PlayStation 5 DualSense Edge Controller - It’s…expensive

I was looking at it, having remembered it was expensive, but owning a DualSense with some stick drift. Then I saw the actual price, rather than just a vague "expensive". It's like twice what I'd consider ever paying for a premium controller.

Yeah, the Edge costs about twice as much as I'm willing to pay. However, by the time it's available at a discount I'm hopeful third-parties will have stepped in with better stick replacements, like GuliKit have intimated:

If you're not familiar, they produce replacement analogues that use magnetic Hall effect sensors, as opposed to the standard potentiometer ones which will inevitably wear down. The DualSense Edge's modular bays mean those of us not comfortable with a soldering iron could easily swap the new sticks in.

£19 for one replacement stick from Sony.

Maintain your DualSense Edge™ wireless controller’s great performance with this replacement stick module. Aim and move with precision by swapping in fresh stick modules so you’re always playing with equipment that’s in great shape.

or maybe make a better stick to start with that doesn't turn to shit in a two hundred pound controller?

I don't really know if £20 is a fair price or not, but that was certainly something else that jumps out. Like, how many stick drifts are you fixing at £20 a pop for the £200 to make sense economically?

Just one.

Otherwise - assuming you’d want to keep using a Dual Sense Edge - you’d have to buy a brand new controller for £210’ again.

It works out cheaper after 6 replacement sticks, at which time you'd have paid £360 on 6 £60 replacement dual sense controllers, and only £330 on a £210 dual sense edge and 6 £20 replacement stick modules. Although in both cases I can't imagine you'd be very happy.

that's assuming you don't get any extra sticks with the Edge to start with. And that the replacement sticks don't end up rare as fuck like the PS4 paddle attachment.

Replacement stick modules as a selling point, really? A worse battery life than the dualsense (which isn't exactly known for having a long lasting battery in the first place) is unbelievable for the price. I think this thing is an absolute fucking ripoff and struggle to understand how anybody other than actual 'professional gamers' or diehard Sony fanboys could even consider a purchase. What's the appeal, am I missing something?

That would make total sense if you were insane you were only buying the dual sense edge for the replacement stick modules.

Assuming you’re not, you’d be buying one for the features it offers over the regular dual sense (back paddles, profiles, triggers, software etc). With that you get peace of mind knowing that if the sticks fail after a year, you can replace them for a fraction of the cost.

Of course it’s a selling point. I can understand that people might think the price is punchy but the ability to easily swap the part of the controller that’s most likely to fail instead of replacing the whole controller is clearly an obvious draw.

I have never had any issues with my DualSense which is maybe making me dismiss this but I can't help but see it from the perspective of 'you designed this thing incorrectly and expect me to pay 4x the price to get a controller that works... but if that absurdly expensive replacement fucks up you can pay EVEN MORE to get around a design flaw and replace the part'. Reeks of typical PS3/5 era Sony arrogance.

The stick modules are the same as the regular dualsense, which are the same tech as MS and Nintendo. You could call it a design flaw but it’s the same we’ve been using since PS2 or PS3 era more or less so the design flaw isn’t inherent to the new controller.

As much as I’d like Sony/MS/Nintendo to release sticks that don’t drift as standard I can’t see that happening for a long time so this is the next best option seeing as how I’ve had stick drift on all mof them at some point, including a rather pricey Xbox Elite controller.

Having removable sticks also means other firms will end up releasing their own so that could be interesting.

Or maybe we could just hope platform holders will start actually fixing their shit.

It's a bit crazy that we seem to have run into a world where people just accept that the pads we get with consoles can be useless so quickly. Against the backdrop of waste, regardless of cost, it's yet another thing these manufacturers are just loving. Easy money.

We could hope for a lot of things. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not happy about stick drift but for the time being this is as good as it gets and whilst in a perfect world it wouldn’t be a selling point, it unfortunately is.

You can already get controllers with better stick tech for 70 dollars!

I know. But I don’t think you’ll see Sony/MS/Nintendo updating to it this generation for obvious reasons.

As always, lots of negativity here.

I’m looking forward to mine. I think it’ll take my COD play to the next level and the customisation features sound superb.

Also, my launch PS5 pad is still doing great.

It’s not for me, I’d like one but only if I win the lottery. I’m wondering though, does it even fit on the charging stand for the regular controller?

Yes it does :)

Also, as for the battery life, if you’re a serious gamer buying 1 of these, you’d want to be running it wired anyway.

LMK when you achieve it without camping in a corner and by playing the objective 😁

I don't think I'll ever get tired of knowing that my quarter-century old Saturn and Dreamcast controllers will always have better stick tech than anything the clowns (platform holders) today can produce.

If only Sega had put a second stick on the DC pad, we could all be using them on modern consoles in all their drift free majesty!
