It's not a spoiler to say that it looked like an easy one, given that it begins with two words starting with Q (neither of which could be "Qatar")!

So it's surprising that I ended up getting only one star on it. I know that I wasted one move...

Spoiler

guessing "hitch" instead of "hatch"

... but I'm not sure where else I wasted moves that could have been solved more efficiently.

I got the same missed guess and ended up with four stars. It’s  all about the sequence of your moves isn't it? Do even one in the wrong order and it can  significantly affect your final result. Spotting that sequence is the part that usually catches me out.

One bad guess can really fuck with your score, especially if you're moving one of a number of possible letters which you shouldn't be doing unless utterly unavoidable.

But I don't think there's as much sequencing in effect. If there's only, say, one X and one P and you know where they go, it doesn't matter what order you move them.

I think there is a little more to it, ie planning moves a couple ahead. Where I've had success is by looking at trios of letters so the first move gets one green but then the next move gets me two. I'm finding it hard to explain but a bit of slower play and forward planning has got me 5 stars for a few days in a row now.

I had that approach for a good long while, but was still getting too many 4s for my liking. Using it, it's still possible to choose the wrong one of two identical letters to move, because any of the three letters in play in that case may have been ripe for an immediate two-green switch that you haven't been able to see yet. It also makes you unhelpfully think that letters in yellow squares are worth keeping as such for a later swap.

But absolutely, forward planning is key. Seeing a possible word is one thing, seeing that it supports other adjacent words greatly increases the chance that it's the right move.

I find there are often a couple of double swaps at the start that are maybe the hardest to spot (sometimes you need to move a correct letter out of a word, because it's in a double swap now in a different word, and then move a different copy of it back in later). I made notes about my moves today (not very good ones, so may be a bit jumbled):

Spoiler

1) I swapped with R (fromTRILL TO PRISM) - double swap

2)U swapped with M  (I guess LUMPY and PRISM) - double swap

3) M swapped with O  (IDIOM and LUMPY) - single swap

4) P swapped with S (PRISM and COMFY) - single swap

5) P swapped with F (PRISM and COMFY) - single swap

6) O swapped with F (COMFY complete) - double swap - this was what I was working towards for the last few moves

7)  P swapped with R (TRILL and PRISM) - single swap

8 ) D swapped with O  (IDIOM DONE)  - double swap - again, worked towards

9) L Swapped with O (DONE) - double swap, obvs.
