George Cropper has a video out

The idea that a group of people who are nominally all in the same small 'local' industry might want to have a place where they can talk shop outside of holding a conversation in full public view is not the problem here. Like, if they'd actually listened to Neil in those Discord chats, we wouldn't be having this thread.

Absolutely agree

they got caught with their hands on the cookie jar

can you believe the audacity of these people, having a secret elite YouTuber discord - what was its purpose?

to form a closed shop so they keep their part of the grifting pie

What is wrong with them having a discord channel? And why are you using words like "grift"?

You seem way too personally invested in this. What do you want to see? No one making videos about UK retro any more?

i remember when things were not a business, and you made videos for the love of your hobby, and if people liked them, you guy a small kickback from YouTube.

instead now we have PayPal, kofi, go fund me, Amazon wish lists, patreon, only fans, Twitter super crap tweets or whatever they are.

I guess it’s nostalgia for the good old days

anyway, let’s not get off topic

Sure, why not? I’m not personally invested in this, so I wouldn’t mind.

Drops a ridiculous hand grenade, "anyway let's not get off topic".

People deserve to be paid for their work. End of. These are ways they try to get paid. Some do it unscrupulously. They are bad. Those who are just using these avenues to make some money from their creative endeavours are - objectively - not bad people.

And having a 'we're in the same subsection of an industry' private chat room also isn't a fucking admission of guilt. Jesus christ.

So basically you don't think anyone should make a living from it and it should just be a hobby?

No, my ire is just for Richard and Kloe Varty in this instance. I suspect other feel the same.

you could say their actions have tainted peoples views of others in the same sphere of work. Bit of suspicious side-eye.

I guess it’s about ethics in retro games journalism…

I'm more disappointed in Kim than Slope. I can understand George's content being divisive in how he presents in his videos. I can understand too somewhat wanting to align one self due to his colourful language. However, so far everything he's saying are facts and it does seem like the Kim and Slope were looking out for themselves, especially Slope.

I'm confused by that. Kim was one of the first of the "YouTubers" to actually speak out (yes, yes, on Twitter and apparently that doesn't count because of reasons) over a month ago, and Cropper's main complaint is that that she links to the Time Extend article rather than his videos. And while the article could use a short paragraph crediting Cropper a bit more, it links to all the pertinent information and doesn't require sitting in front of somebody going through all the variations for 'fat' across 2+ hours.

I wasn’t aware that some famous YouTubers supported them, and posted tweets (since deleted) .

I’d like to know the exact timeline, was it after the “set on fire” remark and the commitment to trashing the persons reputation ?

as for working with them AFTER all of this, well, we can make our own minds up about that one

Ah yes it does George seems hurt that his videos weren't linked, but again I can understand why Kim would do that. As mentioned his videos could be considered divisive due to his language as others have mentioned. Also while I do agree with George, I wonder too what his endgame is?, does he just wants Tophat and Lady Decade cancelled?.

Exactly. Why would she want to point people towards someone who's been hateful directly towards her in the past? She's every right to ignore Cropper.

This is clearly a bit of a shitty situation that could've been avoided, but there are people in the comments on that last Cropper video comparing the lack of outcry in the UK retro scene to enablers of Jimmy Saville, which might suggest that some have lost all sense of perspective.

Kim was correct in that George wanted 'clout' i.e more views and subscribers since I believe he does feel entitled due to breaking the story. However, if George was more 'diplomatic' in his approach and language then I do feel he get more attention and viewers to his cause. But then it wouldn't be Funkyspectrum would it?.

I don't know. George was one of the people that highlighted the Vega Plus scam.

And he was right about that as well but his presentation is dreadful and not for me. Overlong ranting, weird intonations and stress, insults that don't sit well with me, etc. I can't stand to listen to him no matter how right he is.

Yep he's irritating and probably doing well from this himself. Honestly nobody involved in this is coming out looking good, everyone has to insert themselves into the drama somehow - even Kim Justice who I like a lot and was the only person I had previously heard of who is now connected to this whole thing.

I do think the initial act of using a licensed picture without realising probably happens hundreds of thousands of times a day, I just can't understand why Top cunt gaming and Lady cunt didn't just remove the video or edit it out, pay what is required and move on. Chalk it up as a lesson. If they had done so nobody would be talking about it. I even think the initial letter to them was harsh but the way they acted was terrible and so fucking dumb. It is exactly that internet overreacting to everything BS that turned this into such a big thing and honestly as someone who hadn't heard of any of these people beforehand just confirms I won't be watching any of them in the future. Bunch of whiney spoilt children all playing at being adults while grifting the fuck out of whoever they can.
