Love Namor so much like so extremely excited. And I have hated pretty much everything Marvel has been shitting out (with the exception of Goot and that episode where he becomes a god).

Spoiler

The enthusiasm in that short Iron Heart section also has me hyped. Very cool.

I wasnt a big fan of the original BP, hes a great charcater & I enjoyed his Civil War & Avengers appearances, but was disapointed in his own movie where they stripped his character of all his confidence, charm & intelligence for some reason. Boseman did a great job, but wasn't given a lot to work with, as all the interesting stuff had been siphoned off onto other characters.

I always think a lot of people liked the original more for what it represnts, rather than what it offers as an an actual movie, but trying to sell something where by far the two best characters & actors from the original have been killed off is a tough ask. Doing it while putting Letitia Wright as the main feature is asking for a world of pain.

That said, I still expect this to make all the money in the world of course. If Thor 4 can make $1.5b then anything is possible.

I'm not a huge fan of the first film, and this I'm struggling to get a handle on. I want to like it, but I can't help thinking there's a significant chance of this being a total mess. There's clearly a lot going on and they've been careful to show very little.

I'm hopeful that (comments on rumour)

Spoiler

we do get to see Doom appear. It's unlikely they'll have Namor end the movie as a villain, and there's clear alleged concept art of Doom in the movie...

Well this reviewed quite well.

The first one did and that was a load of old shite.

And before anyone starts, yes I get the cultural relevance of it and that’s to be applauded, but as a film it was pretty poor.

Agree it's very overrated. But I wouldn't say it's shit.

It's middling MCU fare elevated by a great villain and it's cultural relevance, undermined by some crap CGI, weak action and it's James Bond pastiche not quite working.

I watched the first one again last week as my kids hadn’t seen it (only MCU film that they hadn’t got around to watching).

My view this time was same as when I saw it at cinema - it was pretty good, some good world building and action, but no real desire to watch it again.

I’m really apprehensive about an extra 30 minutes of runtime for the sequel as well as it being a bit more of a pain to schedule it in for this weekend.

Empire have given in 4 stars which probably means 3 1/2, but they say the third act is a mess which doesn’t help concerns about runtime.

The first one is clearly the best solo movie in the MCU. It's actually about something and that something is threaded through the plot, the character motivations, everything. It is a thematically interesting film in the MCU. That's madness. It has a great villain who you can reason with but also see the downsides in and Andy Serkis absolutely chewing through scenery left right and centre having a great time. It looks fucking amazing too. I came out of it thinking it was fine mid tier fare but during a lockdown rewatch it clicked and it's the best. It's certainly the closest Disney have come to making a film that works on its own merits outside of... what... Guardians 1? Yeah the third act ends with a lot of quite poorly directed punching but... well... MCU.

Obviously the franchise has since completely swan dived up its own arse and is now constantly pumping out shite after shite after shite but I trust Coogler to have done it again.

Initial thoughts. It's not as good as the first, the villain is again a little undercooked and it does end in a CGI fight BUT the cast are incredible, they all put in brilliant performances, especially Letitia Wright and Angela Basset. There's a few moments that's are all about T'Chala and Chadwick that are so well handled, you could have heard a pin drop in the cinema.

Feels like this script was probably about 70% as it would be if Chadwick had not sadly passed, it's quote easy to see where they've moved things around to deal with his death.

It's the easily the 2nd best film of Phase 4, or might possibly be some peoples favourite, especially those that didn't get on with Spider-man.

Day off work today, so been to see it this afternoon & I largely enjoyed it.

It was definitely too long & you could easily have shaved half an hour off.  I would suggest ditching the Martin Freeman plotline all together, as it did not bring much to the party.   I am a sucker for a nuanced villain & the bad guys in this while looking rather silly at times are definitely given justifications for acting in the manner they do.

So a solid 7/10 for me in a good way.  If they had kep it a bit leaner it would have been at least an 8.

Angela Bassett was excellent in this. I didn't care much for Riri Williams. I felt like there are a lot of questionable plot points around her.

Spoiler

Honestly, her sub plot and Ross's could have easily been stripped from the film tbh. They didn't really add anything other than more time to its lengths.

Riri in particular, especially when Shuri made her own Iron Man type suits anyway.

With Ross, I thought he could have been worth it if it was going to show the US actually preparing to attack Wakanda and proving Namor’s fears at least partly right.  Riri felt like another walking MacGuffin, would have preferred more time spent on Namor and Talukan which felt a bit thinly drawn

I thought this was ok:

Spoiler

Story wise I thought it was pretty standard, I felt myself sympathising more with Namor that they probably intended, half of the time I thought the Wakandans were the bigger dicks in the situations.

Was definitely too long though, at least half an hour over.
