Can't happen to a nice bunch of bribe taking twats, imagine Budweiser got quite a case lining up here against FIFA. It's not just what they pay as title sponsors but the spending they've lined up for global promotion.

This is a variant on the old joke that the real business negotiation only starts in China once you've signed the contract.

No beer at football doesn't even register on the list of issues.

It doesn’t, but if they are willing to u-turn on beer 2 days before the first game then what else will they decide they aren’t now willing to tolerate during the tournament?

True. I'd have been very concerned for any gay fans braving the trip even before this.

I dunno if the Bud thing is THAT big of a deal. They're in it for the logo being slapped on everything you see on TV, the stadium sales aren't nothing but they can probably get some money back on that and it's not the main reason they're there. What was the tweet anyway, seems to have been deleted!

Surely the beer thing isn’t a U-turn but always the plan. However, I do find it a rare bright spot in this whole shitshow.

Basically Fuck Qatar, Fuck FIFA and Fuck Budweiser and every other brand supporting this cursed tournament. I expect the whole thing will be a very deserving catastrophe.

Beer might end up banned after all. A few days ago, Qatar told Budweiser to move the stalls somewhere less visible. And now The Times is reporting that Qatar is pressuring FIFA to get rid of beer completely.

But we were told the World Cup will help to change Qatar into a more open and inclusive nation. Not much evidence of that so far.

Banned at stadiums, apart from in corporate hospitality boxes.

Alcohol was banned in the stadiums at Brazil 2014 but the FIFA forced the government to pass a bill to override it.

Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff has signed into law a bill that in principle allows the sale of beer during 2014 World Cup matches.

Football's world governing body, Fifa, had demanded a change in Brazilian legislation banning alcohol at football matches.

The new bill, setting a number of rules for the World Cup, does not mention any restriction on the sale of alcohol.

Correspondents say state governors may still ban beer sales during the event.

Beer sales have been illegal at football matches in Brazil since 2003.

The ban was introduced as part of measures to tackle violence among rival fans and hooliganism.

Earlier this year Fifa's General Secretary, Jerome Valcke, made it clear that the right to sell beer must be enshrined in legislation on the World Cup in the Brazilian Congress.

Qatar is so rich FIFA cannot push them around in the same way.

It’s kind of sad that the restriction of selling (shite, £12-a-pop) alcohol has seemingly gained more traction than far bigger issues heading into the tournament, but here we are.

Restricting the sale two days before the tournament is a massive fuck you flex by the Qataris, and just underlines that they’re running this show, not FIFA in any way shape or form. Apologies for sounding glib, but brings to mind Darth Vader warning Lando to pray he doesn’t alter their deal any further.
