Retro game prices on ebay

I feel like I’ve been hearing the Atari example as a prediction of the coming fall in prices for so long that it should have come true for NES and the like at this stage if it was actually an accurate analysis.

I think it’s more likely that that pre-nes era stuff is just a bit crap in hindsight and that’s the main reason it’s not that popular to collect (I assume, I’ve never checked).

I would have thought that 2600 stuff would appeal more to collectors, as the box art and design of a lot of the games seems a step above most of the stuff from that era. The games themselves are crude in the extreme. You'd never play it, but it looks nice on the shelf.

Atari is a dead brand, so I'm not surprised new collectors aren't picking it up.

I'm sure there are plenty of younger Nintendo nuts who would like to own older systems and games with recognisable characters like Mario and Kirby though. And then there's Pokemon of course.

It's actually quite annoying trying to find some later released PS2 games on ebay unsealed... you know, for playing not putting in the backdrop of a YouTube video. It feels like some games you can only find sealed now, selling for crazy prices and going up by the day.

Off topic but with this in mind, I'd highly recommend the book, Art of Atari. There's some genuinely stunning box art in the VCS library.

Yeah, I keep thinking about buying that. It looks great, but I have no sentimental attachment to Atari 2600 games so I’m always a bit reluctant to shell out for it. I wish someone would do something similar for Amiga games.

For some reason I don't understand I bought street fighter 2, street fighter 2 turbo, super Street fighter 2 super Famicom carts on eBay. I have an everdrive, this purchase makes no sense at all. It's something about 10 year old me so badly wanting an NTSC version of street fighter 2 plus art on the sticker of the cart looking way cooler.

Blame idiots like me!

Though to be fair those 3 carts cost 25 quid in total.

Yeah playing on real hardware is the best, its cool emulating but there's something playing on original hardware that just feels right. Playing on an emulator with a an xbox controller while more elegant and hassle free feels different even though I can't put my finger why.

This is the original reason for the 2nd hand gaming market. You had a love/desire for the stuff when you were younger, you’re not breaking the bank and it makes you smile to see them sitting there.

I must admit I do usually click the BIN button if the item is at a price that I think is acceptable.

 

Can't stand being sniped at the last second. Happens so often.

 

However, sometimes I just stick a bid on a forget about it. Those ones I usually win.

 

I still find it hard to believe that there is someone else trying to buy the exact same item at the same time as me.

Yea, I’m surprised eBay has never employed the same system as Yahoo Actions.

 

It stops sniper bid (to a certain extent) by resetting the timer to 5 mins if someone bids within that last 5 mins of the auction. This allows someone the opportunity to come back with another bid if they want it.

Trying to think why eBay wouldn't implement that. They'd probably say their system is what people are used to, or it stops people over-bidding. I suspect, if they had half the chance, eBay would bin auctions altogether and just have BIN on everything like Amazon Marketplace, except maybe high-value auctions where they take a good percentage. I'm a mug for expecting these things to have some sense of fairness built in, but then what normal person has the means or wherewithal to snipe?

I can’t stand that yahoo auctions system where it all kicks off in the last few minutes every single time. Way too much effort.
One of the main reasons why Mercari seems to have eaten so much of their market I’m sure.  
Mercari is a whole site of inflated “buy it now” prices so that has issues too. 
Nowadays almost every retro game on the Japanese sites is more expensive than in shops in Japan (ranging from a bit more expensive to multiples of the price). It goes against the logic that shops have more overheads etc and should charge more, unless we assume that most of the online stuff is being bought in the shops by flippers and then price inflated for overseas buyers.

But this is the nature of an auction.

 

An auction is whatever you’re prepared to pay so ‘overpaying’ is subjective. 
 

I think it’s about the opportunity. You can put in what you’re prepared to pay, get outbid and then you can decide if you want to bid more. You don’t get this option with eBay.

I recently picked up 5 really nice condition N64 games from CEX for a total of £77. Goldeneye, Turok, 1080, Wave Race and F1 World GP. So nothing r@re or anything like that m.

 

Decided after a week or two to stick them on eBay, as I’m generally collecting NTSC stuff to play and they’d just sit on the shelf.

 

They sold for £390. Turok, which cost me £20, went for £170! 
 

Absolute madness.

There’s no shame in admitting you bought them to flip on eBay for profit. Up on eBay after an entire week of ownership just cos 

I bought about 60 Japanese n64 carts recently and I’m sure the total price was less than 100 pounds. Basically the entire Japanese catalogue of any merit aside from Sin and Punishment and Bangai O (more expensive) and Goldeneye (Japanese version slightly pricey compared to other Japanese games and not sure I want it in 2022). Japanese n64 games are dirt cheap, boxed or unboxed. I got carts because when boxed games are worthless you kind of see the reality that a bunch of boxes = a bunch of cardboard clutter.

 

 I got most of the classics, Mario 64, Mario kart, both Zeldas, pilotwings, starfox, smash bros, Paper Mario etc etc from 100 yen bins, most of the ones that cost a bit more are relatively crap games. So my recommendation for anyone who wants cheap retro games in 2022 is Japanese n64 games.
