Emulation on Steam Deck

Yeah the PS3 stuff is quite exciting but does seem to put the deck under a lot of strain to run - I tried a few games and Hotshots Golf shows as 'green' and compatible but seems very buggy, often not even getting to the tee then when it did was getting a frame rate of about 5 and impossible to lay a shot (luckily got plenty of Hotshots with the PSP, PS2 and other versions).

Modnation Racers is my biggest find as I just love that game, the handling is fantastic and it's got a huge single player to still play, even though driving round the main lobby with all the online stuff long turned off is very sad. Nobody nailed user content like in this game with such accessible tools creating quality content, it was at the same time as LBP was hoovering up all the critical acclaim and even now it makes me cross how that game, which was a shit platformer with clever fiddly tools, got all the acclaim whilst Modnation was often ignored.

Still I've now got Modnation PSP & PS3 on my deck, both run well and I'm very very happy. Slight tinge of sadness that I've not got all my glorious creations from the old PS3, the best being my Inbetweeners kart which was yellow, with a pink door and had 'bus wankers' written on one side.

Proton GE is my new thing to play with, JC2 runs like a charm and it's amazing to think that a handheld can now play a decade old PC game on max settings. Found the Pure PC version mentioned a few posts back and will give that an install later today to compare to the PS3 version, which runs OK and is quite playable but isn't perfect. Looks a bit more involved if this is correct.

Maybe I'm showing my bias a little, but when I see guides like that, I just think 'fuck it' and grab a no-cd crack. SecuROM is a shit.

I found the most important thing is that Sega's arcade output seems to work fine on RPCS3, so that's most of my interests covered. I still need to try Initial D and Anarchy Reigns, though.

Without trying it myself, my thought process would be along the following lines:

Spoiler

- go to desktop mode, open iso (like if it was a zip file), take all the files out onto the drive somewhere

- run the setup file through WINE, let it install files

- find the files (probably home/deck/.wine or something, idk), and move them wholesale to the place where I actually want to keep the files (like my SD card)

- find a no-cd crack, add it to that directory to replace the original .exe

- add the .exe file to Steam, force ProtonGE

- see if it runs. If it does, change the name and add art. If not, fuck around with ProtonTricks I guess

That's generally how I add games that were not on Steam in the first place (primarily Doujin PC fighting games like Big Bang Beat)

I won't mention any more without doing it myself and talking about it in the main Deck thread, as this sort of thing veers heavily away from "emulation", per se.

I've got the files you need to swap to stop it looking for a cd. I needed those even for my Steam copy. So hit me up and I'll send them to you if needed

ta appreciated - got so much to play on this now going to focus on what does run well/easily rather than fiddle endlessly on something that doesn't

I must have 20+ of the greatest arcade racing games ready to go and I'm fussing over one I can play on PS3 emu and already remembered that I love the handling but the laps all feel a bit long !

When I installed Blur, I mounted the ISO, created a non-steam game pointed at the installation .exe, enabled compatibility, and ran the installation.

Once completed I re-pointed the same non-steam game at the installed game .exe and played.

There's an extra step with Pure as you'll need to copy a no-cd .exe to the installation directory, but that should be it.

If I get time tonight I'll run through the steps.

Just done Dragon's Crown in RPCS3 and now I am tempted by the SSX reboot. I take it no one else has given that one a try and can tell me if it runs well?

I use their compatibility page to check before going for a big download, SSX looks a no no, even the greens aren't always great and ambers I'd not bother with.

If anyone can get Burnout Crash working on Steam Deck I will find some way to reward you.

Only available on RPCS3 as far as I can tell and I can't get it running. Crashes to a black screen as soon as it loads.

I've got a couple of Atari Jaguar games that seem to run fine but EmuDeck doesn't add them to a steam collection for the console like all the others, I have to run them from within the emulator, anybody noticed this ?

Some platforms don't have a Steam Tool parser to be able to add them. You need to request someone in the community make one. I saw a reddit post by someone asking the same about Vic-20 games

*Edit* Also. Does T2k work?

So there's a new really excellent Jaguar emulator just been released.

https://www.richwhitehouse.com/jaguar/index.php

and it seems to work well on SteamDeck!

Well this seems to run really well! Nothing to do apart from set up a key for escape so that you can exit the games. Tempest 2000 and Super Burnout run perfectly as far as i can see.

Spent a day or so dumping piles of ROMs onto an SD card which I can access on the Steam deck. Was planning to use Emudeck but suddenly realised most of my ROMs are zips. Does anyone know if they will run? They are all in system order so would have to go through multiple folders to unzip if that's the case or can I just leave them in the ROMs directory to play?

Yep, I have many as zip files and they work great.

There was a holiday update for Emudeck.

Holiday Update

The EmuDeck Holiday Update is here!

- HomeBrew Games - A collection of free non commercial games. Talk about them in our new Discord channel #homebrew-games ( How to launch the games? Just go Tools & Stuff - Quick Settings - Homebrew. And then open Emulation Station. The games are not available using SRM to prevent clutter. )

- AutoSave & Autoload for RA Games

- DeckyControl - See our hotkeys in gaming mode

- New Parsers

- Several bug fixes

They added my suggestion to add Vic-20 as a parser 😀

seeing some good improvements for Hot Shots Golf 2 via an update to PPSSPP, it's one of my most played games on the deck and I've noticed that the resolution being displayed for the terrain lines on the greens is now a lot better and easier to see.

Oh, great news. I’ve heard a bunch of problematic titles play much better now too (Motorstorm etc).
