Another thread inspired by fiddling around with the Steam Deck.

I've been going from memory and recalled some real old favourites I'm getting reacquainted with, be good to get a thread going with lots of recommendations for various machines.

Hexcite (GBC) - lovely game which involves placing different shapes into an area against your opponent with bonus points for wedging them into tight spaces snugly against played pieces and then forcing your oppo into being left with unplaceable shapes when the play area is filled in. timeless classic for me

Mario Vs Donkey Kong (GBA)

Denki Blocks (GBA) - don't recall this ever having much love at the time, which is a shame as its a lovely shape sliding & sticking together puzzler.

Super Bust-A-Move (PS2) - such a chill out relaxing game to play

It's Mr Pants (GBA) - Rare developed just before MS snapped them up IIRC

Sensitive (C64) was a fun one. Yellow blocks disappear shortly after you move onto them; get to the goal in one line whilst eliminating all of the yellow blocks. Some blocks let you move over them twice, some blocks only let you move in certain directions (see the grey blocks below), some blocks act as teleports, etc.

I had a rip-off of this kind of gameplay for my iPhone a while ago (Streak - F2P with ads) - but I'm sure there are clones everywhere.

Sensitive also appeared on the Commodore Format covertape but possibly shouldn't have..

Apparently there was a DSi ware western update to logic champ I’ve never even heard of, called Snapdots.

Know nothing of it or how much of the charm it retains. Can DSi ware run on an emu ?

This is brand new information!

Time to look.

Yeah, this is a wonderful game. The GBA has some really good ones.

Ignoring Tetris-style ‘puzzle’ games, which are more arcade/action/puzzle than all-out puzzle games, I’d also look at Polarium, Chu Chu Rocket, and Klonoa is a good puzzle platformer.

After a lot of faffing I've got it to boot using melonDS in desktop mode.

Haven't tried to play it yet though.

How did it go @Spleen ?

I'm having the strongest nostalgic feelings ever with a game whilst playing Guru Logic Champ, its something I'd totally forgotten about but when playing keep getting flashbacks of recognition of certain levels and being sat on the Piccadilly line going to work around 20y ago.

I put a lot of hours into Meteos (DS) when I first got it. Polarium is also fun if limited.

I also reviewed Neves on the DS for a website. Neves is seven backwards, which refers to the seven traditional tangram pieces it uses for making all of its 100+ puzzles. Really easy to play on the touchscreen and absorbing.

Going back to the C64, Reckless Rufus is like an extension of the ideas in Sensitive with a cute green alien collecting diamonds.

Managed to get it to work in melonDS, in SteamOS mode too.

You can make it work the DSi mode, and to play DSiWare games they need to be installed to the nand. I managed to 'find' all of the files I needed around the internet and alter the view in melonDS so it was usable.

It's a pretty good game from the bit I've played of it, it's no Guru Logic Champ though. Ha.

Started playing this again last night, and yeah, it’s so great. Took me back to loading a flash cart with games for my GBA SP.

Highly recommend the Miyoo Mini for all this stuff by the way. Gorgeous little thing, and the screen is wonderful. These games have never looked better.

I had never heard of this. Thank you

Is there an especially good sokoban game? I always enjoy it as a mini-game and there are so many Japan-only FC/SFC/GB titles that surely one pushes all the right boxes.

I installed this on my modded 3ds. It’s ok but it’s lacking any of the charm of guru.

in other news Cattrap is a really good game boy puzzler.

Kwirk is great too, as mentioned above

Mole Mania

Its great. If it was almost any genre other than a puzzle game it’d be worth 20x as much I think.

DS Slitherlink is amazing

The Kururin series on DS and Gamecube

Picross obviously

Mario Vs. DK has been mentioned, but the original in the series is just called Donkey Kong (confusingly) and is an excellent GB puzzler

some top tips in this thread, good stuff

I'm trying to recall (and googled to no avail) a game i used to play a lot, it was like slither link but had coloured lines that made up a picture and you had coloured dots with numbers which could only join to the same coloured end point.

can't find anything that looks the part searching for slither link, but not even sure what machine it was on now but think a handheld.

i'm googling slither links but not finding the right thing, it looked like this and if you joined the red 3's you got a red line like in my sophisticated excel mock up

you got bigger and bigger grids with bigger numbers to build up more complex pics

I'm pretty sure I've played that too but can't remember the name. Sorry. It was a great game. (not that that helps)
