Been thinking about this for a while and I'd like to invite suggestions for other examples.  There must be loads out there.

 

So I'm looking for examples of when the one that everyone knows is the best thing, isn't the best thing.  It could be a game, a console, a thing in life - anything at all.  

 

Couple of examples:

 

Thing everyone knows is best:

Mario Kart - the series culminating in Mario Kart 8.

Thing that's actually the best: Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed.  A way better cart racer that doesn't seem to get mentioned much, pisses all over Mario Kart.  Better game in every respect.

 

Thing everyone knows is best:

Penguin Biscuits 

Actually the best - Aldi own brand Seal bars. Yummy.

 

Thing everyone knows is Best.

Super Metroid 

Actually best 

AM2R and Zero Mission and Fusion. Just way better, refined, smoother, better controls. Just better.

It is brutal we only got one game in what could have been a huge, long running series.  

 

I started playing this again last week as it it works on my Steam Deck really well. Not played it since I 100%d every difficulty on the 360 version.

 

It's still good, but my god are the talky bits painful. Worst acting ever.

I feel the op has a bit more of a point than just an opinion thing.  Mario kart has far more market penetration that other cart racer so is the one always picked up and spoke of but that doesn't mean its the best.  Far smaller offerings which didn't have advertising or such might be better.  I know a lot of people love Diddy Kong racing for example but it didn't have any of the marketing love that mario kart had at the time.  

 

Personally I prefered mario kart 64 but subjectively it may not be the best.

The post-schism Guitar Hero games* are better than the post-schism Rock Band games. 

 

Everyone loves Rock Band because it's the plucky little original developer going it alone, and everyone hates Guitar Hero because it had been sold out to big bad Activision.

 

Yes the GH presentation can be a bit cringe, but the actual gameplay is a marked improvement. Obviously they're fundamentally similar but they're not identical. 

 

 

 

 

*Not counting GH Live, which is really Guitar Hero In Name Only. It was interesting but just too flawed.

The best kart racer by far was Modnation Racers on PS3 = great handling, huge career mode and online and the best customisation and track creations tools ever seen in a game.

 

LBP always get the plaudits for UGC but the game was shit, Modnation gave you great tools that were easy to use plus a great game.
