The second one is a port of the Vita game.

Glad I clicked page two of this thread or I would have looked like quite the fool repeating this point.

Personally I preferred the Vita game on Vita. It's still my favourite entry to the series, and not just because it's the only version I've ever got a hole in one on.

World Tour is ace though. What a lovely series. Even the jarringly odd PS4 one.

I picked up World Tour recently, so I'm looking forward to giving that a spin.

Chains Of Olympus is so good. Yes it's neutered in some ways, but the balance of combat and puzzle solving is so much better than God Of Bore III.

I think my daughter is buying me the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection for my birthday so that's a series I'm looking forward to playing through as well. Great that so many of the games are on a single system.

I've eyed up the God of War collection before (completed them on PS2 back in the day and loved them but don't have them anymore) but isn't it true that the PSP games were a download voucher code in the box (which would obviously have been used or expired by now)? Hate stuff like that...just put them on the disc! I'm sure a Blu could handle it...

Anyway, I didn't get my PS3 at launch (because crazy price lol) and held out until the first Slim. Picked up the 250GB model that I still have now, on account that Yakuza 3 had not long launched, and I couldn't NOT play that. Think I also bought Super Street Fighter IV at the same time as that was another I was itching to play.

There was a lot to hate about the PS3 imo. Slow install/download times, rubbish/slow Store navigation, several games that were worse than on 360 (Bayonetta for one), and the fact that backwards-compatability with PS2 didn't last long (and was never 100% compatible even with the 60GB launch model).

But I still loved mine and it was THE place to be when you enjoy quirky JRPG's and weird import curios. True, there may not be as many killer exclusives in terms of highly-rated games, but you could only get the NIS, Gust, and other JRPGs on the PS3. At one time I had loads of them: Cross Edge, Hyperdimension Neptunia, Time & Eternity, Mugen Souls Z, Ar Tonelico 3 etc. Most of what I once owned has long since been sold off if I wasn't going to realistically play it again but I still have:

Valkyria Chronicles

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

King of Fighters XIII

Driver San Francisco

No More Heroes: Heroes' Paradise (quite pricy now)

Tekken Hybrid

Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition

GTA IV + Episodes (all inclusive version)

GTA V

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3

Anarchy Reigns

Ultra Street Fighter IV

Soulcalibur IV (steelbook edition)

Vanquish

Lollipop Chainsaw

Street Fighter X Tekken

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 ("We Are Tekken" collector's edition)

Digital (not including PS1 downloads):

Daytona USA

Afterburner Climax (no longer available to buy)

Double Dragon Neon

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

Hotline Miami

Marvel Vs Capcom Origins (arcade ports of Marvel Superheroes + the original MvC...no idea if this has since been delisted)

Fighting Vipers

One of the PS3's biggest weaknesses is that a lot of games were also on 360, but - moreoever - so many have been re-released on the PS4/XB1 as remastered or DLC-inclusive editions that are undeniably just better. Valkyria Chronicles for instance...I have the DLC for it, but it is readily available remastered on PS4 with the DLC included. Same goes for many PS3 games.

Ah the PS3.  Probably my 2nd most favourite console after the Super NES.  I have two - the first one was the original launch model in the UK, so it has backwards compatibility (yes, partly provided by software).  The thing is this one after a few years did the dreaded red-light-of-death thing, thankfully a friend I used to work with asked me to send it to him where he revived it and got the game out too.  His advice was to purchase a new PS3 and transfer everything onto it via ethernet.  So I got a PS3 slim (no backwards compatibility) and transferred everything over.  That's the one that's still connected up to my TV.

I recently got a PS5 and contemplated removing the PS3 altogether, because I needed the space.  Instead, I've got it standing up on the floor by the TV stand, although not connected to the TV because I need a better HDMI switch.  I still have an issue with using the internet though, the network cable is in the PS5 and I have run out of ports on the BT Smart Hub 2 router (I'm not sure about using the wifi because it only does 802.11g and if I have it on it'll slow down the wifi for everything connecting to the router).

The funny thing is that because the PS4's games and peripherals work on the PS5, I'm contemplating removing the PS4 from my TV stand, but keeping the PS3.  I really can't get rid of the PS3 cos there are some golden games on it, inlcuding Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Sonic CD, and Daytona USA.

I bought a 60Gb Japanese machine 2 weeks after the launch there with Ridge Racer 7 from GameChoiceClub.

I was working for GameStation at the time and had the package delivered there. There were some envious customers the day it arrived!!

In the February the following year I went to Tokyo for the first time with a fantastic exchange rate and managed to get Resistance, MotorStorm and VF5 for about £25 each!

Loved the PS3 a lot! So many awesome games, both big AAA titles and smaller DL stuff:

The Last of Us

Uncharted 1 - 3

Ratchet & Clank (ToD & CiT)

God of War 3

Dead Space 1 & 2

inFamous 1 & 2

Everybody's Gold World Tour

Killzone 3

Metal Gear Rising

Binary Domain

Vanquish

Bayonetta (yes, better on 360)

All those Yakuza sequels

MGS 4

Tokyo Jungle

The Last Guy

The Puppeteer

Great machine!!

I refuse to try PS3 streaming via PSPlus Gold Super EX Alpha on my PS5. I don't want it to sully the memories.

and the PS3 is still set up, and plugged in. Gets an update every fucking evening, around 11pm. Though I suspect it's just uninstalling the TV apps as they drop support for them.

