When your bet is hanging on Poland having three shots on target!

I had France 3 Poland 1 and Lewandowski to score last. Thought I'd fucked it but FUCKING GET IN POLAND. Last kick of the game.

Spoiler

Rashford out, Saka in. I think that's a bit odd, as Rashford has looked our most dangerous attacker over the tournament as a whole.

It's a red herring though because all our wide options are good. The question is who is playing in midfield? I wonder if Walker will play in order to get him match fit before he's potentially given the task of stopping Mboopi.

Senegal gonna beat England. McGuire red card early on. Southgate out. Heard it here first.

Maguire to score an exquisite hattrick of headers but Senegal to draw 3-3 due to some horrendous OG by, checks notes, also Maguire.

Southgate to come on and score penalty in sudden death to redeem his howler of Euro '96.

<mumble, mumble> Death, taxes and England performances...

Top scorers in the group stages though. Two out of three performances have been very good, it's just that Senegal will probably pose a similar problem as the USA game - they'll be more energetic than us, and I can see us shrinking out of the game.

Here's a cat that looks like Phil Foden.

This made me laugh out loud. I was sceptical how much likeness they'd be, how much can a cat resemble Foden really, but it exceeded all expectations.

I know this was days ago but i looked it again today and it still made me laugh.

I hope it's not a sterile game, I was sort of looking forward to it, going to make fajitas.

Henderson starts again

I thought he would, and I'm not against it.

In the sterile, swimming gala atmosphere of the half-full second round matches at this failure of a World Cup, listen out for Henderson basically telling every other player in the team what to do at every moment. He's there to stop the indecisive lethargy that gripped England during the USA game. He might not be able do a huge amount of running, but he'll make sure everyone else does their share. Sometimes you need a cheerleader on the pitch, and he'll be bringing his pom-poms.

ITV going massively over the top about Foden, a guy who hasn't really done anything for England. He got a tap-in against Wales of course, and he won the free-kick for Rashford's first goal. Is that enough to justify this? I hope he proves them right, but it is coming across as ridiculous right now.

Well it's about what he did in the u17 world cup for England isn't it?  Best player of the tournament who turned the final around from a losing position, who was rated higher than any other young player in the country. It's just about his promise. Their focus was on that, he hasn't yet stood out as different or better than any other player out wide in this England team.

Neville said 'if we can't get the best out of him we might as well give up' but maybe the team isn't set up for him to excel, he's emerged after Southgate had established his way of attacking and I think he'll always just be more peripheral than people want, and mostly Southgate will prefer more pace and directness than what Foden brings, even though he can do that. Then again Saka emerged later and has taken that right side..

Sure, I have no problem with them looking back to the U17 WC win, but out of that VT, Pugash said "Aren't England ALWAYS better with Foden in the team?" (The answer is no. We've never really seen him elevate the team.) Then there was a period when they all took turns to say "He's a game changer" to each other. It was a bit much considering his actual performances for England so far.

I'm a fan of Foden, I think he's a terrific player. But I'm wary of the way out media will pick one guy at Random and put them on a pedestal. That pedestal has been occupied in the past by Grealish, Carroll, and Gareth Barry.

Tonight could be Southgate's last game.

He's done better than anyone could have hoped and all this nonsense about "Being too defensive" is balls, because good defences win Tournaments.

It's also great that a nice guy without a huge ego or that old school manager vibe (Big Sam, Redknapp) got the job and has been rewarded for it.

However things go, thanks GS. It's been a great ride.
