PlayStation 5 DualSense Edge Controller - It’s…expensive

Fine. I still doubt anyone will be using up the battery from full in one sitting. If you are… I suggest maybe having a think about things.

I don't think people worry about using the battery in one sitting - I think people worry that it's pretty likely they need to remember to charge after every sitting, or there will not be enough juice for their next one as well.

It's a controller with a battery life pretty close to a whole console (Switch).

Fortunately, this isn’t my first rechargeable device and I have remastered the ability to remember to charge things.

I don’t know how you’d get 6 hours out of a Switch unless you’re playing pong on 50% brightness.

Close in price too, in the Switch (Lite’s) favour. I remember when people thought the Switch pro controller was expensive.

My original pads from PS5 launch honestly last about 60/90mins now. It's ridiculous. I should disable haptics and only enable when there is a game that justifies them, which is about one game a year at most.

Is that at the point you get the notification to charge, where the empty battery symbol is flashing?

Mines seems to last another 90mins when this happens. I really believe they could adjust the point it tells you to charge, it feels like it kicks in when the controller still has 30-40% charge but the graphic says its empty.

My Edge also hasn't arrived, shipped but DPD haven’t received it. Like many others.

One can only imagine the delays in shipping are down to Sony ordering a fleet of electric delivery vans but specifying a smaller battery….. we all can see where this is going I’m sure!

As for the people who are satisfied with sun 6 hour battery life…. Never played destiny one assumes 😂

I have never had a low battery warning on my regular Dualsense in any gaming session, some of which were 4+ hours. I know because that’s my TV idle shutoff time.

However after using it to play exactly one game to completion (I used the DS4 for everything else) it started to drift on the camera stick.

The game was Elden Ring, and that was 500 hours, but still - ONE GAME. (edit - sorry forgot Astro Bot but that was just 12 hours).

Absolutely this was a choice they made to encourage more sales of controllers, so with my next one I’m going to go regular version and exchange it before the warranty runs out each time. Seems more sensible than buying the Edge and giving them 20 quid each time.

edit - also I just visited a large electronics store, there were none of these around to look at - not even a mention. There were lots of adverts and dated announcements for PSVR2 though, so it looks like that will be going to retail, in Japan at least.

Reading that link I just learned that the Edge controller has customizable analogue stick input curves.

Surely that is done via the software on the PS5? In which case why can’t it be done for all controllers? I would love to be able to adjust the input curve for the Hori flight stick (which identifies to games as a DS4 and therefore usually has input curves not suited for a big joystick).

The game is pretty much dead to me now mind you.

Charging a controller is actually something i am more used to since i enjoy long gaming sessions.

They might have chosen to do the curve calculation on the pad and therefore make it impossible on the normal pad. But that will still Sony's choice.

I felt the same when they announced it. That all the remap and programmable features sounded like simple gatekeeping of some settings to people who pay.

I for one look forward to the day different pages of settings on your console cost extra. Or maybe you could pay on use. 50p to change the language.

There is a lot being said regarding the ability to replace the analogue sticks. Mainly criticism.

One point i’d make, if you have ever had a scuf controller or even the Xbox Elite pads. They haven't been reliable. But worst of all they all shipped with a 90 or 180 day warranty. Yes not even 1 year warranty. (Microsoft has now put a 1 year on the series 2 pad)

My scuf analogue sticks wore down so fast, the paddles constantly breaking and had to be replaced. All out of my own pocket.

My Elite pads have been good except my series 2 the rubber cover on the trigger adjustment has came off leaving a really sharp plastic nub. It is now outwith warranty.

In 366 days (if Sony offers one year warranty) you could be out of pocket another £210 or have a paperweight if you get stick drift. I feel like the ability to replace is great but only after the warranty period.

None of which justifies the cost of entry mind you. The core Xbox Elite Series 2 is an absolute bargain in comparison.

If my teenager has an hour of FIFA after school the controller is always nearly dead when I pick it up. It has to be charged daily, it's utter shit.

You get 1 year in the UK by law, don’t you? 2 years when we were in the EU. I might be wrong.

Lol, I compare a controller to a whole console, and it's the whole console you think it's worth poking fun at while the controller is absolutely fine as you always remember to recharge it like a good little person.

Sony do a lot of things right, really, really right - but controller battery life is simply not one of them. It's shit, and it needs calling out as they seem to be trending downwards not upwards with it.

I'd love a PlayStation controller with longer life for sure, but I don't feel like it's often limited a session of gaming for me (and I've had a PS5 since launch, play it a lot, and play long sessions of Destiny with my friends regularly.) I think maybe twice in its lifespan I've had the battery low warning flash up during a gaming session. These suggestions that you can expect 60-90 mins from one seem way off from my experience - I think I'm never getting less than 5-6 hours out of a charge.

I don’t think remembering to charge rechargeable devices makes me a good person, little or otherwise.

You're right, you're a bad person - you're destroying the climate with your selfish devil-may-care energy use. I'm calling Greta. You brought this on yourself. Planet killer.

I'm not sure if anyone has made a claim against this as I was surprised also but if you have a look on their website it states 180 day warranty in the UK - IIRC it was only 90 days when I got mine for the PS4 back in 2015 ish.

Just as a cost comparison also I'm sure I paid £160 - whatever that is adjusted for inflation the Edge isn't too bad as it will definitely be better quality and has much more features.
