Emulation on Steam Deck

What method are people using to transfer files to the Steam Deck? I’m fine with smaller ones but bigger files (3gb+ approx) are causing issues.

I’m using Batocera on the deck, transferring from a Windows 10 PC. What I’ve done:

1.  WinSCP- works, but exceedingly slow. FileZilla is much the same. Takes over an hour for a larger PS2 game. The speed it hits is about 1.5MB/s maximum, less than half of what option 2 achieves
2. Set up a SSHFS transfer thing- Windows 10 sees the drive, transfers much quicker than WinSCP. However, any file over about 2.8gb it says it cant transfer as there isn’t enough room. This is incorrect as I’m moving to a 256gb SD and there’s plenty left. It’s almost as if it can’t move files bigger than approx 3gb?

3. Tried to plug the SD card into my computer, this doesn’t work as the PC wants to format the drive as it doesn’t like the way it’s formatted. According to Microsoft my 5 year old laptop cant run Windows 11 and thus the option for Linux formatted memory card being directly viewable isn’t an option.

Is there another option that will work better? Thanks!

I've been using Warpinator.

Deck client should be in Discover

I’ve managed to get just about every system I want up and running from Neo Geo Pocket and PSP through to GameCube and more but trying to play Neo Geo games has me totally flummoxed! For some reason I can’t find anything online that creates clarity! Can anyone help?

Warpinator and winpinator worked great, thanks. It transfers at a much higher speed than WinSCP and seems more steady too.

Does it? I found it slow and unstable last time I tried. Might have to try again.

I've only used emudeck and it has been ideal for me

Thanks I heard it was messy due to the file structure?. While I would try both, I just want to dump some roms and play from the get go and not have to think about it too much. Been tinkering with the deck and it's been bit of a struggle.

I've only used Emudeck and found it great, really helpful though to watch some Youtube to get a feel for how to get things setup and running, it's very easy but with desktop mode being linux and the home-brew nature of it all initially appears to be far more complicated.

You can do the whole thing easily with no keyboard or mouse connected on the deck, I have.

I cannot express enough how impressed I am with how painless and gorgeous it is to get emulation up and working on Emudeck.  I finally got round to setting up a handful of curated games across a few systems* which scratch that nostalgia itch and games I’ve always wanted to play but never got the chance to being poor back in the day (still am to be honest).  I didn’t want thousands of games on the deck which I’d never play just the best of the best across systems. I’ve got it setup in Steam under my collections library and not under Emustation as I’d rather a tile for individual games with their artwork all in steam.  It works seamlessly with my retro achievements account so it will be fun to try and collect achievements in games that never originally had achievements.  Controls are mostly setup by default so no tinkering required.  It’s still a work in progress as I have to setup bios for systems that require them and some artworks are either missing or wrong but it’s a great start.  The older computers like spectrum and c64 require specific actions to launch games or may need to be run in alternative cores so need to work on them.  Love it.

Planning to setup a Rom hack collection.  I’ve already got AMR2 setup

*Mame arcade, zx spectrum, Amiga, c64, nes, gameboy, SNES, n64, ,master system, NDS, Saturn, Dreamcast, PlayStation 1&2, PSP, vita

Confession - my Deck sits in a dock next to my Mac, sometimes I just turn the deck on to have a look at the library of neatly organised classics roms I have with their nice box artworks, then I don't play anything I just turn it off.

Makes me happy seeing them all neatly organised like that.

Me too

Must admit I've been spending an unhealthy amount of time looking for the 'right' boxart between mobygames, SteamGrid DB amd Emumovies for games with missing or incorrect boxart.

On my main PC I have Launchbox with thousands of boxart images (front and back of boxart) which takes me down memory lane.

EDIT:  Off topic but Launchbox have just released an update where you can use 3D box art and you can view an manipulate the boxart to view from any angle.  Boxart porn   Shame there are no plans to release a proper Linux version of Launchbox for Steam deck

Yeah, BIOS files are just fussy wankers at the best of times. Try moving the files around so they're at the root of the directory, worse case scenario redownload them or try another set or single bios file.

