If this weren't Engerland you'd all be saying the same fucking thing.

Again, almost all knockouts are like this, if not 'worse'. These matches are terrifying and tense for all involved, and not conceding becomes much more of a priority than in most club football.

Excellent performance in the end.

We were shaky for a period in the first half when Maguire and Stones were giving the ball away in dangerous areas and we looked a bit nervy, but after Bellingham took the game by the scruff of the neck we looked better and better as the game went on.

Adding a third and then killing the game with absolutely assured possession football was the perfect second half really.

Taremi is still the only guy who's managed to score past us, and we have an array of good attacking options. Plus we've got Bellingham playing like Gazza in the midfield.

:)

Looked pretty easy to me.

True.

England are weird though. In the last few games they have been pretty poor in the first half then far better the second. In this game they were shit for 40 mins then got the two goals. Rightly stepped off the gas.

Will need to up their game for France though.

I'm really looking forward to it. If England can beat France then I think you can win the whole thing. (Boak!)

Edit: I retract that last sentence in fact. What was I thinking?

France looked worse against Poland than England did for this entire game. Let's not pretend France have been playing some sort of outstanding football.

Tonight could be Southgate's last game.

He's done better than anyone could have hoped and all this nonsense about "Being too defensive" is balls, because good defences win Tournaments.

It's also great that a nice guy without a huge ego or that old school manager vibe (Big Sam, Redknapp) got the job and has been rewarded for it.

However things go, thanks GS. It's been a great ride.

What an idiot.

When we went long and won second balls, we were great.

We need to do that against France. Put it up top. Kane's a fantastic target man.

All of  the French  goals so far  have come from 3 players . Englands  have come from 8.

france will be the favourites and rightly so. But, England have a chance, and most importantly , I think the players believe  they can beat them.

Foden on Bellingham:

"I don't want to big him up too much, but he's the most gifted player I've ever seen, he hasn't got a weakness in his game, and he's going to be the best midfielder in the world."

I'd love to hear the version where he did big him up.

Hamus is Neg. Just stick him on ignore.

Made that look like a walk in the park. Southgate will never get the credit he deserves for inheriting the mess he did and making us into a proper team. The best thing is we look like we’ve got more to give and are purposely keeping it in our pocket. I  think if we shit France then we’re winning it.

Who decided that England adopt Sweet Caroline?

Its a fucking shite song that has absolutely no relevance to football or England.

Leave it with the Carolina panthers

Not sure how or when the song carried over to football but it has been used elsewhere a fair bit before. Had several drunken singalongs to it at the Dubai Rugby 7s back in the mid-2000s, when the stadium DJ whacked it on as the sun was going down.

Darren Till also walked out to it for his UFC fights, which also got the crowd singing, in the UK at least. Also got a good airing at a recent NFL London game.

It makes no logical sense why it’s taken off for England, but it’s very, very hard to not singalong with when you’re in a crowd, especially if you’re feeling upbeat. A bit like how Liverpool have adopted Dua Lipa’s One Kiss since she performed it at Champions League final. Easy, breezy song a crowd can below out.

It came from the darts. That Worlds crowd over a decade ago and spread from there.

France don't have Bellingham, and he really is a special fucking player. It's a mouth watering quarter-final. :)

Southgate has now matched Sven by getting England to the QFs of three successive tournaments (in both cases, WC-Euros-WC).

Southgate, of course, got them a bit further both times so far...

Without the benefit of the “golden generation”, and with most of his stars being at the earlier part of their careers.
