From 1993 on, it'd just be lads sitting at computers talking about fluid dynamics.

Yeah, but we'd have had stuff about how they created Jar-Jar Binks (we can see this in the Star Wars Episode I documentary on the DVD but I doubt that zillions of people have watched this) and other CG characters. Davy Jones from Dead Man's Chest! The amazing work they did for Transformers. And returning to Star Wars for the new trilogy. I bet there are loads of stories!

That's true. Corridor Crew have had the odd ILM guy on and they were interesting.

I watched the first episode of this hoping to see some grainy, sun-kissed footage of LA dudes in beards, mucking about and fettling with TIE fighters. I was not disappointed.

Biggest surprise was how cool some of the guys’ childhood home movies were. That was the kind of thing I’d’ve loved access to at that age, but alas, not the means.

This was just what I needed after a tough couple of months. So many documentaries disappoint by skating over the details - those are what I’m here for!

Funny how the early CGI stuff left me cold, but then the Volume stuff from the Mandalorian (and the practical model shot by John Knoll in particular) drew me right back in. As the perfect blend of CG, in-camera projection, and model work it really put the Cherry on this absolutely delicious cake.

This was so great and insightful. So many fascinating little ‘how they did it’ details.

The shadow Lucas casts for himself over the whole enterprise felt a bit unlikely though. Everyone they interview is on record as saying he’s a visionary - but when he pops up at the end of every piece delving into some amazing technological development ILM created to push the boundaries of movie special effects, and changed how movies were made… and goes “yea, that was my idea” doesn’t seem entirely plausible, nor generous towards the hard work and actual genius of those people at ILM who did create those things.

He even does it in the last episode when talking about the Volume. Guy literally walks on set and proclaims it his idea! I don’t know. Maybe it was, and he really did have the idea for it 25 years prior, when none of the technological baby steps needed to get to the final thing had been conceptualised. But then again this is the guy who did Episode One.
