. What happened to rllmuk, is it broken?

Ssssshhhh this was one area of the forum where the mention of FR stuff wasn't mentioned. Until now at least :)

Think a majority of people playing this package don't really care that much about frame rates given the software catalogue on offer here.... :)

Pfft! Pretty much all 2600 games originally ran at 60 FPS (50 for us). There would be outrage if they screwed the framerates up. They'd have to be trying pretty hard to accomplish that, to be fair.  ^_^

Patch is now live. Best version of Tempest 2000 ever. As the first Jeff Minter game I played it's still quite a special experience.

If there is one criticism of this collection it is the Lynx/Jaguar section. The interviews are sparse and not very insightful. And the game selection isn't great but kinda understandable given that Atari don't own all the rights.

The Jaguar was a really good console for me back in the day - as someone who only had consoles it was where I played Wolfenstein, Doom, Cannon Fodder and Theme Park - all really great ports.

I've been playing a bit of Tempest 2000 tonight since the update. Strangely the Series S controller seems a bit laggy* on this compared to my older Xbox One controller (one before Series). Thought they'd reduced the lag on the new controller. Hmmm very odd. Other thing is that the analogue controller is now an option however if you enable it and using a pad the cross pad up and down stops working making the warp levels impossible.

Anyway T2K plays really well at least with the old controller! :)

EDIT * did a firmware update on the Series controller and it seems to have fixed the issue... :D Forget everything seems to need a firmware update these days.. sure it wasn't that long since I did this...

I love this guy. We’re best pals now, whether you like it or not.

Doesn't Theme Park Jag only save your bank balance and not your Theme Park?

I can't remember, but it definitely didn't effect my enjoyment of the game - it was always fun to build up to the rollercoaster and making sure it didn't completely wreck the design of your park.

Ha. I think Doom in particular was such a seismic game and I'm glad the Jaguar was there so that I could experience it. The 16 bit versions were severely compromised and technology moved on so quickly that by the time of Final Doom on PS1 it was a little old hat.

Just got this. God, it’s glorious isn’t it.

I Robot is still one of my favourite games. I can’t believe it’s so old, but then it always did seem years ahead of all the other stuff in the arcades. Seeing it on my telly at home is wonderful. Also great to have Tempest. Worth the price for those games alone.

The presentation and documentaries are excellent. Puts stuff like the cumbersome cash-grab Capcom Arcade to shame. Only glaring omission so far is all things Star Wars. Damn you licensing.

Seeing stuff like Yars Revenge, Miner 2049’er and all things Atari 600/800 in magazines was always exciting as we never had money for anything that high-tech. Binatone and later on Speccy for our house. So having it all laid out here is yet more middle-aged wish fulfilment.

Harsh on the Capcom Arcade Stafium. I think it's pretty great in all fairness.

I find the interface very cumbersome to use, the package lacking in features, and poor value unless you get it on discount, which I guess it often is.

I really like the game selection interface, never seen it done better I think. Everygame has high score leaderboards and different challenges. It's really great for what it is. There are FAR worse collections out there, far, far worse.
