He's correcting his earlier assertion that the level of foul is immaterial.

I'm with you, Gotters, but from the other perspective. I think DOGSO should be a penalty wherever it occurs. If denial of a goalscoring opportunity doesn't result in the award of a goalscoring opportunity, it'll be abused.

Yeah, so the way I've always interpreted it, any fouls is a free kick at least.  If any foul by the defending team happens in the penalty area of the defending team, it's a penalty.  So a defending player impeding the progress of an attacking player without any contact being made (that would normally result in an indirect free kick) in the defending team's penalty area would result in a penalty.

However, it seems that (at least for this season) the law is that it's a penalty kick only for fouls that would result in a direct free kick anywhere else, which would mean that impeding a player isn't one of those that would result in a penalty.

ah right

I don't like the penalty laws in general but accept without getting into severity, direction of attack etc it gets complicated.

I can't stand an attacker running away from goal on the edge of the box out to the corner shielding the ball trying to feel a touch to go down like a sack of spuds and get a pen, which is 75% likely to be a goal. It's not a reward in line with the play occurring, feels totally out of whack.

In this match that handball was totally accidental but almost gave Croatia a goal, totally undeserved.

It creates talking points and drama but doesn't feel like sporting merit or superiority always comes into play.

@Gotters They've definitely modified the law over the years, see Wikipedia:

Quote

Since 1903, the offences for which a penalty kick is awarded within the defending team's penalty area have been identical to those for which a direct free kick is awarded outside the defending team's penalty area. These consisted of handball (excluding technical handling offences by the goalkeeper), and foul play, with the following exceptions (which were punished instead by an indirect free kick in the penalty area):

  • Dangerous play (since 1903)
  • Obstructing / impeding the progress of an opponent (1951–2016) and impeding an opponent without contact (from 2016)
  • Charging when not attempting to play the ball (1948-1997)

That's been the case as long as I remember. You occasionally see indirect free kicks inside the box, such as when a keeper collects a back pass, and the entire defence end up on the goal line trying to block the inevitable shot that follows.

I don't understand why Belgium are playing for the goalless draw.

I think they're just too inept to do anything about it. Aside from making that foul in the box, Carrasco was also rubbish at the other end of the pitch, seems like i watch so many games where there's one player who is determined to be selfish but can't shoot, and seems to take moments in the final third as though their team will get loads more in the course of the match. Carrasco got the ball and instead of passing to the available De Bruyne who i think would have scored, instead shot from a tight angle with a player and the keeper stood in the way, as though it'd squeeze through, him just wanting to take a shot because he was in the mood. Could have been one goal up, moments later were nearly one goal down.

I guess I'm looking at it from what is being incentivised, if the laws are too wide in what pens get given for then you encourage the attempted winning of a penalty over attempting a shot or attacking play as teams are playing the odds far more now with data so prevalent.

Tell how exciting the game is with all this laws chat. Belgium look shot, like watching Ali or Holmes get wheeled out well past their prime for a payday.

Lukaku'd! That is almost a Ronnie Rosenthal class miss! It's like he's playing for Chelsea again.

In other news are wonderful, technical, such a good team Croatia going to bore their way through more games to snatch a win at the end?

I don't see the hype.

I'm also aware this if often England, without the Modric.

Oh yes I actually remember this, actual indirect free kicks inside the box.  I'm sure this has happened recently (in the last few years) too, in fact it was in the Spanish League last year or the year before?
