Capcom have a major issue here because they're capitalising on the (well deserved) success of the remakes they already did. Like they did Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3 for the PlayStation 1, then time and tech moved on. After making the Re1 remaster for GameCube then upscaling it to PS4 you have a final version, a definitive take on Re1.

For the 2 and 3 remakes they started from the ground up and made entirely new games with the originals being a template. Same characters, stories and locations, but entirely new gameplay and presentation.

So now, Capcom are trying to capitalize on the success of 2 and 3s remakes by remaking 4.  And the big elephant in the room is that Resi4 is still brilliant.  If RE4 had never existed and was released today it would stand up, especially as it's all 60fps HD since the PS4 version came out. So Capcom can't make a revolutionary remaster like 2 and 3, they have to do an improvement like they did with 1. Same game but better.  But it's going to be hard to make it better because it's already one of the best games of all time.

It's not a bad thing - but it surely can't be a major reimagining like 2 and 3 were, it will be a remaster. You'll be blown away by the graphics and the improvements but once you leave the first village you'll be feeling like you've already played this before.  Like when you first watch a movie in 4K and after ten minutes the resolution is forgotten and you're just watching a movie.

The gameplay will feel totally different, owing to updated modern controls and being able to strafe and walk while aiming etc. OG’s feel was largely based on committing to staying still and aiming while under pressure. That whole fight or flight decision making was pretty much The Game, when you break it all down.

I know we all enjoy and appreciate that, and are able to eventually re-adapt back to the old controls whenever we revisit the game, because we understand that it’s worth investing the effort, but I doubt folk who weren’t there at the time are able to do similar.

I bought the physical disc cheap on PS4 for my brother in law’s Christmas one year and no danger he ever managed to play beyond setting the dog free because of the controls. He’s 10 years younger than me, while there are also folk 10 years younger than him who are legally old enough to play RE4 but are unlikely to ever do so.

Like it or not, it’s showing it’s age. (It’s still in my top 5 though).

A game could offer up free blow-jobs and still you’d have numerous negative complaint-takes on rllmuk.

I didnt think I was being negative.  My first joke post begins by being critical then changes midway to be shut up and take my money.  The post today isn't meant to be a negative, I'm just questioning how revolutionary a remaster it can be when the original still holds up, especially since it's already been remastered and HD upscaled on PC and console.  I can't wait for this remake, don't get me wrong.

That's absolutely spot on, and it's a great example of what I'm referring to.  The Quest VR version is a really incredible experience and worth the price of the headset alone, but in exchange for the wow factor of VR you do have to accept that being able to run and shoot at the same time makes the game very very easy.  Many of the bosses go down in no time at all because you can just run around behind them.

Adding modern controls could really add or detract from the experience, it depends on what choices are made by the developers creating the overall package.

It’ll feel similar to REmakes 2&3, the badguys’ shambolic motion and erratic movement will lead to all sorts of wasted shots and agonising misses that will ramp up the tension.

I replayed both remakes this week in a back and forth chronological machete order and the instances when you’ve got swarms of guys on you still feel pretty tense. As we know from RE4 and also seeing the remake gameplay, that whole crowd management aspect is a major thing the player has to contend with. It’s going to be brilliant even with the modern controls. Can’t wait.

I have no idea where Capcom go with the Resi remakes from here though. Maybe this will be their last hurrah for another 15 years until they decide to remake 7 or something.

How they would approach a remake of 5, I wonder. It's massively problematic and full of racist tropes that caused a fuss in 2008 but would cause a much much bigger fuss now. A white blonde woman being dragged into a house by an evil looking black dude and the door slamming shut... some of the imagery in the game is just gross. Whole later chapters featuring the tribal enemies would have to be entirely reimagined.

It might be worth their while to completely overhaul the whole thing as it is still the best selling Resi game ever, I believe. But it's fraught with potential pitfalls.

6 I don't think is worth their while remaking at all. It's widely loathed and it's 400 hours long. It would cost a fortune for something the fanbase largely hates and which basically put the future of the franchise in jeopardy and forced a back to basics approach upon Capcom.

I quite like 6 these days, but you have to think of it as a weird spinoff, a completely mad, bloated game from the era where Japanese developers were desperately trying to copy the western style without understanding it and throwing in everything they could think of.

As for future remakes. Dino Crisis please.

One thing RE2R does well is that if you do stand still the crosshair tightens, leading to easier hitstun and critical hits. I only realised this when doing the 30 bullet challenge in the Sheriff's bonus game, it's not made obvious to players. It's a very clever tradeoff of being able to move and shoot, and standing your ground for extra damage / etc.

Also So glad they've kept the feel of the original game and the never-gets-old absurdity of kneecapping an old maid and roundhousing her into next week while dishing out one liners. Did feel sorry for the cow though 🤣 After Threemake left me cold, this footage definetely looks a much more true to the source material as well as being more tailored to action RE. Chainsaw Parry looked amazing. I'm sure the island will be there, I don't remember any pre-release footage of that when the original game came out.

Honestly remakes of Silent Hill 2 and Resident Evil 4 feels like Christmas. Two very special games for me.

I used to work for Gamestation back in the day and this blonde stunner came in once and asked me which is better, Silent Hill 2 or Resident Evil 4? I told her why not both? It's like trying to pick a favourite child. She added me on myspace and we got to talking. We've been together for 17 years now.

Thanks Japanese horror games 👍

5 and 6 are also good. Maybe even great in spots. The world design does let them down - dark and dreary, and not enough pithy one liners to liven things up (in the Japanese version of 4 Leon was also completely humourless) but they have their own strengths. 5 has the boulder punching, co-op and some great shotgun effects and 6 has the best Mercs mode in the series. The core combat is actually pretty top tier, it's just the absurd blender of nonsense such as QTE overload and consistently terrible writing that lets the whole game down as a whole. Oh, and the fact it originally ran at about 15 fps.

Basically, what I'm saying is bring back Sheva. Her throat slitting antics are an absolute delight.

I often wonder if one of the major reasons why I love the shite out of this series is because I’ve never played 5 or 6?

It’s kind of like loving the Alien and Terminator movie franchises. I just watched the good ones.

Genuinely love 5, but I couldn't finish Leon's campaign in 6 and that's supposed to be the best one. Petty complaints but for me the characters never looked quite right, and the inventory system I just can't get used to at all.

6 is all about Mercs. Shame there's the time limit, just playing it is fun.

Resident Evil 5 allows you to request eggs from your co-op partner, which is worth the price of entry alone.

5 is actually not a bad game if you focus purely on the gameplay. The level design and set pieces are not a patch on 4 but then what is? It's just very very problematic in its imagery and the dodgy historical racial tropes it deploys. It feels like one of those things you just couldn't get away with nowadays, especially not with far more detailed graphics and life-like animation. It was only 14 years ago but that's a lifetime when it comes to changes in social attitudes.

And of course things now spread like wildfire on social media in a way they didn't back then. I think a remake would really be treading on eggshells and much as I like modern Capcom I'm still not sure they'd have the sensitivity to pull it off in a way that didn't still feel a bit racist.

5 and 6 are both absolutely incredible, but they did stylistically move on a bit after 4. It’s a sign of the times, as RE5 is best played in coop, and there it truly shines. It’s was built with coop in mind from the ground up.

RE6 is everything amped up and by far the most stupid of them all, but it’s mechanically a brilliant step up from RE5, and once again a coop game at heart.

Both of these games are excellent if you play them as intended and enjoy the cheese.
