I'm glad this tournament is done now as I'm well and truly footballed-out. No enthusiasm at all for the return of the Premier League, I wonder if anybody else feels the same in any significant numbers?

Despite some initial enthusiasm, in the end I didn’t watch a single game in its entirety during the World Cup. England France came closest but had to help the better half with bringing some shopping indoors and missed whoever scored France’s winner (Pires?)

The whole tournament will feel like a weird fever dream within a few weeks, if not sooner.

There will be a brief moment of 'meh the PL is back' whilst contemplating transfers for FPL this week and mocking the carling cup then everybody will be delighted to have it back cos what else would you watch over xmas & new year on tv if not football.

I suspect you are probably right.

For me, I really have lost interest this season. Not watched a single PL, CL or highlights program so far and don't see that changing over Christmas.

I did watch nearly every game in the World Cup, but as I said a couple of times during the tournament, it was a lot of pretty low-quality football but some amazing drama, especially in all of the last group games.

World's Strongest Man, obviously.

L'Equipe, though, has taken great issue with the Pole's performance. Their editor-in-chief wrote: “The Pole Szymon Marciniak, experienced Champions’ League referee, did not rise to the occasion, even less so to his job. The penalty awarded on Angel Di Maria was very soft, not too different to the one refused on Marcus Thuram.

"How did Cristian Romero, responsible for so many brutal fouls, finish the match without a yellow card? How did Mr Marciniak not book the Argentinians when they chopped down counter-attacks through any means necessary, shirt pulls, cynical fouls and bangs? How was Emiliano Martinez able to grab the ball, during the penalty shootout, and throw it far away from [Aurelien] Tchouameni without the official intervening?”

Oh so complaining about penalties not being given and someone hacking down your players?

I think he's poured too much salt on his irony pie.

I’m sorry, what?!

Yeah, this year’s event happened at the end of May. Think it’s long been the case that there’s a huge delay, but it’s a Christmas TV tradition so remains a staple for 5 this time of year.

Surprised it hasn’t just shifted to being live over Christmas but guess the strongman calendar doesn’t really allow it.

Yep. The World’s Strongest Man has always been contested in late spring/early summer and broadcast on British television at Christmas.  It didn’t really matter when Geoff Capes and Jon Pall Sigmarsson were household names as you couldn’t just read a synopsis of the competition on Wikipedia, and by the time you could the Christmas broadcast thing had became tradition and nobody wants to change it.  Fans of Football Weekly or The Totally Football show have long had to put up with AC Jimbo disappearing for a couple of weeks at the business end of the season to record the strongman show.
