This looks potentially incredible. A balance of reverence and new elements I was uncertain they would be able to pull off.

Interesting that there didn't appear to be anything from the Island in that trailer but I'm not reading too much into that just yet.

Looks bad to me. It looks really slow and ponderous, like they've seen a really fast action game and decided it needs to be a cinematic wade-around-in-sludge adventure with stealth elements. It also looks so dark you'll never be able to play in the daytime.

Did you watch the right video?

RE4 is likely my favourite game, with constant repeat play-throughs so I know the whole thing very well. And the idea that the Island is the "weakest part" maybe me want to explode in disagreement. It's the actual best and most ridiculous part of the game where everything gets turned up to 11.

It's the part that elevates it above the rest of the series.

It's like saying Commando gets boring when John Matrix raids the mansion! 😂

The trailer looks incredible, although I'd have no idea how they'd remake the entire original. I really, really want them to because the pacing and ramp up is the core to the game. Playing it thinking "what's next?!" Even though, I've played it over and over so it's not a surprise to me I'd still like to see that beautiful rollercoaster preserved.

How the hell are they going to remake all the incredible set peices? Pls don't be compromised but cutting stuff! 🙏

I should clarify when I say "weakest part" it's like saying Superman's little finger is the weakest part of his hand. It might well be, but he's still going to kick your ass with it.

Amen! The Island is maybe my favourite part. I mean, it has the fucking Regenerators FFS!

The island is probably the least interesting environment of the original. But it maintains the pace perfectly so it doesn't really matter as you don't spend long enough there for it to drag.

I expect the later environments in this game to look completely different, much like RE2ake did a beautiful recreation of the police station but later areas were reimagined.

I'm curious how long it will be. The previous two remakes were pretty short and sweet, but I remember my first play if RE4 on the cube taking about 25 hours! I hope they don't condense anything down.

Hmm I dunno, it’s actually more faithful than I thought. That village layout is so identical I’m not sure I’d bother with a replay of the original this close to release.

Finally! Thank you.

It's the same game again. It seems to have more animated sequences thrown in, the chainsaw dude demolishing the building looked amazing, but it really does look like an enhanced version rather than a remake.  The gameplay looks exactly the same.  This is not a bad thing. In fact it's a very good thing.  Oh fuck this, take my money for the 8th* time you bastards!  Absolutely stoked for this.

I'm playing re4 at the moment, my main impression from the trailer is that it's slower and darker - like the other RE engine games. I'm a bit concerned that engine's not going to be a good for that generation of resident evil (4,5,mercenaries). Then again, that could just be the person playing the game to show it off rather than rushing and hammering through everything.

And in any case, if I don't like it I can still play the original.

No this is the worst take of the trailer so far

I think this looks great! It really seems to be quite faithful to the original from what they have shown do far but I can't imagine they will remake everything from the game considering its so big.

However I do not agree with the fact the dog is dead in the bear trap at the start of the game.

I knew it couldn't just be me, I was going to totally avoid any RE4 videos but had a look at the gameplay trailer. It certainly looks like the original, but there's something odd about it that I can't quite work out. Are they using the motion capture from the original game? Something about the way the enemies move in the glimpses we get of the village intro just seem...wrong somehow. It reminds me of RE5 is all I can think of but not in a good way. After just finishing RE8 I don't really know what I was expecting, not that it actually looks bad as such, just that it's as if they've randomly used old textures in really jarring close-ups and the characters have that exaggerated movement that you see in older games where capturing the face of the actors was far beyond what was realistic. I'm going to avoid any more as either way, it's RE4 ffs, but I don't think I've seen the RE Engine used in a way that makes it look outdated even. It's maybe a stylistic choice and I'll totally change my mind when actually playing it but after how much I enjoyed the action sequences in RE8 I was expecting that kind of realistic look. Perhaps that's what they mean when they emphasize how it's a different atmosphere, Capcom haven't made a massive bollocks of one of them yet (I really enjoyed the remakes despite how much was cut) so I'd be surprised if they'd decided to suddenly just not really bother.

The raindrops really stand out as out of place to me, but they're so heavily featured it's surely got to be a conscious design choice rather than, "Just use sprites if you have to, this needs to be released on more formats than the original"

Edit : Jesus IGN, do we really need a slow motion, close-up instant replay of a scene that you specifically said you found disturbing? Who the hell is this video even aimed at?!

Are there multiple videos going around? Like the other negative impression that doesn't sound anything like the one I watched. I didn't even see any raindrops 🤔

The story trailer does look better than the first video I watched which had more gameplay, IGN show much more of the village scene so I think they've maybe been supplied with video by Capcom and some sites are editing it in a way that doesn't really "get" what it looks like Capcom are trying to do with this remake. After watching more of the gameplay it definitely seems like these are all specific choices the developers have made, it does seem to have little bits of animation that change a scene from appearing almost photorealistic to 100% a video game which may well be exactly the intended effect if they really go full on mad with the horror stuff as the game goes on.

IGN also seem to have mistaken Leon standing a bit out of the way of an enemy as the game including "stealth"..

Capcom have a major issue here because they're capitalising on the (well deserved) success of the remakes they already did. Like they did Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3 for the PlayStation 1, then time and tech moved on. After making the Re1 remaster for GameCube then upscaling it to PS4 you have a final version, a definitive take on Re1.

For the 2 and 3 remakes they started from the ground up and made entirely new games with the originals being a template. Same characters, stories and locations, but entirely new gameplay and presentation.

So now, Capcom are trying to capitalize on the success of 2 and 3s remakes by remaking 4.  And the big elephant in the room is that Resi4 is still brilliant.  If RE4 had never existed and was released today it would stand up, especially as it's all 60fps HD since the PS4 version came out. So Capcom can't make a revolutionary remaster like 2 and 3, they have to do an improvement like they did with 1. Same game but better.  But it's going to be hard to make it better because it's already one of the best games of all time.

It's not a bad thing - but it surely can't be a major reimagining like 2 and 3 were, it will be a remaster. You'll be blown away by the graphics and the improvements but once you leave the first village you'll be feeling like you've already played this before.  Like when you first watch a movie in 4K and after ten minutes the resolution is forgotten and you're just watching a movie.

I think this is the one most of us are talking about, it looks fantastic.

I get that you mean “it’s the same again” as a positive, but I think there will be a lot of differences throughout. The first house encounter in the prologue plays out very differently according to preview accounts and there are now stealth mechanics with stealth kills. I’m sure there’ll be other differences as well.

I think I will try and fit in a replay of the original before release. Bought it for Steam Deck recently but only played to just beyond the village rammy. Left it in the first area with blue medallions (which may even be the very next area after the village).

I last played it (PS4) all the way through in 2020, which was my first time since Gamecube! 😯

I think this is probably exactly why it doesn't look quite how I expected, I had no real idea how on earth they could remake it and have it look and play better when the original limited the player movement and interaction with enemies by design rather than it being a limitation of the hardware. It is quite striking when they cut between the original and the remake though, I'm maybe too soon after playing through RE8 to look at it objectively as mad as that sounds.

Remake is maybe the wrong word for it, Capcom should have gone with their Street Fighter naming scheme and called it Super Resident Evil 4 Ultimate Turbo Edition
