You're all mad. We'll comfortably beat Iran. You know when you see someone with a Motorhead t-shirt and it's from Primark and you say, "name three songs!". It's the same. Name three Iranian players. None of you can.

Spoiler

Killed by Death, The Game, Ace

If I recall, wasn't that a pretty dire game too (albeit with a fabulous upset)?

It was a great game if you're a fan of spectacular fouls. There was one foul on Caniggia that's absolutely iconic.

There's a great iPlayer programme about it. Worth watching. The foul on Maradonna was worse. I'm amazed Maradonna got back up. He was a tough little shit mind.

Benjamin Massing.

One of the best/worst WC fouls ever, although how Caniggia made it that far after the two assassination attempts is quite astounding!

Claudio does contribute to that iPlayer documentary. He says it's the best foul of all time.

The only thing I knew about the Qatar football team before this game is that they were the worst team on the original FIFA International Soccer on the Megadrive so everybody used to pick them as the opposition in friendlies just so they could trounce them.  Thirty years later the actual Qatar team don’t appear to be much better.  The Ecuadorean family who live next door to me seem quite happy about this if the cheers were anything to go by.

Della Savia & Brian Plank would smash them in against Qatar

I think the problem with all opening fixtures is that they aren't Argentina Vs. Cameroon in Italia 1990.

The South Africa opening match was very memorable. Vuvuzela’s and this great goal and celebration.

I think you always remember your first World Cup. Mine was USA 94, Germany beat Bolivia 2-0. I watched it at a pub/restaurant that had a petting zoo. Weird place.

Mine was 1978. No England but for some reason I was drawn to the Netherlands throughout and they are my 2nd team to this day.

How do you think this will go down tomorrow? They back out of it, or continue on and Kane starts on an instant yellow card? I take it the ref has to show him the card on the pitch before actual kick off - or yellow card him at the coin toss!
