I guess my question is if I thought 2019 was "shit" will I get anything out of this?

Probably not. It's less oo-rah U-S-A and bombastic (so far anyway) a bit slower paced with more of a focus on tense set pieces than 2019. It revisits some of the greatest hits levels from the original MW  -not sure if they improve on the originals but what's here is excellent. Perhaps not as iconic or memorable as the original. I'm finding it less hectic than 2019 and more focussed.

Yeah see I kind of fell off MW2019's single player pretty hard. I liked the Piccadilly level and the house level was cool but the enemies were just cardboard cutouts that popped out and died and I wasn't compelled to finish it. And yeah the storyline just kind of put me off. I guess I was a very different (18 year old) person when I played the original Modern Warfare and it was all so new but nothing pushed me through the reboot really.

Will definitely give this a go for the shinies and DEM GUN SOUNDZ though!

Watching a little bit of it on Youtube now.

Bloody hell -

Amsterdam

is almost photorealistic in what it's doing isn't it?

Very impressive - what tech is it running on?

It's just a pity it's so short with fuck all to do.

Might as well have been a cut scene.

I got Hitman vibes from it :P . I kept on wanting someone to kill people with unusual implements.

As much as I'm enjoying it, I have to say that one level just now was a complete disaster and reminded me of GTA3 levels of frustration. The kind of frustration that makes you want to eat your own elbows. Nearly binned it at that point. The pace and lack of checkpoints was a total contrast to everything that went before it.

Just be warned that there is a potential sticking point in the game if you don't have the patience. Even on the easiest difficulty level I was seething. Awful.

I know these campaigns are looked down upon but this is the most entertaining thing I've played in ages.

There's issues, sure - and it's the same gameplay you've come to expect from call of duty but the gulf in quality between this and the last two entries is just insane. This is proper A-tier stuff.

The facial animation during the cut scenes is ridiculous. I genuinely had to check if I was watching CGI or live action. The nuances and little touches are incredibly convincing (half a bottle of wine disclaimer) - skin textures, lighting, motion, it's all captured insanely well. For what it is, a ride that you're along for, there's nothing like it.

Absolutely. The pre mission scene up in the big plane with Graves lip movements were... Kinda ridiculous. It's great.

Playing this makes me kinda sad at the state of Battlefield these days. Back in the day this was the bombastic shit I expected from a Battlefield campaign.

But yeh as it is now, this is the best Hollywood shooter I've played in years. It's a nice contrast to Doom 2016 which I'm re-running though on the Deck too at the moment - both doing their own thing and great at it.

Amsterdam's a lovely looking level, but one of the least interesting moments in the campaign and almost completely void of gameplay. Shitting myself in astounded glee over photorealism isn't something I'll ever do.

Now, them gun sounds... bang! Bang!

That

convoy

level looked okay to me (though I wasn't playing it and the dude who was also complained about it), but the only sequences that stuck out to me as being... well, shit, were the

Spoiler

solo Soap escapades where Ghost would Macgyver him a tutorial over the radio on how to dash around picking up bottles of bleach and toilet paper to make bombs with against the clock of enemies actively trying to kill him. It's very, very silly stuff.

Most of it was class though. I've never really been keen on MW's campaigns (cool setpieces, dull gameplay imo) for the most part but there was something about this one that stood out to me as being really rather cool. Maybe it's the intimacy, feels less like some big global bombastic-but-hollow thing and more like covert missions by a core group of dudes who are actually surprisingly likable this time out.

Was 2019 good? I skipped it, like I've skipped most entries post 'previous' MW2.

Just completed it. I'd say this is pretty accurate. The missions are more about infiltration, breach and clear, tactical operations, rather than all-out pew-pew. Lots of variety and switching up methods - it has DNA from Hitman, Last Of Us, MGSV, Uncharted, even a bit of early Far Cry, all in small doses but concentrated enough to be satisfying. It's definitely a more sombre and ominous ride than before and doesn't have the loud USA! patriotism everywhere.

Weapons feel incredible as expected, visual feedback and audio is exceptional and for the first time I can recall since since Criterion's Black, guns felt alive, dynamic and dangerous. Combat is gnarly and close-range a lot of the time so you'll see a lot of gibs and brutal take-downs.

The level design and structure is creative and bold - familiar scenes from previous CoD campaigns have been reworked in imaginative and fresh ways so it never just feels like a greatest hits compilation. Interesting to see if these additions and twists make their way to the MP maps.

The cut scenes, cinematics and visuals overall are incredible, the entire game just flows with seemingly no loading between chapters and plays out like a movie. Everything is polished to perfection and insanely detailed. Lighting, atmosphere, locations, characters, effects, you won't have seen anything as good as this anywhere.

Apart from one mission I pretty much loved everything and will definitely play through it again before the MP unlocks - never felt compelled to do that before with a CoD.

So yeah. A good 'un.

Sorry for the slight diversion,  but can you get the 2019 Modern Warfare on PC anywhere aside from directly on Battle.net? I can't even see anywhere to buy the fucker elsewhere, and I'm sure as fuck not paying £50 for a three year old game.

It’s definitely a call of duty game, and the first I’ve touched in years. But if this is toning down the USA military porn, I’m glad it’s the first I’ve touched in years.

and it’s still “follow my leader, press x to continue”, just with amazing cutscene graphics.

spoiler, about eight missions in?

Spoiler

Really wish we’d explored the colourful Mexico town rather than just a cutscene drive through it.

Bought this for MP and my main recollection of COD was frustrating waves of endlessly spawning baddies. Glad I gave it a go though as it's excellent, most closely reminds me of Metro 2033 with shooting at it's core but every level introduces different mechanics to keep things fresh. Also hallelujah for something you can enjoy and blitz over a single rainy weekend.

Yeah this is really really good fun. It's doing literally nothing new but my Christ it looks and sounds fantastic. It's also yet another huge tick for the haptics on the Dualsense. I cannot imagine playing this game without them. The guns already sound amazing but coupled with feeling every bullet, every reload... it's immense! I'm still pretty early on but I picked up what I think is called the RAAM or something during a mission escaping an army and every time I stopped to take out the soldiers behind me I smiled and just thought "oh you guys are FUCKED!" By the end of the clip your hands are shaking and your ears are ringing and it's just... it's just very good fun really. Play it on Regular at most, though. I started on Hardcore but switching it down has just made the whole thing so much more fun.

Obviously morally all over the place but you kind of have to expect that with COD. If you ignore what's actually happening and treat it as a big silly shooting gallery there's a fair bit of fun to be had.
