Do you recall the date of the NUL meeting? I recall you offered extra money, and I accepted. I really respected what you did on that day and I don't think I have ever acknowledged it before. Thank you Sean, you are a good person.

I found a post that says October 2003?

Is ok! I try to be.

The top gaming influencers seem to be in a clique

They all tend to know each other and use each other as cross promotional tools. It's how you can bump subscribers and get noticed. A lot of it happens across various video personalities on youtube. Some youtube companies even offer such a thing as a service to content creaters.

It's just retro gaming remember, which is a tiny tiny niche compared to the wider gaming scene. So it's not really surprising they hang around together. If you go to retro events you tend to find them all in a gaggle. The exception being Top Hat who was always with his family when I bumped into him.

Hmm, had a bit of a revelation and I’ve unsubscribed from the influencer type YouTube retro gaming channels (Kim Justice, RMC Cave, etc), because honestly, they’re all infected with the same stink. From now on I’m try and hunt out more old-style YouTubers who aren’t begging for money and constantly  trying to sell you a product. Or just spend the time actually playing games instead.

RMC is building a destination for the community. I couldn't care less if he gets rich off youtube or the cave, it's definitely somewhere I want to visit. I don't think his stuff is clickbaity and there's no evidence, to me, of begging. He's vlogging his passion, from what I can see. We'd all, presumably, like to make a living talking about things we're passionate about, right?, and as long as it isn't exploitative, I think that's ok.

I've often enjoyed the KJ stuff and she seems honest about where her research is sourced, which is surely fair enough? The videos are often extremely comprehensive on the respective subject matter too.

Yeah, I don't think RMC deserves being dropped, he seems like a decent dude. To be honest, I wouldn't drop any of them based purely on this; if the annoying content wasn't enough to make you drop them then I don't see why this (fairly grubby) situation is so bad.

I like to see the fact we've got to a point as a society where individuals can make a little living or even a business for themselves by creating content for super-niche industries as a positive. There will always be ugly blips like this but overall I'm happy I've had countless hours of entertainment at very little cost from the current UK retro crew. And yes I just called it an ugly blip but I have to say I've even had entertainment out of this situation thanks to George and his sweary rants, even if I don't like some of the ways he chooses to attack people.

Yeah Neil from RMC is about as far away from this nonsense as you can find I feel. He's carved out a pretty successful corner on YouTube and now real life in his interactive museum and looks to have helped Mark from Mark Fixes Stuff out a lot when he lost his house in a fire last year. Always seems very genuine to me (although I won't be buying a monster joystick sorry).

I prefer the UK crowd on YouTube to their American counterparts, mostly as my memories are of tapes, spectrums, C64s and Amigas, not video game crashes and NES's. Both sides are full of shills tho, I've weeded out a lot of rubbish of late (especially those two mentioned above)

Up until recently, I had no idea that THGM & LD were connected. I used to be subscribed to THGM up until the start of the pandemic. He put a video out that, to me at least, came across as a bit "whiney" and how he "planned for everything" and that was suddenly in tatters. The pandemic struck & he was then moaning about ad revenue dropping, couldn't rent his home ..... etc. While it wasn't quite at the level of the LD "I'm Scared" video it did make me unsubscribe from his channel. I'll have to see if I can find it, assuming it hasn't been deleted. I took that video as "you, the viewer, owes me a living".

Having seen some of LD's videos it just seems like it's all the THGM videos regurgitated.

Just found it, I've put it in the spoiler. I personally feel that seeing both of their videos together really gives a clear picture as to how they see their viewers / subscribers.

Spoiler

Maybe this isn't at all relevant to the current situation, but it adds a bit more fuel to the fire for those who haven't seen this video.

Actually to be honest, I did watch RMC’s latest video (the big donation of vintage computers from a man named Ian) and I changed my mind. I mean, yeah, the channel has sponsors and sometimes sells stuff, which I find offputting, but the guy running it isn’t a shameless grifter and the content is mostly good, if not superb at times.

I didn't really know much about either of them before this.

I think I'd only watched one of lady decades vids as I'm constantly getting them suggested to me, but it just felt like someone reading wikipedia.

Chucking adverts on your vids is fine, but I can instantly think of two other channels where begging was an instant unsubscribe for me before. (not gaming stuff)

How she handled all this was awful, and I'm surprised it hasn't bit them on the arse more with usual internet drama.
