World Cup Qatar 2022 - Desert Strike

All this talk of rubbish commentators reminds me of one of my few ‘I was near a famous person’ stories. I’d been in London for a day or two and had hopped on my usual train back up to the midlands. There I was, reading my Autosport and sipping my coffee, when an awfully familiar voice rang out from the chair in front of me. Who else could it be but our lord and saviour

I always relentlessly mocked his commentary on the FIFA games and would make clear my disdain to anyone within earshot when he was co-commentator on any game I was watching on telly.

Anyway, it was a quiet train and I couldn’t help but overhear the phone conversation he was having. Dunno who it was to or quite what about, but I ended up feeling bad for the years of anti-Townsend propaganda as he sounded like a really lovely bloke, repeatedly telling whomever it was on the other end not to worry and that be delighted to help in any way he could.

This all lasted as far as my usual destination of Banbury. Had a cursory glance as I disembarked and sure enough, it was definitely him.

I did have to summon insane amounts of self-control not to turn around and say ‘You’re right there, Clive!’ as I walked past, mind.

I hated Townsend as a commentator too.

It's really annoying when you meet someone you thought you hated but they turn out to be really nice.  I met Neil Warnock about 15 years ago - couldn't abide the bloke before that, but he's such a top bloke, was really funny, incredibly down to earth and pleasant.

Really pissed on my chips.

At least with James Corden you know he'll be an utter shit.

I bumped into Tony Pulis once when his West Brom team were stopping at the same hotel we were. He was a really nice bloke which kind of makes me hope he didn't hear what I'd shouted at him whenever he bought whatever team of cloggers he was currently managing to the Arsenal.

Anyway, I'll always defend Towsend when he gets bought up as I think he has a really unique ability to judge the way the metronome of a game is swinging. Sure, he's got his stock phrases but I think he's a fine co-commentator and am always pleased when he pops up on the radio or some dodgy stream.

I don't mind Townsend either, he picked up a lot of scorn and ridicule when ITV got the footy highlights for a while and sat him in his 'tactics truck' - if anything some of what he was trying to do then was just a bit  ahead of the times as we were still in the era of proper football men calling for more running about in the second half, the fancy schmancy nerds with their stupid laptops, data & xG hadn't ruined the game back then.

I'd agree with that. I think he was doomed by association with The Premiership as that was just an awful show. From memory Match of the Day was very highlights focussed then – didn't they even just crank through the last few games one after the next with a brief summation at the end? – and ITV by comparison filled every inch of it with anything but just showing the matches. He still gets work though which is decent longevity in his field.

"Kick off is just under half an hour away.......

So let's waste more airtime talking about England and Wales who aren't in this group, who aren't playing today, and who we covered more than once yesterday (when they also weren't playing or in either of the groups featured)."

Andy Townsend is fine and honestly the dreadful array of uninformed ex pros BT Sport wheel out for their Champions League coverage it makes me miss his double act with Clive Tyldesley.

One team playing in red so Hartson is on co comms.

Today is the first real challenge of the tournament - 3 matches on ITV.

A real duffer so far to start, too.

Waiting to find out the commentary team is like some form of Russian Roulette, but there's only 1 empty chamber.

No doubt they'll wheel out Clive for one of the next two games.

Picked a good day to be in the office. Although do fancy Japan to spring a surprise this afternoon (get your money on Germany then 'Mukkers!)

Will race home for the novelty of Canada in a major tournament. From (rubbish) memory, their '86 Mexico sticker page was a collection of magnificent rugged beards.

I'm assuming Clive will get one and Matterface the other. What a treat!

Good to see ally mccoist has so much to say about the above.

'ok'

Hahah I thought the exact same!

Also when he said "Japan can be all over you like a rash" was just so inspired.

Roy Keane is right. Harry kane should walk out of the next game with a yellow card, who gives a fuck.

No way FIFA are gonna yellow card every single captain, every game.

Leadership is about taking action, not hiding like a coward.

Why are you giving Keane any credit, I said that on Sunday (and again on Monday) :quote:
