PlayStation 5 DualSense Edge Controller - It’s…expensive

I got a new Elite 2 Core off Amazon for £60 just last week. All the gubbins from my original Elite (which died within 3 months) fit, so that's kinda rad. 8bitDo Ultimate controller was £35 and has paddles. Lightweight and comfortable, wired by with a long cable. Attached to PC.

Eh, most premium controllers are generally a ripoff.  Scufs are eye wateringly expensive, having bought a few for a bud. He paid for them, of course.

Is this new one worth £210? Is it buggery, but some people will pay through the nose for the advantages it gives.

I couldn’t have given a toss about this when announced, but given the ubiquitous stick drift in recent times the prospect of having fully replaceable sticks is quite appealing. Even if it just makes them easier to clean. Although I imagine in another generation’s time when the controllers are mostly worn out and the replacements are most needed, Sony will have stopped selling them. It’ll be like trying to buy a screen protector for a PSP go.

How did you get one for £60?

Pricing error on Amazon.de that went live for about an hour or so, was posted on hotukdeals. Don't think it hit 100 degrees (and therefore showing up in the main 'hot' category I usually skim) before the error was fixed, but I have keyword alerts set up so it pinged me as soon as it was posted.

it isnt a massive surprise and this gen really is for the payers. The peripherals and addons cost are really steep as they know that only the hardcore are interested and they will pay it.

the days of an affordable VR addon or eye camera or plastic guitars or "hardcore" controllers is behind us I think.

Nice bargain there then.

Not sure thats true… a scuff for the PS4 costs the same as this does adjusted for inflation, Xbox Elite pad is cheaper than it was adjusted for inflation.

PSVR 2 @ £450 (hope and pray) is no dearer etc

People who use paddles in FPS are cheating. The games are designed so you have to awkwardly claw your fingers trying to jump and shoot at the same time. It should be the same for everybody.

Actually same principle for any fancy peripherals, fighting sticks, wheels, refresh rates (apart from for accessibility reasons).  Everyone should be using the same equipment for competitive games. If you’re good with a joycon on SF2, you are good.

What about people who claw hand the pad so are getting the same advantage as paddles - how you gonna police that!?

Is there a reason for the replaceable sticks other than to swap out broken ones?

I thought maybe it could allow peripheral specialists to manufacture sticks with different springs/tension? But then the sticks already have "tuneable sensitivity and dead zones"...

Are they different heights or something maybe, adjustable for preference? 🤷🏻‍♂️

They're already doing different stick caps. I think it's just "sticks aren't a warranty item, you can buy new ones rather than us replacing the controller"?

  • 2 months later...

I mean, it’s not untrue. You’d think a lot of people buying it for esports would want to use a wired connection anyway.

Still, aside from the marginally lower battery life the reviews that came out today have been very positive. I’m more looking forward to getting mine now.

Forgive the click-bait title -that this channel is known for- but this is all true. There’s a “version 2” of the DualSense that’s better across the board, better sticks, buttons everything!

I traded in my original two white DS controllers for two new ones (in the cool new colours) and they’re drastically better. They were also £40 in the sales.

Just like the DS4, I use two and swap them when the battery runs dry. Annoying but a necessary evil.

Point I’m making is you can get a much better DualShock than the launch ones without spending the big bucks on this thing.

Both mine say A but one went rogue within months. I actually took it apart and used isopropyl on the pots and it did indeed fix it, for about a week. Replaced it, again with another A.

Not disagreeing as regardless of tech's components it can go wrong. Glad I now have two working controllers and both are the newer revision. They can still develop drift, mind. Just less likely.

That’s got to be bollocks, my 2 don’t even have that same layout of text on the back (one came with the PS5, the other is a new black one from January of this year) and no numbers ending in either 1 or A.

The black one developed some stick drift about a month ago, which has temporarily gone away but will surely return. I’ve never used the other.
