What turned out to be pure hype?

It was badly marketed and even branded (if you go back and look at all the press and marketing, Sega dropped "Sega" from the naming. All the previous consoles were the "SEGA something™", this was just Dreamcast).

Other ways they deprioritised "Sega" in favour of "Dreamcast" include sticking the company logo on the front of the console rather than the top (and at about the same size as the "Designed for/Compatible with Windows CE" text), and putting it on the Arsenal away strip but not the home shirt.

I remember eagerly awaiting Twilight Princess for the longest time and then being dismayed when I discovered that it was shit

With you on this, it was Nintendo giving in to the fans and giving us a brown dull Zelda game. Always hyped for a Zelda, this one was like a gut punch when I played it

is that what people wanted? Following the bright and sparkling world of Windwaker? WW cured my seasonal depression when I played it I swear

my only wish for wind waker was that they finished it, i know the gamecube was in a bit of a mess and they were struggling with a lot of development but it could've really done with a few more months in the oven

It was what the shouty ones wanted. Nintendo showed a more 'realistic' demo of Zelda then went with the 'kiddie' WW look which really got keyboard warriors upset.

I only played the HD version of Twilight Princess on Wiiu. I loved it, I think it is a brilliant game.

I'm hoping they bring it out on Switch so I can try it again. I think after WW it just seemed so drab, but I might enjoy it more with a fresh run

As a game it’s way better than Wind Waker, but a lot of people seemed to write it off based on its graphical style.

To be fair I think Skyward Sword is brilliant as well but despite trying it numerous times I bounced right off Breath of the wild, simply did not enjoy it.

@Fry CrayolaAnd it's also a brilliant addition to the PS2's library,* irrespective of it being a Dreamcast game by design — it just makes it a tricky game to use to demonstrate the PS2's superiority to said machine!

*albeit I preferred the DC version as it looked incredible on my VGA monitor at a whopping 640x480

@Plissken Your mention of Crackdown reminded me of APB. PartridgeShrug me all you like, but Crackdown got people interested in Realtime Worlds’ next project, and it was going to be this insanely ambitious cops and robbers live service MMO thing.

I feel like in reality it just ate loads of money whilst in development limbo and then snuck out like a quiet fart without anyone noticing.

I still bought a copy though

Does NURBS count for this topic?

I think it was around the PS2s release but there was a big discussion, or at least it got featured in magazines regularly, about what was going to replace polygons as the fundamental building block of 3D in games because we were reaching a point where there'd be more polygons on screen than pixels.

Wow, I didn't even realise that actually got released.

Then that actually makes a classic erroneous assumption: how much you choose to critique something isn't necessarily proportional to how much you enjoy it.

I think a lot of people avoid these kinds of discussions because they assume criticism means "taking about why something is bad".

But that's because people don't generally seem to understand what the word actually means in that context. It's certainly very rare online.

Criticism is just as much a way to explore more deeply things you love as well as dislike.

This is such a good post and needs to be printed out so that everybody is forced to read it before saying anything about the idea of criticism. I get this a lot as I teach students about the difference between reviewing, appreciating, and critiquing a text. It's partly why I often suggest students pick a text that isn't necessarily their favourite as they struggle to separate the popular understanding of the term with the academic/correct one.

I remember Anita Sarkeesian having something similar at the start of every Feminist Frequency videos bit obviously the use of words was too much for the Gamergate chuds to understand.

Rez 🥰 Easily 1 of the best games on the system.

Yes I agree but in the context of why the PS2 killed the Dreamcast, it's a funny choice to pick a Sega title that is so closely linked to the  Dreamcast. Although I will admit it was better on PS2.

Yeah, it's very brown, but it's fun and finished. Wind Waker very obviously isn't complete. I'd say Wind Waker is the worst 3D Zelda.

Things that were all hype? Killzone. Sold as a Halo killer, has literally none of the things I liked in Halo.

Zool

Feel like this character was touted as the computer version of Mario or Sonic, and he really, really wasn’t.

I was 10 years old and I could have told you that.  It was night and day playing Mario or Sonic to then Zool.

The Super Scope and the Menacer.

Nintendo's NES Zapper and the Sega Light Phaser were both pretty neat peripherals. They worked well and were fairly lightweight and easy to store.

The 16 bit versions were monstrosities. Totally overcomplicated and fucking massive. Even though games for the 8 bit guns were quite limited, there were still some decent titles. There was practically no reason to own a Super Scope or a Menacer though.

Overwatch 2.

Calling this a sequel is a joke. It's an utter disgrace of a game where they basically took all your overwatch one stuff and charged you ten pounds for each individual item to get it back. It's literally overwatch v1.1.

I imagine in years to come they will look at this as the worst sequel of all time and a pure bloated cash cow of a game.

Motion controls. It’s been 15 years and there’s about 10 games you control by waving your arms about like a twat that are actually decent.

I don't agree. They make FPS much better for one, so there's lots of great games with motion controls

The other thing is that they work best with VR, which has yet to take off.

PS2 version runs at ~60fps, compared to the ~30fps of the DC original
