Flipping consoles around then rebuying etc...

I like to have all three consoles and be in a position to play exactly the games I want. Although these days it can be overwhelming now that I have Game Pass and PS+ Premium, that’s a hell of a lot of games between the two.

I mainly play on my Switch though.

Amen!

Never sold anything gaming on I don't think, not even a game. I view it as either far far far too much faff or like I'm getting not getting enough for it to be worth it.

I often go 6 months without playing anything. But that doesn't bother me. I don't worry about the consoles or whatever being sat around unused.

And whilst I've never bought a console at launch i do end up with all of them for the most part each generation. There will be something I want to play most years. The PS5 might be the first to miss out on that for a long time. Just no interest in it. But if one thing of actual interest turns up I'll probably jump, and even if that's all I play it will still sit in my lounge for years before moving to the attic.

I often puzzle over the people who do move things on. It just feels so utterly alien a concept to me.

I used to horde consoles... then had a clear out around 5 years ago and vowed never to do it again! :D

But its slowly building up again ... Wii (for Wii Fit and Mario Galaxies), 360 E (for PGR4) and now OG XBO (for all the older 360 stuff and some other XBO only games)

mmmmm. Still at least I have a curated collection of physical disks this time and digitsed the Wii games.

I've never done this and I'm fascinated by the people on this forum who do it multiple times every single console gen unless they're stuck for cash.

When you go to sell your 4th switch do you not think "hmmm there is a slight chance I might maybe end up doing this again so maybe I should keep it"?

Buying and reselling PS5s or graphics cards at above rrp which some people have mentioned doing in this thread is just regular opportunistic scalping.

I can understand people who do this for cash flow reasons, it's not optimal but if you're gonna be playing specific releases rather than collecting then it sort of makes sense to keep trading in or selling consoles so you're never tying up your money in gadgets.

But for people who do end up collecting, I really don't get it. Over the course of a generation, you'll lose money not just constantly flipping the consoles but buying games at full price rather than waiting for the games to drop or playing them at the end of the gen. If you want to be current, you'll save money not constantly flipping them and if you're trying to game on a budget then your best bet is always that period where the platform's matured and they're trying to convince everyone the new shiny is worth upgrading to.

Is it not more about stripping things down a bit rather than a money thing? Having less (visible) things vying for your attention?

I’ve never done it myself, but I’ve got all three consoles under the telly this gen and I’m thinking of getting rid of one as even without the subscriptions on top, it does feel like gaming dominates too many of my evenings. Before, the quiet patches in between releases would be when I’d lean more into films or books. Now it’s just straight onto the next one in the pile.

I get what you mean, my simple answer is just to not worry about it. I've got a stupid backlog (I know) but if I don't want to play games, I won't - and I can go days or weeks without putting something on if I feel like I'd rather read or watch something or go out instead. I don't let it overwhelm me and I don't really care about FOMO any more, it's just a hobby and it's not going to go anywhere if I don't play on day 1.

Last (non duplicate) console I sold was a SNES in about 1996, I think. So no.

I can't bring myself to get rid of consoles. I always think "I'll go back to that" and so keep everything. I've never even traded a game in, let alone a console. I always buy what I want when I can afford it.

I've always been a one current gen at a time sort of gamer. If there's anything I feel like I've missed out on, I might pick up a second and third as the generation comes to an end, but I'll always keep what I've already got.

I've also never felt the urge to "upgrade" a console. Do I've never owned the slim / lite / X or whatever version of anything I already own.

I think I just don't consider them something I could sell. And if I did, it would have to be at a point where I really didn't want it and would then not be rebuying one again.

I've never flipped my consoles. I still have most of my consoles I've ever owned in storage, but a few have disappeared over the years.

I still have a NES, SNES, Master System, Game Gear, Megadrive, N64, PS1, PS2, Gamecube, X360, PS3, PS4, PS4 Pro, 3DS XL, PSP, PS5, Xbox One, Series S and Series X.

I used to have an Amiga CD32, a Game Boy and a Panasonic 3DO but don't know how/when/where they disappeared.

I never owned a Dreamcast, Neo Geo or Saturn

I buy and sell tech in here and elsewhere all the time usually within a few months of buying it too. (Reason -  have no time to play games but love the idea of it!)

Lost count the amount of consoles and PC / Laptops I’ve had over the years, that I’ve bought, sold then bought again.

my biggest regret was a Dreamcast package I had, console and peripherals,  80 odd games, all mags and associated demo cd’s.  Sold it for less than £150 delivered (was at least 15 years ago I recon).  Needed the money at the time.

currently have 2 years left on my GamePassUltimate and a year on PSPlus or whatever it is called, but only a Series X under the TV which never gets used.

