I did one swap, my second, where neither letter was correct. And yet somehow still got the 5. I thought you always had to be getting at least one right to be in with a chance, so I got very lucky indeed.

I've had it at least once before.

I've never gone back and explored why it works out but my best guess is that the move surreptitiously set up a double green swap that didn't exist before, or perhaps even two. 

 

Many repeated letters, as @Commander Jameson suggests, may also play a part. You're more likely to set up such a double green in that case.

Awkward one at the start, but I made a guess which paid off, and after that it was mostly straightforward.
