Who are favourites?

I can't really look beyond France but have a sneaking suspicion either Brazil or Argentina will win it.  It's going to be Messi's last tournament and they've not lost in something ridiculous like 30+ games.  England won't win it, the squad just looks a bit mediocre.

Brazil are favourites.

Then Argentina or France depending on where you look.

If Brazil didn't have Neymar then I'd be able to get behind them. He's just too annoying. I'd like to see Messi win it and Ronaldo go crashing out early.

I've got Polish heritage so be nice to see them do well but it's unlikely.

My Spurs bias also means I want to see Bale have a good tournament.

Argentina and Brazil both have much better squads this time than they have done for the past few tournaments.  I fancy one of those to win it, maybe France at a push as even with their injuries, they have annoyingly good strength in depth.

England?  TBH I'd be delighted if we reach the semis but fear an exit in the quarters.

Unlike most World Cups, I really don't think there's a firm favourite this time - which can only be a good thing.

One thing which is GUARANTEED which always fucks me off is the CONSTANT England coverage during games which have nothing whatsoever to do with England.  Drives me up the fucking wall - 'now the latest from the England camp before we even consider talking about the game we're just about to watch/have just watched/are in the middle of watching'.  Aaaargh!!!

It wouldn't be so bad if they actually had any news. Instead it's usually just someone stood outside the hotel making wild guesses. I wonder if other countries coverage is like this?

Group D is an interesting one, because it's obviously not beyond the realms of possibility that Denmark top it ahead of France, meaning France would probably meet Argentina in the first knockout round, and one of the three favourites would be going out relatively early.

Mind you, the holders never even made it out of the group stage in 2002, 2010, 2014 and 2018, so I suppose an early French exit shouldn't be all that surprising.

The title was last retained in 1962 too, so don’t fancy France’s chances much. They should have walked the last Euros with their squad, but looked pretty disjointed given they were reigning world champions.

Think Holland might be worth a punt. They should get through group A relatively untroubled, and face the runner-up in England’s group in the last-16. That might well be England though, which would be an entertaining start to the knockout stages.

Obviously my post will all be moot by this time next week when Senegal have battered the Dutch and Iran has earned a famous win over the English.

Qatari security threaten to destroy Danish TV crew's camera for filming a report. How is this nasty little shithole going to handle the world's media and all of those fans with their cameras? It's not too late to cancel the this shameful circus.

Erm... Yum yum?

So that and a pint of shit beer for £20 if you're daft enough to actually attend the tournament.

Myself and the two guys I'm heading over there with have managed to get ourselves a number of crates ordered in to our apartment for the two weeks while we're over there for precisely this! Not really considered food...

I did have to laugh yesterday when Danny Murphy was asked on TalkSport if he’d have taken the offer of Beckham’s £10m. “100%”. Nice for Qatar to know they can fall back on that dour prick who couldn’t book a supermarket opening should it come to it.

I like Danny Murphy.  He's honest and talks a fair bit of sense.  He's not an exciting sounding pundit for sure.

Do you think?  What's he bitter about?  I tend to listen to him on talksport rather than MOTD but when asked he gives an honest opinion and doesn't just phone it in like lots do.  I do like when he talks about previous managers he played under as well and what it was like in the dressing room.

He's one of those pundits whose punditry makes a funeral service look upbeat. Danny you are being paid to talk about football - at least make it sound fun. Same applies to Lee Dixon. Awful.

The benchmark is Ally McCoist - a man who sounds like he can't believe his luck that he gets to do the job.

I've said this before but I'll say it again - I don't get the love for McCoist, particularly his need to repeat his co-commentator's name nearly every sentence.

Sadio Mane confirmed out of the World Cup now.   It's gonna be interesting seeing how players hold up, we've had a ton of high profile withdrawals before the squads were announced but I suspect the number of players who are there carrying knocks is off the charts, especially the guys who play in European leagues.

Backing Ecuador to squeeze through that group now.

Beer might end up banned after all. A few days ago, Qatar told Budweiser to move the stalls somewhere less visible. And now The Times is reporting that Qatar is pressuring FIFA to get rid of beer completely.

But we were told the World Cup will help to change Qatar into a more open and inclusive nation. Not much evidence of that so far.