Edit: to quote myself like a dickhead from the main deck thread:

Quote

In other news: I fixed my Emudeck problems by getting another BIOS pack and dumping it into the folder twice because I'm an idiot who can't remember how it was set up in the first place - so there's a set of BIOS files in /bios/, and a set of BIOSes in /bios/system/. Everything works great on the default settings now, and it's a night and day difference on PPSSPP (although Gran Turismo PSP is still being a shit to run outside of Standalone).

But hey: portable Burning Rangers

I’ve got the BIOS files duplicated in the root and sub folders but no joy.  I’ll maybe try another set from another source

EDIT: yesss, got it working.  Scrubbed everything in the Dreamcast folders and obtained from another source and just got RE:CV working

i love this machine 🥰

Looks like Nintendo have put a take down on steamgrid db artwork for their games.

Not sure what will happen if i run the steam rom manager now where I’ve got good artwork, may overwrite with an ugly black box ?

It was too easy and too nice to last I guess

I think it’s for specific games on the switch only.  Most artwork will stay on Steam Grid. There’s other sources for artwork besides unless the get DMCA’s from Nintendo as well.  Shows Nintendo are slightly fearful of the Steamdeck.

Nah, just Nintendo being Nintendo. They're famously litigious.

True, I just find the timing strange as some artworks for for Switch games have been up on Steam Grid DB for years.  Maybe its due to the release of the new Pokemon.  Steam deck is never going to do Nintendo switch numbers

Just dipping my toe into PS3 emulation - seems a bit more involved and fiddly so need to read a guide on getting things setup, you can get the Sony firmware from their site directly and the isos start to get very large.

Did though get these 2 running

Not made any game specific settings, JC2 is something I had 100+ plus in and the subsequent games never bettered, did the intro mission which was fine but did get a bit choppy when screen got busy so not sure if I can iron that out.

Pure plays beautifully, the handling remains sublime, frame rate felt good but there was some intrusive shadowing over the track which got better with each lap, so hoping it was some shader thing that was improving the more i played.

Will be circumspect loading these up as the files are huge and take a while to come down, it makes the fans blow like a jet playing them and the emulation is quite his and miss from game to game so need to do a bit of homework on each title.

Holy shit got my all time favourite PS3 game, ModNation Racers, up and running quite well.

A few misses but fiddling with this I'm learning to check the RPCS3 compatibility page before committing to a multi gig download, and also learned about opening the emulator to load the games and even check for patches and applying recommended custom settings.

It's not as simple as drag and drop with the older machines but not silly complicated either, done it all direct on the deck with no mouse or keyboard attached.

Whenever I think I can't get any more impressed with the Deck it goes and does something like this, what an amazing machine.

haha, PSP been fine for me with no fiddling, even had GT up the other night. Burning Rangers won't load on mine though !

I got Burning Rangers up and working.  Didn’t do anything special as far as I’m aware.

Snap, just looking to get PS3 stuff working later today.  I think I’ve got all major systems up and working up to GameCube.

I hoping to get Red Dead Redemption working.  Still gutted in never got a PC release.  I completed it on my Xbox360 on its release. Hopefully it runs ok on Deck.

Just Cause 2 is on Steam and plays perfectly on the Deck if you use -dx11 in the launcher, FYI:

Will run a lot better than a PS3 emulated copy.

There are PC versions of both of these which should be significantly earlier for the Deck to run (Pure is on archive.org, JC2 is 99p https://store.steampowered.com/app/8190/Just_Cause_2/). Just in case you didn’t realise.. 😊

Bloody hell, proton ge installed in desktop mode and set to that 99p copy of Just Cause 2 - then runs with all graphic settings maxxed as clean as anything, very impressive.

Don’t need that PS3 copy now as the ‘unsupported’ PC version is perfect
