There's no buzz around this tournament, and whilst I want to say for the majority it's because of the whole Qatar thing, I think it's more likely because of the non-standard timing and proximity to Christmas.

 

I admit that I am probably going to watch it in the background whilst I work - after all, I watched 2018 and its not as if Russia are massively better in a lot of ways. Plus, this year has been pretty awful for me so this will be a distraction I welcome.

 

Not that I think a lack of viewers would matter anyway even if there was a massive boycott, because all those TV rights were signed ages ago so Fifa has got its cash and won't care (and they won't cry if advertisers moan about lack of audiences). I do admire people who aren't watching on principle though.

Sorry you’ve had a shit year, hopefully there will be some escapism in the next few weeks, no matter how weird the tournament itself is.

 

Feel much the same about buzz. Put a wallchart up but haven’t even looked at it again. Normally I’d have mapped out routes to the final, made predictions, done a fantasy side but really just going through the motions. The group games will likely be on in the background, maybe interest will pick up by the knockouts, we’ll see.

Put me in the won’t watch camp. Completely toxic tournament, I’ll donate to a relevant organisation to support migrant workers and ignore the whole fucking circus. 
 

Which makes me sad, I LOVE the World Cup. The first two weeks of group matches is always brilliant, hopefully the ‘26 will be a stormer to make up for it.

We're all being very cynical, but I'm sure that hosting the World Cup will open up Qatar, and help bring them closer into line with the values of the rest of the world, just like what happened with Russia, who pulled back from all the post-cold war aggression, backwards attitudes and laws, and outdated expansionist policies.

 

It's not as if Qatar have already disrupted the organisation of the competition by going back on a promise regarding the sale of alcohol, causing problems with one of the tournament's biggest sponsors. It's not as if they've already started harassing journalists or threatend to destroy a camera belonging to Danish TV. It's not as if they've started gearing up towards arresting people for wearing shorts or women for wearing any of the clothes they might have taken to an extremely hot country...

Interesting Gary Neville countdown to the world cup doc on sky sports now.

 

Of course you can shout ‘shill’ at him as much as you like whenever he’s impressed with anything he sees but it’s an interesting watch, though his claims of total editorial independence at the start and access all areas are called into very easy question with him taking the money off them during the tournament.

Read that this World Cup will have automated offside VAR decisions. I’m a sure that will work flawlessly.

 

Looking forward to refereeing shenanigans in the opener; almost hope there is such a scandal, just to keep throwing enough shit at this farce as possible.
