Out 11th November. Ordered the Xbox version. Love things like this shame there is no booklet to accompany it.

Even has Jag games on there... So perhaps I might get to play Tempest 2K again hopefully with the Jag soundtrack unchanged!

Atari died a long time ago

It did. But at least we have a taste of what they did and something to commemorate them!

As for when they died probably when Warner got there hands on them and Nolan B went. Still good to have all this in one convenient package.

Let's face it too Minters take/upgrade on Tempest was pretty damn good IMHO. (Yes unfortunately I did buy a Jag but this was it's saving grace for me!). Just having easy access to this is a massive bonus for me.

And for me Trevor McFur and Fight for Life too :D Think I only had four games for the Jag Doom, T2K, Alien Vs Predator and of course Cybermorph.

Every time I see an eBay auction I have to rely on fb memories to remind me which games I already have.

eg.

And Atari karts is definitely “on the list of needs”, and ultra vortex… for completion’s sake. Fuck double dragon though.

What no T2K in the collection?!

Quite liked the Jag had a British homebrew feel about it though :D I guess fundementally it was a British designed box (wasn't it developed by some of the ex-team from the failed Konix console?!).

Anyhow really looking forward to this Atari collection and the six new games they have added in. Be interesting to see how they play!

Hey, I like the Recharged games 👍

and tempest4k is superb :D

Atari are obviously a zombie company that is nothing but a name owned by a corporation wanting to shill for cash (see the Atari VCS thing they "released").

However they farm out these projects to third parties or strong arm already developed product (TxK/Tempest4k). So this might be a good collection if the dev they have farmed it out to is any good. If the "original" stuff (especially Tempest2k) is a pixel perfect recreation then its worth it in my book.

So it could be a Tempest4k or it could be an "Atari VCS"

For some reason, even though I never had one (or played one apart from emulation/ Antstream) I really like the look of Atari 7800 games. Those big blocks of low-detail colour have such a nostalgic retrogaming look. It's always reminded me of the scene in Superman 3 when the baddie (who I just found out isn't Lex Luthor played by Gene Hackman, despite my memory telling me it was) is trying to shoot down Superman with missiles, and the control system for the missiles is designed to look like a video game.

(In fact, as I just found out, while checking info to make this post, it was actually created using a video game prototyping system developed for Atari! - interesting article for anyone who doesn't know about this - https://www.cbr.com/superman-iii-atari-video-game-created-for-movie/ )

I must admit when the early Atari carts came out on Evercade the 7800 stuff got lots of play. There's some really good games on those collections.

maybe Sega will start acknowledging that the Saturn exists next.

How is the emulation for the Saturn these days? Not tried it for ages. Pretty complex machine to emulate lots of hardware in there.

when sega pulled out of the hardware market there was a suggestion that they’d port Saturn exclusives to the PSone.

Seems to have come on leaps and bounds in the last couple of years. There's Saturn games been released on Switch of all things.

The reason the Jag has been ignored is mostly down to the fact it is apparently difficult to emulate accurately. I think some progress may have been made in this field recently - it would be an interesting thing for @striderto ask Atari about if he or anyone at RG are planning on talking to Atari about the new collection.

I agreed, it's already one of the questions we're planning to ask. Same with Lynx as its sound emulation is pretty poor on things like Handy.

  • 1 month later...

I heard about this on the Easy Allies podcast as part of their Day of the Devs discussion, and thought it sounded like a brilliant way to compile and present historically significant games, as opposed to the usual bunch of roms that we tend to see dumped into similar compilations or mini consoles.

I have no real knowledge and certainly no nostalgia for anything Atari at all, and I suspect many of the games are unplayable for people like me, coming from that lack of experience or fondness, but I’d still be very interested in playing bits of these games while accessing them from a curated presentation. Almost like studying them for historical and cultural interest, if nothing else, being able to read / view the surrounding pieces of historical context and development accounts that are presented alongside the games, explaining why a certain game is regarded as being significant or influential or what have you.

I think it includes 90 games total from various Atari home consoles (including the Jaguar omgwtflol). Dunno if it’s full games, or little playable, easily digestible snapshots and vignettes, but I think I’d prefer and appreciate the latter, if indeed the whole package is intended to be consumed like something more akin to a playable encyclopaedia.

Destructoid blurb:

Quote

Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration

Digital Eclipse is putting together a retro collection, celebrating the history of Atari. The 90+ game collection was shown off today, as part of the Day of the Devs showcase.

But it’s not just a collection of classic games, but the history and world around them. Today’s spotlight makes Atari 50 look like an exploration of the era through the lens of Atari, and it seems like a cool way to experience a piece of gaming history. That’s out on November 11, and you can find it on Steam here.

Googling for more info suggests that in addition to Steam it’s also coming out on PlayStation, Switch and I’d assume Xbox, November 11th.

I’m reminded somewhat of the NES Remix games, which I utterly adored, that allowed you to play snippets and snapshots of historically significant NES games within a curated context. See also the 9-Volt sections in the Wario Ware series, and reading the collectible trophy descriptions in SSB Melee. This Atari package sounds like it’s all of the above mixed into a blender. With way worse games, but whatever. I’d love this encyclopaedic compendium type presentation of old games to become a trend. Imagine Nintendo, Sega, Capcom etc all doing similar 🤤 👌🏻

I like the idea of really demonstrating and explaining to the players why a certain game should be deemed worthy of playing, rather than just being a bunch of roms with no cultural or historical context.

/\ Posted something a month or so on this... out this Friday.

I've been looking forward to this a little bit of history and some games to tinker with.. also includes six newer games  apparently.

Always wanted to play Tempest 2K again and the Jag was a great update by Jeff Minter - and to be fair probably amongst the best games on the console.... although looking forward to experiencing what I did miss too... Trevor McFur.. karts etc... :D