When Sony were trying to shutdown the PS3 store last year, I covered a ton of the more lesser known titles.

There is some really interesting and obscure stuff if you take a look like:

Okabu, which is a great little two player adventure game (Not sure if this this is delisted or if you have to download the demo and buy it from the XMB menu now.)

Super Rub a Dub is another whacky and off the wall early download game tuck away in the store and uses six axis controls. For the price I really enjoyed it

You have all the Mad Dog McCree games, Mad Dog II: The Lost Gold, The Last Bounty Hunter and Fast Draw Showdown.

Other lesser known games to look out for:

Crash Commando
Hustle Kings
Starhawk
Toy Home
Everybody's Golf 6
Time Crisis: Razing Storm
When Vikings Attack!
3D Dot Game Heroes

Raiden IV: Overkill

Pinball Dreams
Pinball Fantasies

Dark Mist: The Depths of Darkness

Buying stuff is very long winded now as you have to put money on your account via the website or PS4/PS5, then buy items from the PS3 store, goes without staying you need the same account across all. Word of warning the PSP & PSVita transfer feature from PS3 was broken for some games in the last update. Sony now say that feature is no longer supported. :(

That’s pretty naff. Had no idea.

You had no idea that the cable to charge the Dual Shock 3 uses a mini-USB connection? But you've been binging on PS3 games lately?
Do you never have to charge your controller? Does it have a mini-nuclear power-plant inside? Where can I get one of these?

TBF @strider is a retro expert and the PS3 isn't retro.

I am quite a fan of the PS3 and that's in part due to the JRPG's that were released on it (though many have since come to other consoles or pc) but this was where they all started so at the time it was a brilliant console to me -

Tales of Xillia 1 & 2 (these turned up quite late on from memory so got somewhat overlooked as people moved onto the new consoles)

Tales of Graces F (I did love this game)

Folklore

Eternal Sonata (I think this was on the 360 as well?)

Resonance of fate

The guided fate paradox

Trails of cold steel games

It is also an era that brought us many of the game series that are still loved today, uncharted, last of us etc. So whilst the console may not hold up well when you consider a lot of the games have remasters and the such on newer hardware it has quite a place in Sony's history.

The Guided Fate Paradox is a really fun roguelike with a typical NIS premise. It needs to be brought out on Switch and/or PC.

I know it's an 'all you have to do is make significant effort and do some stuff you might not be comfortable doing' situation, but I replaced the battery in my DS3 with a higher capacity one and it's great. I also have a USB mini to USB C convertor (cost like a quid off AliExpress) meaning I can use plenty of cables to charge it.

Also PS3 is 15 years old so it's definitely retro

Yes I knew that. I read your post as the battery had completely died and couldn’t be recharged.

i’ve charged mine twice so far.

What's the disdain for mini USB? You get the lead with the console. If you don't have one, you buy one from ebay...

The only thing I don't particulary like is that the stock lead was too short. That and you can't charge a DS3 in a wall socket unless you buy a charging dock or specific adaptor. No idea if the batteries work the same as those in phones, but - with phones - using the device while it is charging is classed as "parasitic charging" and is actually unhealthy for the long-term life of the battery.

It’s one of those where you realise you don’t have one lying about anymore because everything is micro or in my case, an iPhone lead as well. I noticed it started happening with me since going back to it over the last couple of years and I’d be knackered whenever Id miss-place the cable (which I’ve done). It’s easy enough just to get a new one though.

As for the pad itself, I feel like I’m one of the only people who’s never had a major issue with it. The only thing I would say is that they are definitely prone to being possessed and pressing buttons at random and it happens with mine but always continues to work fine once it stops. It’s always when I first load up the system. Pushing at the pad seems to help at times too. It needs looking into really but for the most part works so I haven’t bothered opening it up yet.

I’ve been re-visiting my PS3 for about 2 years now after being off it for a few years prior in favour of my PS4 (which also led to me going back to my PS2 as well). A mate of mine was using his PS3 in 2020 as he hadn’t even updated his console to a PS4 until literally the last 6-12 months. He picked up Star Ocean - A New Hope and I thought it’d be cool to get it myself, play it through at the same time and allow it to be a talking point somewhat like back in our school days.

Since then I’ve bought and played things like Resonance of Fate, Nier, Tomb Raider, Arkham Assylum & City and currently 120 hours into Dragon Age Origins.

I’ve bought a fair few PS3/PS2 games in fact and stung myself a bit by over spending when I panicked that some were increasing in price. I literally spent £80+ on Drakengard 3 because I’d been planning on getting it (I’d just finished Drakengard 2) and all the copies suddenly disappeared and ended up through the roof. That game then went right down months later. It was blatant manufactured price rising as I watched it jump instantly and spotted eBay copies vanish.

I’ve got Folklore, Siren, White Knight Chronicles (WKC the latest purchase picked up for £4 in cex a few weeks back) and the rest of Dragon Age series to do as well as more stuff. Found something called ar nosurge ode to an unborn star that I splashed over £30 on a few months back. Bit of a risk as I don’t know much about it other than it’s some Jrpg I’d never heard of and it drew me in.

Generally I’m enjoying just playing these older games and have used my PS4 only to play RE4 for the first time just recently and the new Turtles game, oh and I played Odin Sphere on there as well, another harkening back game to experience first hand years after release.

Mine does this. It's really really annoying. I would say it's a major issue.