I do have both a Win98 tower and a win xp sff machine to sell as well as a new MacMini and new MacBook Air to get rid of now that I’ve moved up to a MacBook Pro lol.

I was saying the other day that I’ve been asked to dismantle the video game collection, currently in my front room.

someone asked me what was in it.

pc engine, wii, Xbox, Xbox 360S, ps2, ps3, SNK MVS, Dreamcast, RetroN, Pandora3D+, on a 42” panasonic viera

”that’s not so bad”

And on the 40” Samsung ju6000 a

ps4, ps5, Xbox one x, Xbox series S

”okaaay… wait, in your front room?”

in the garage are a phat 360, another ps2, an SNK AES, a SNES, Atari jaguar, couple of ps1s, and a megadrive

”stop now”

spare room has 3 saturns, there’s an Amiga 500, an Atari ST, some n64s,  and a master system.

”that’s a lot”

and this Xbox one under my desk that I’m too scared to take home just yet.

I’m going to need a LOT of Kallax…

oh and I’d rather give away than sell.

But that’s just me.

Similarly the Dreamcast is the only console I regret selling, hadn’t played it for a while, recently moved house, wanted the space - I’ve nearly bought another one multiple times but it’ll never be the same (and likely much more expensive).

That’s good to hear! You know where the PM button is when you decide to get of the AES then. More than happy to pay the postage. 😉

True story, @Droo has first dibs. When the time comes.

a droo story, if you will…

Indeed.. sold my DC collection a while back. Never really used it so rather someone else had the value out of it all!

Don't think I could ever go back to one.. that noisy GD-ROM drive and loading times etc. Also that pad wasn't that great - good at the time but things have moved on since then. I do think the Xbox is kind of the natural successor to the DC in some ways.. pad layout and feel, SEGA games getting ported over etc.

Not really regretted getting rid of consoles TBH. Most games I'm interested in these days can be accessed one way or another.. via PC (emulation) or on various remasters etc and the Xbox is great with its BC. Have two mini Nintendo consoles (NES/SNES) that cover off most 8bit/16bit era Ninty things I enjoy - although hardly play on them that much they make nice little ornaments though! :D

Shocking as it may well be to say it, but I think I hated the Dreamcast. I hated the dodgy disc-drive that never read my Shenmue games reliably, and I hated the controller. That analogue stick with the dimples on was painful to use for any length of time. Also, the right trigger on my one squeaked like a bugger every time I played it.

And yet...and yet...I still have the fucker in the attic somewhere.

Bizarre.

Bizarre.

Sega's last home machine. It's the only reason I had mine in the end. It did have quite the diverse set of games on it though in its relatively short life.

Always a fan of Sega kit and had a Saturn too. Didn't rally buy into Playstation although hadn't much choice after the DC got pulled. Didn't bother with a Xbox for a few years either although I was impressed when I did give it a blast.. despite it being a MS console. :D

The flip side of this is people who seem to keep buying the same console without selling the old one. The Xbox thread is full of people posting stuff like "just picked up a Series S on the way home for the spare bedroom, so I'm moving the wife's spare Series S into the toilet, and moving the One X from the toilet into the conservatory", as if every room in their house now has at least one Xbox in it.

I don't think that's odd, but it's not something I've ever thought of doing. I'm defiantly a creature of habit and find I cannot play games unless I'm in my little office with everything close to hand. I've tried moving machines to the living room, but never liked it much and feel genuinely uncomfortable without all my precious things surrounding me.

Like a tech cocoon.

I think it was NTSC.  Can’t believe how cheap I sold it for back then and what it would be worth now.

At least it went to a good home.

And yes I still pick things the same way when I sell them.  Never had anything arrive damaged :)

Im so close to pulling the trigger on a DC and starting it all again.  Loved that console.

I am the same, I just can't get comfortable playing games in the living room. So much so that I have moved my 50" tv and Series X into the office with my PC.

Go for it... I think there is a good mod scene now and you can do all sorts of cool things with them these days.. I believe you can remove the GD-ROM and put a solid state drive in there so digitise your collection!

Of course depends how much of the memories are viewed from rose tinted glasses... :D

Always loved MSR, Shenmue and a few others on the DC but all my fav games are available elsewhere now... so personally have no desire to revisit.

The only console I've flipped was the 3DS and that was recently as I realised how much gaming goodness I had lost. Got a 2DS XL now that I have modded but realised that you can't change the battery so one day it will die on me
